As many of you are already aware, for the 2007 Soul-Patrol Convention this year we are partnering with the Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival and the Convention will be at Clark Park (map) and The Enterprise Center in Philadelphia from May 24 - May 27th. We are expecting 10,000 - 15,000 (or more) to attend the combined Soul-Patrol Convention & Black Heritage Festival. We have partnered with Black Heritage Festival because our objectives for the Soul-Patrol Convention and the Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival are 100 percent in lockstep with each other.
The entire convention/festival will be FREE with the exception of the Black Music Cabaret, thanks to the generosity of our 2007 sponsors.
THE OBJECTIVE:
To help facilitate the extension of OUR CULTURE into the future...
Click here to view the detailed agenda
We have formed this partnership because both organizations feel that we need to be more proactive helping to facilitate the expansion of authentic Black culture into the future. We feel that our children are currently being hoodwinked by the mass media and we want to provide positive activities to counteract the posion they are being fed about what Black culture is. We think this is a good way to help insure that Black culture actually has a future, that is derived from it's past.
So if you are coming out, please do bring your children. There will be a host of activities such as Creativity Over Crime Workshops, Black Hist. Village & Workshops, Double Dutch Contest, African Storytellers, Native Dance Contest, African Drum Circle, Sidewalk Chalk Festival there beyond the music that specificly are desinged for children. And we want to get to the children "by any means nessecary", via music or other activities.
We think that by directly exposing these younger people to "Great Black Music From The Ancient To The Future", in all of it's forms it will do much more than we ever could here on the internet to extend the music and the culture. And our sponsors concur.
Here is what we have on tap for this 3 day event:
- Black Music Film Festival (@ Enterprise Center former studios of the American Bandstand TV show)
- Black Music Awards Ceremony/Concert (@ Clark Park)
- Black Music Cabaret (@ Enterprise Center former studios of the American Bandstand TV show)
- Black Music/Culture Panel Discussions (@ Clark Park)
- Black Music Trade Show (@ Clark Park)
So far we have over 25 artists confirmed as attending and include some of the biggest names in the history of Black music as well as some of the most important artists on today's progressive/independent music scene, so we will have many unforgettable & one of a kind live performances.
We also will have many authors, film makers, broadcasters and activists participating in various events at the convention.
We are expecting over 15,000 to descend on Philadelphia from around the world to attend the combined Black Heritage Festival/Soul-Patrol Convention this year.
Outdoor events are scheduled for historic Clark Park and indoor events (Cabaret & Film Festival) are scheduled for nearby The Enterprise Center (the former studios of the American Bandstand TV show).

BLACK MUSIC FILM FESTIVAL @ Enterprise Center (46th & Market) Friday 5/25 6pm - 12m (FREE)
These films have been selected because of their educational/entertainment value with respect to our objective of extending our culture into the future. The principles of these films will also be on hand to facilitate discussion about these films before and after their screenings. Once again, the purpose of this is to help open the lines communication between people who do not usually communicate with each other.
“James Brown: The Man, The Music & The Message”

“Dance Party: The Teenarama Story”
(Hosted by Producer Beverley Lindsey-Johnson)
Narrated by Motown recording artist, Martha Reeves of Martha and The Vandellas ("Dancing In The Street"), Dance Party: The Teenarama Story examines the popularity of 1950s and 1960s teen dance television shows. This genre of early television ushered in American popular culture and brought the high school sock hops and dance parties into the living rooms of households nationwide.

“25 Strong: A Film About Basketball - A Film About Life ”
(Hosted by Producer Kevin Harewood)
What you have here is a group of Black men engaged in doing something that Black men aren't supposed to be interested in doing. That is caring enough about the future to spend their "free time" working with younger people, providing them with direction and fun at the same time. This movie takes place in Brooklyn's financially impoverished, heart of gold Bed-Sty neighborhood. An excellent movie especially for those who are cynical about today's younger people. Also features a great "Nu Soul" soundtrack

BLACK MUSIC AWARDS CEREMONY/CONCERT @ Clark Park (43rd & Baltimore) Saturday 5/26 12noon - 6pm (FREE)
1. The artists you see listed are a subset of the list of "Soul-Patrol Best of 2006 Winners" listed on the main page of the Soul-Patrol.com site that I thought would come, based on geography (and other factors). As I get confirmations that from our 2006 winners that list is going to change. We will be physically presenting awards to this group of artists. The full list of those artists can be found at the following link as well:
Soul-Patrol Best of 2006
2. Since we did not have a Soul-Patrol Convention last year, we are also going to invite the "Soul-Patrol Best of 2005" winners to the 2007 Soul-Patrol Convention and physically present all of that group of artists with an award to recognize their accomplishments in 2005. The full list of those artists can be found at the following link:
Soul-Patrol Best of 2005
3. I expect that in addition to the artists listed as "Soul-Patrol Best of 2005 &2006 Winners", I fully expect that many of the artists that have supported the Soul-Patrol Convention in previous years will do so in 2007.

BLACK MUSIC CABARET @ Enterprise Center (46th & Market) Saturday 5/26 9pm - 2am ($40)

The Black Music Cabaret has traditonally been one of the most exciting events at previous Soul-Patrol Conventions. First off all of the artists will be there and it offers a unique chance for you to meet them all "up close & personal" (bring your autograph books). Secondly there is great music from the 50's, 60's, & 70's provided by some of the great DJ's we have here on Soul-Patrol from around the country (Chicago, NYC, Philly, DC, Pittsburgh, etc) who spin your favorite "Ancient Black Music". Thirdly we always have special one of a kind surprise performances from a few of the artists. As you know by now the entire Festival/Convention is free of charge with the exception of this event. For example; all of the sudden you will hear a familiar song, but it won't quite sound exactly like the record, you will look up and see that original artist singing. Plus there will also be great food, trivia contests (with prizes) goodie bags for all attendees and more...
This year the Black Music Cabaret will take place at the Enterprise Center, located at 46th & Market in Philadelphia, which today is a Minority Business Incubator. The Enterprise Center is also a special place in the history of Black music, because it is also the historic location of the American Bandstand Studios during the time the TV show was based in Philadelphia. So we will be partying our azzes off on the very same dance floor where legends like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and many others once stood.
SEE ENTERPRISE CENTER PICTURE BELOW: The Red area on the floor on the right is the outline of the original American Bandstand Dance Floor, while the grey circles numbered "1", "2" & "3", mark the positions of the 3 cameras used to shoot the dancers during the show!!

At the last Soul-Patrol Convention in Willingboro, NJ we sold 400 tickets to the Black Music Cabaret. This year we can only sell 300 tickets for the event due to the limited size of the venue.
- The tickets for this event are currently just $30.00 per person.
- The price will rise to $40.00 per person on April 1 2007
- The price will rise again on May 1 2007 to $50.00.
- You must order your tickets online.
- There are no offline ticket sales and we won't have any for sale at the door, as it's certain to be sold out by the date of the Cabaret
Order your Cabaret tickets online, via PayPal by clicking on the following button. After you complete the transaction, save your transaction email from PayPal and bring it with you to the Black Music Cabaret (that's your ticket):
Buy them at the festival for $60.00
In other words, if you think that you might want to attend the Black Music Cabaret while you are at the 2007 Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival.....GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!!! If you wait, not only will they be more expensive, but you might not even be able to buy one, because we will be sold out!!! This 2 page document is going to evolve into the front and back sides of a physical flyer that we are going to distribute in Philly, New Jersey, Baltimore, Washington DC, NYC, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and perhaps other places.

Soul-Patrol Convention History
(a slide show of pictures from previous Soul-Patrol Conventions)
We are also going to be on the radio in Philly, New Jersey, Baltimore, Washington DC, NYC, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and perhaps other places talking about the 2007 Soul-Patrol Convention and the Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival.
I have been doing some work on the Flyer as well as some other materials. I wanted to let you all know where I am at thus far, since some of you are interested in some of the details. Everything is subject to change except for the dates and the locations:
MEDIA/PROMOTION:
As I stated earlier we will be on the radio in several different cities and we will be distributing flyers in those cities as well. We are also going to schedule several press conferences over the next few months. We will be inviting our artists and others to participate in these press conferences. We will let you know that schedule as it evolves. In addition we will also be using Soul-Patrol's online communications network to communicate our messages and objectives. We are going to make certain that you will hear enough about the Philadelphia Black History Festival & the Soul-Patrol Convention over the next few months, that if you decide NOT to participate, you will be questioning your own sanity.
If you are a member of the media and would like to do a story on the Philadelphia Black History Festival and/or the Soul-Patrol Convention we will certainly use all of our resources (people & information) to help you make that as easy as possible to do
SPONSORSHIP:
The sponsors listed are those who have supported the Philadelphia Black History Festival and/or the Soul-Patrol Convention in the past and who have indicated that they will do so this year as well. As you can see from the flyer, we have an ambitious program of diverse events planned. So we need money to carry it all off. My expectation is that the list of sponsors is going to expand because additional entities are going to want us to let it be known that they are supportive of the objectives Philadelphia Black History Festival & the Soul-Patrol Convention. If you or your organization is interested in sponsorship opportunities, please feel free to contact me.
VENDING:
Several of you have asked me about vending. The answer is that we will have space for vendors in Clark Park. If you are interested in vending please feel free to contact me.
VOLUNTEERS:
Several of you have asked me about volunteering your services. Obviously we need as many volunteers as possible to make this a success. Now is the time to raise your hand and let me know if you are interested. Volenteering could be as simple as agreeing to forward emails about the Philadelphia Black History Festival & the Soul-Patrol Convention or as complex as providing transportation services. Contact me and let me know how you would like to "put some skin in the game".
Obviously there is a whole lot more.
I'm sure that I missed a few things.
But I'll stop for now.
I just wanted to let you know where we were at with all of this right now so that you could do your own planning. If your coming let me know...
