SUBJECT:What is Funk Chat?

I have to say that I am an avid Funk Fan. However, I have never heard of your Funk Chat and I am very interested to find out about others who very much dig true funk. Not Rap but funk. I would very much like to find out more about what you all do. I live in Portland Oregon so I am a west coast funkatier. If you happen to know how I would get a letter to George Clinton I would be very greatful.

The Black History month edition was great. Intresting views and topics, great reading.
I flew Ms. mcCrae up for a show here in Toronto last month and she was great. She kicks it live!
There's an exhaustive bio on her at: www.abc.se:80/~m8877/
Yo Bob...could you possibly add Gwen 'Funky Sensation' McCrae to the
Women
In Funk section of your site? I was surprised that she was'nt included in an otherwise thorough list.

SUBJECT:Re : new FUNK pages for ya.....

Hi bob ! how r u doin ?

It's been months since i came on P-funk... and for a gooooood reason... i was spending my time in Orlando, Florida... and extended my record collection by a hundred vynils that costed me a lot in customs and all taxes when it came to bring there back here in France, on wednesday...
I've just been exploring each centimeter of the new Funk pages and the least i can say is : wooo what a change !!!!

I really appreciate your study of most of the social subjects related to Funk directly or indirectly. And the various comments by members helped to give a global view of the matters and how they were handled by the community...
But i would require a little help from you : i would like to offer my comments, views and ideas about the various subjects discussed on the pages... How can i do that ?
And could anybody be interested in them ?
I'm also gonna try to access to the funk chats but as i don't know the prodigy system, please give me your advice on what i have to do to become a regular member of the funk community.

thank you for your patience and thank you so much for the good job you do with the pages..

SUBJECT:PFunk and Drugs

"...marijuana, hashish, cocaine, speed, LSD, peyote, and mescaline. These drugs attack a person's mind and open it for a demon to enter. We have repeatedly stated that persons throughout history who have entered the occult have taken drugs to increase their levels of occultic consciousness.". This is some religious dribble I came across n the web, but it illustrates the real tragedy of drugs, that of giving our youth di-information that leads to hard drugs.

The following is the reply I made to the above. I think it is relevant here:
Speed, LSD, and synthesized cocaine are intentionally man made for the purpose of addition and ultimately profit. You left out another very critical item in that category of man made drugs, heroin. As you may be aware the drug trade is estimated at producing revenues of over one trillion dollars per year. That money finances the drug trade, prostitution, political corruption, murder, rape, torture, child abuses through criminal manipulation, the list is endless. A trillion dollars is a lot of money in the hands of criminals. Makes me wonder why politicians want to KEEP it illegal.
The other "drugs" you mentioned, marijuana, hashish, peyote, and mescaline are all untouched natural commodities direct from God.
My grandma used to say, "You can't show me nothin' with just one side." And she is right. Even with drugs there is the bad, and there is the good. Let's start telling the truth about which is which, and maybe our kids will have fewer encounters with the "freeway Rick's" and CIA drug market products that make white folks rich and Black folks dead.

SUBJECT:Re: BET=Bourgeoise Educated Toms
I visited your site. I genuinely like it. The music plug-in is great. Your's is only the second website I've visieted with a auto-music.

I think if you changed the postings formate to one with smaller fonts or had a link to another page with the comments it would be easier to read and follow. I love the photos of the hairstyles. Reminds me of sitting in the kithchen to get my hair cornrowed. Maybe that's why I sport my dreads now.
So Robert (Mr. BET) Johnson is still a majority shareholder?? I thought it was Bill Gates from the looks of the website. What's up with that??

I understand Oprah and Steadman are getting involved with BET somehow. I got an email from another sista who thinks we should somehow contact the sponsors and Rap artists ( using the term lightly) directly. I'm not so sure about contacting the rappers because it's not so much that I don't want to see Rap music (I don't) but its that BET's programming needs to be rounded out. If they are going to call themselves Black Entertainment ..., then they should live up to that. I too would like to see some Parliament concerts, some good old Rufus and Chaka, Kool and the Gang back when they were still good, old classic Black movies, Maya Angelou, shows on Black artists, potter, painters, poets, writers, etc. If there were another network I'd shut up, but there isn't. So until Mr. Johnson gets his head out of his *ss, then 1) change the name to Urban Entertainment Network, or better yet broaden and improve the programming!

What would Jesse J. say about all this???

SUBJECT:black rock music

Black rock will never die because there will always be musicians to carry the torch. It is time to create our own record companies that will sell black rock with or without radio/video to promote us.
The majority of rap does not get airplay but it sells. We have to realize that black radio stations are not actually owned by blacks they just play our music and have black d.j.'s . Your local POWER 100 or KISS 90 something will not even play James Brown or Aretha so why are we depending on them to further the cause of Black Rock.
Knowledge about buisness and the music industry is the only way to deal with this problem.

(oups!)I just visited your site and I was quite pleased. The James Brown discography was all there!(first time I see that). Comments:You should improve the sound quality of the cuts you put in the background. It is a good idea you had to have a musical extra. You should have more pictures of James(oh- oh,it`s 6:15,James is supposed to go on superbowl half-time in just a few minutes.Needless to say I`m quite exited about that).Tell me where I could find(on the net) a site that sells funky(69-71)albums/CD`s.It looks like Polydor only had Hot pants from that period.I`m looking for Super bad,it`s a mother, hey america and Motherlode:that`s a new compilation, from 88.I`m a HUGE fan of his.I think a James Brown 101 course should be in high-schools.That would certainly improve today`s funk music level.Oh,remember,I was the one that wrote the reflection on today`s funk?I live in Montréal,Québec (where are you from?)and funk here is like hockey in Mexico...So ruff,so tuff out here!I noticed you had on the corner mentioned in your site.Isn`t that fonky when you get into it?A while ago it put me in a trance.I am a musical hedonist!I can feel it.I`ve got some music ideas of myself.I wrote to George Clinton and proposed to show him my ideas; he didn`t answer. His loss,of course, cause I got soul and I`m superbad.I got my whole concept going.Hint:it`s about one of Plato`s theories. It would be Like JB+KAT G+Zapp.I am also a HUGE Roger Troutman fan.He is electrifying.More bounce to the ounce freaked me so much the first time I heard it I was speechless and my eyes began to cry!I guess I`m a funkateer(ha ha).Don`t think it`s weird;that`s what happens when your soul gets touched by a good sound. After experimenting with uh,acid,I began to hear several rhythms and melodies. That was in 93.Now,in 97,4 years after,I got my entire concepts and a few semanticaly interesting titles. It`s kinda hard to have this "dream" in Canada because it is a zone of unfunkativity(for now anyways).I know I`ll make it: good things happen to those who help themselves(Isaak Hayes on the first Wattstax album-check it out!).Just like you, I like Jimi Hendrix. My favorite album is Axis-Bold as love.Isn`t Little miss lover extrafunky for 1967?He was truly a superior musician. Now,about Zapp.I really think you should have a spot for him on your site because he is one of the most creative and different pplayer(brand new pplayer...).He is,of course, the funkiest of the early 80`s.Do you agree? In my opinion, nothing compares to the Zapp(1980)and the Roger (1981)albums.You don`t think so?Let me see you movin`on the dancefloor, baby!Like I said in my article on the funk discusion thing,he is the 3rd messiah of funk(as far as I`m concerned, the 4th one is open...)afterJB and GC.So please please please reconsider having him on the site, with a few pictures of him singing,it`s quite a sight. It was very nice telling you what`s going on over here in Québec. When you answer, tell me about yourself and what you thought of my message.Music is the message.

SUBJECT:Jimi and the Band of Gypsies (BOG)

Mr. Davis (aka earthjuice);

I just finished reading your Hendrix pages, and all I can say is "Amen"! The fortunate souls who've found Jimi after the Experience, and with The Band of Gypsies are few and far between, it seems. I had an old tape of the Machine Gun II once, but I didn't know where it came from. Then I saw this remastered Band of Gypsies thing, and sure enough, it was recorded on New Year's Eve - that had to be it!

I am positively dumbfounded by Jimi's technique on most every song on that album. I have been playing guitar for about 14 years, and thought I had heard it all, and along comes this twenty-some year old recording with techniques that appear to have been buried with Jimi. Before I got this disk, I had the studio BOG thing. To me, it sounds as if they had laid down some skeleton tracks, but Jimi died before he was done with it. But "Trashman" - I took the time to learn that! And even that still left me unprepared for the live material. Jimi was obviously sober, and dead serious about the creative process again. Same damn tragic thing that happened to Stevie Ray Vaughan, eh?

Well, anyhow, I enjoyed your site, and plan to come back to browse around in some of the other pages. Thanks, and keep it up!

SUBJECT:james brown 45's & listing of ALL People Releases, and comprehensive
list of al

A complete list of all James Brown 45's, in chronological order, would be a great service to all fans. A list of every People Records release with as much information as possible(release dates & label numbers, chronology, personnel, and recording dates) would also be helpful. Also, any other releases by James Brown affiliated artists, such as Anna King. For all LP's a full list of songs on the LP should be included, as well as production & all other credits, and maybe even highest chart position should be included. Foreign releases (especially rereleases and alternate versions). I know that a discography was released in book form (at least that is the rumor), although I have never been able to find out any other information about the contents of the book or if it included the JB's, or other acts.

The JB's (Fred & the JB's, etc.)
Lyn Collins
Marva Whitney
Vicki Anderson (Myra Barnes)
Maceo and the Macks (Maceo and All The King's Men)
Sweet Charles
Hank Ballard (especially with The Dapps)
Anna King
Bobby Byrd
Anything else that I don't know about.

Wow, I love your page on James Brown. I've been a fan of his for a long time, but not as long as you have, it seems! I love the bio and discography, it's the best on the end, hands down! I do have one suggestion, though, how about a page devoted to a review of his albums, so some of us who don't know them all know which ones to buy. If you don't or can't review them, then maybe you could ask on your page for reviews of them from others. Again, thanks for the great page!

I saw JB in concert twice recently, once in the summer of 1994 in Istanbul, Turkey. His show was very jazzy for the first half, but REALLY funky after the intermission. I also saw him this summer, but I was disappointed that it was not as funky as it in 1994. Oh well, he was still great.

SUBJECT:Jimi on the P Funk Site

Just browsed through your very enjoyable Hendrix display. Quite a job - it must have taken some time to put that all together. I noticed the first recording venue for "Band of Gypsys" was incorrect, but the true location was given in the discography.
I agree that Jimi did orient his sound towards funk at the end of his career. However, in songs like "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "Gypsy Eyes" he stayed true to his R & B roots.
My perception of the problem with "Crash Landing" and other Alan Douglas albums lies in his recording. If you listen to the version of "Coming Down Hard On Me Baby" on that album, then compare it to the version on "Loose Ends", they sound very similar. Like identical. It was said that Douglas re-recorded the basic tracks in order to make more money off the albums.
It's a shame that "Rainbow Bridge" has been out of print for such a long time. Also, why was the "Band of Gypsys" reissue just the remastered Capitol album? I'm sure the entire performance would have fit on a single CD. And why not release the entire Woodstock set, in the order it was performed? Maybe now that Al Hendrix has regained control of Jimi's music, we will see more interesting stuff released.

Another thing to mention is the "Stages" box set. The first two recordings are interesting from a historical perspective, but the Atlanta show is worth the price of the entire set. Jimi really put it all together for that performance. I have over forty Hendrix recordings, and that's one of the best.

I had a chance to attend the Band of Gypsys show when the album was recorded, but ended up missing it. Yes, I regret it to this day. I had seen The Experience in May of '69, but didn't find the show exceptional. Of course, if I knew Jimi would be dead in eighteen months, maybe I would have paid more attention!

My copy of "Rainbow Bridge" is in pretty good shape. If you would like a tape of it, let me know and I'll copy it for you. Also, as I mentioned, my Hendrix collection is pretty substantial. If you're missing anything, let me know and I can put it on the back.

It's always nice to find another person who appreciates Hendrix. And you've brought a unique perspective to his life; something we can all use. Keep up the good work.

Straight ahead...
Old White Guy (OWG)

SUBJECT:HI FROM FRANCE, BOB !!

I just discover that i could directly hear the downloaded samples of song thanks to the netscape navigator's sound plugin... so i profited to hear the musical stuff you have on the page, and first... i was quite frustrated not to be able to hear about cameo's songs. But in general i 'm happy because i could hear the funk from the 70's. So i discovered one thing : you're much oriented towards the 70's stuff... that's why, for example, i was surprised not to find a download of an 80's kool & the gang.

however you talked about rap groups like public enemies and i was puzzled !!!!! I dont really appreciate rap and for me public enemy was a group preaching violence, murder, etc... which i can't accept... and my african friends can't too !!! but you mentionned a song in which the lyrics are saying that they would kill the governor of Arizona if authorities refused to create an anniversary day to celebrate Dr KING. This is not violent... It's a natural reaction towards those stupid white americans... I 've learned something important about public enemy and i thank you for it... they're not just people preaching violence, they're people preaching wake-up and recognisation of good-sense...

Before leaving, i would say something : The funk i love is the funk from the 80's and 1983 is the best funk year for me, so i feel only a bit frustrated as your page is more about 70's...
but aniway it's a real pleasure to come here, at home !!!!

Funk bless you, bob, and your friends too !!!!!

First, I just want to say that your page is one of the best Jimi Hendrix pages I have seen--it kicks a whole lotta ass.

With that being said, I have a few questions that you might be able to help me out with:

1) On Jimi Hendrix's Radio One album, it sounds like he is playing back-up to the Beatles on Day Tripper. I was wondering if there were any other recordings featuring both the Beatles and Jimi.
2) I read somewhere that at a concert both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton jammed together on stage. Eric Clapton is one of probably my second favorite guitarist, and I was wondering if there was ever a recording of this event of epic proportions.

Well, thanks for reading this message. I'd appreciate it if you could help me out.

Hi, I wrote to you in June ref: The Meters (and I see my handwriting on the page!)
I am interested in Kool & the Gang. I was initially put off by their dismal output in the 1980s BUT recently heard Jungle Boogie (1974?) and saw your page on them.
Is there early 70's stuff, all that good?. Where should I start listening to get the Real Deal on them?
The same goes for The Fatback Band. Late 70's/80's stuff not good BUT I heard 'Wicky Wacky, Bus Stop and Yum Yum'. All winners.I would appreciate any info you can give me.

Yes indeed, When I saw senoer Carlos he had a Jimi Hendrix shirt on,And there you go.It would be most greatly to be inquiring about, where is the next Hendrix concert but alas we must listen to Carlos as we would listen to Mr.Hendrix, and continue to dig Jimi's music on a regular basis.I saw a Traffic concert in 1978 which had similar vibes flowing like I felt at the Santana concert in Dallas
I would like to get info on Traffic or Santana concerts.

Do you plan "sub-category" on those musicians who have solo albums/careers (such as Jerome Brailey, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins, Maceo, Fred Wesley, the Brides, etc.?)

You certainly have included all the noteworthy funksters in your collection of artists.

I am beginning to appreciate the GAP Band more as time goes by. They were unique and could slang funk at you with the best of them. Moreover, the lead singer was a real singer. Bass lines were kicking and their theme lyrics were a trip.
Another artist I am gaining more appreciation for is Roger Trautman. His Zapp stuff and his original band was made up of some real musicians. His brothers could play and even though he created a stilted drum lines with the computer drums, he never failed to make you party. He collaboration with Bootsy Collins on one track, I forget the name, was a trip. The old Parliament groove with the Zapp styled bottom. Awesome!
Well enough of my rantings. Will speak at you later. Keep the funk alive.

I have just read your message of 10th October about your plans for the P*Funk Web page - great news! I am sure it will be well supported. Are there any plans to provide information about Sam & Dave? There is lots of fairly basic information around but no-one (as far as I know) has done a detailed account of their career and discography.

:I take it you visited out web page ?
Yes, I did about a month ago.

:What did you think of it ?
I was impressed, especially with the reviews section. I was actually doing some research for a newspaper article, and I found the cite to be the most helpful of any resource that I could find (and I work in a major college library).

:How do you come by your FUNK ??
Well back in the day when I used to live in New Orleans, FUNK was all over the place. I remember hearing Parliament, Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, and War all the damn time, not to mention all the FUNKY shit that went down during Mardi Gras each year. Now, I'm full-on into hip hop, so of course I still get a steady supply of modern funk.

SUBJECT:Re: Long time no hear

I paid a quick visit to your website--I've been really busy. I think in a couple of weeks I'll have a chance to take a longer look.
I checked out your Jimi artist page though... I liked it (and the Watchtower wav file now plays when I start my computer!)
I guess it was in my sophomore year (74-75) that I was for the first time exposed to an actual community of African-American students, and your description of a "funkateer" really rang a bell--although I never heard the term--did you make it up or was it in local use where you were in the 70s or was it in general usage and I just missed it? It was cool to hear though because that was the musical taste that ran through this crowd as well as my white friends--Jimi, Sly, P-Funk, jazz artists like Miles & Coltrane, Weather Report, Return to Forever, Steely Dan, Traffic...
So your earlier comments about that fusion were right on...and things did subsequently become more fragmented. I guess it's symptomatic that Hey-Joe seems overly focussed (to me) on the latest boot, derivative electric blues guitarists like SRV (great as he was) etc to the exclusion of the actual cultural and spiritual issues raised by Jimi's work.
Wow, I've run off at the keyboard here. Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking a closer look at your web page when I get a chance.

SUBJECT:Your Hendrix Pages

Hi!
Thanx for a very different perspective on one of my favorite guitarists. I started listening in 7th grade (1975) and was totally obsessed by his music through high school. Although I do consider myself a rocker (as opposed to Funkateer) I have an appreciation for some of the artists you mention. (Isleys, Clinton & co etc...) I think you were right on with your assessment of a side of Hendrix the white press (Rolling Stone etc...) never really picked up on. And I think, had he lived, he would have gone in any one of many directions, but probably would have ended up playing jazz or blues as he got a bit older.

I think one thing that I might be add is that he was just a superior and creative musician. There are tons of people who can play guitar. Stevie Ray V may be able to play more notes and all, but he really doesn't have the pure feeling that Hendrix had. Nor did he have the real creativity. Songwriting is essential, and many people fall down there. But Jimi had a great sense of a song and also heard the finished product in his head long before going into a recording studio. A visionary!
Once again, nice page! And I think I'll check some more of it out another time....

Well if you consider my upbringing and environment during my formative years, I'm surprised that you're surprised! (grin) To start with, I grew up white, middle-class and of British ancestry in Canada (in British Columbia, to be precise), which means that in the 50s & 60s, we wouldn't have been exposed to the same musical terminology as you were. Heck, there were (and still are) even big cultural differences between Western and Eastern Canada, never mind just between us and the USA! So while "funkateer" may have been a familiar term to you, it was unknown here, much the same as "Squid Jigging" or "Sasquatch" or "Pull the goalie" would be something you'd never have heard of.

So what would funkateers have called rock music fans -- rockateers?

I just checked out your website. It's really cool. Oh, I know about the seventies' funk movement. My parents taught me all about that. They had a record collection of the greatest 70's funk bands ever. From Earth, Wind and Fire to Bootsy Collins, they had it all. My dad still has an 8-track in his car and the only thing he listens to is James Brown. Not the old stuff, the songs in made during the late 60's and 70's. My dad would love to talk to you more about the music of the seventies. Thanks for writing and I appreciate everything you wrote.

SUBJECT:Your web sight and Jimi Hendrix

Dear P*Funk Review:
I LOVE YOUR WEB SIGHT!!!

What a great place. Doesn't hurt that you have serious things to say about Jimi Hendrix either.
Jimi Hendrix was the first musician who's music I really fell in love with. I'm still there. I was fascinated by your particular take on him. I think Hendrix is first and foremost a great "American" musician...uniquely so...and I could go into that. In fact, I wrote an essay about Hendrix that I tried to get published last year on the anniversary of his death. There was so much about the then recent death of Jerry Garcia that with the exception of a few "Guitar" magazines, this anniversary was ignored.
Musician magazine, to their credit, did publish an interesting article a few months later about Jimi's death. I bring that up in part because the details of his death have been confusing, and difficult to piece together. My essay was written before the Musician article came out. If you'd like, I'll send it to you.

PS: I don't think Miles ever got over not recording Jimi. From what I read, Miles had nobody but himself to blame. Hendrix was ready, but Miles demanded more money at the last minute. What a shame. What a difference this could have made in the lives of both men. And what I would give today to have that recording that might have been!

SUBJECT:Don't tell me James ain't funky!

Some ignorant funkateers-- not stupid, merely misguided-- have suggested that James Brown didn't have funk in the 1960's. If I'm not mistaken, COLD SWEAT, I CAN"T STAND IT, GIVE IT UP, TURNIT A LOOSE, IT'S A NEW DAY, FUNKY DRUMMER, and MOTHER POPCORN all came out before 1970 and the Bootsy bass injection. I got to defend Soul Brother No. 1 by saying that Bernard Odum's nasty 1967 bass on COLD SWEAT, Jimmy Nolen's deadly rhythm scratches on IT'S A NEW DAY, Fred Wesley's meandering solo on LET A MAN COME IN AND DO THE POPCORN, and MAceo's incendiary funkiness on MOTHER POPCORN all point to one thang: the Godfather was funky long before 1970. Don't get me wrong, the funk got progressively nastier as the 70's went on, and by 1974, James' funk had become, and still is, the true vibe, and George Clinton would have to admit his magic could never have been wrought without Fred Wesley's rank-and-file of hornmen joining the Funk Mob in 1976.

How about complete discographies for the bands - from there you could even add reviews. You could also provide links to other pages. (Mandrill has a site at www.netspace.org/~raw/mandrill/manpages for instance)
The "chart" of bands was great, and I hope that it grows, adding new bands, and eventually jumps for those already listed (I know it can eat up time, and be a serious pain) Also the music clips are a great idea (too bad I still don't have a sound card :(

Hi, I really enjoyed your web page. It was really put together well. I can't wait to see the rest after the construction. I am also delighted to read that you saw the movie "Wattstax". I last saw that movie during its first run when I was 12 years old. Now that I'm 37, I've had the privelidge to see Wattstax again during a series of musical movies held at a local museum here in Baltimore. I was sadden to hear that the print the museum projected on the screen that night is the only print in it's existence. Luckily the film didn't break during the show. If possible, can you suggest or direct me to someone who can maybe start a committe to preserve the movie Wattstax for future generations to view and enjoy the 70's style of music and fashions. It would be a shame to lose a piece of historic American culture. Sorry, I didn't mean to be so long winded. Thanks for listening! :)

Just saw your Top 10's: forgive me if I read them wrong but I didn't see seminal New Orleans funksters THE METERS! They wrote the book, wear the T- shirt and funked out before any of the others - AND THEN SOME!
Formed in 66/67? they were a back up band for New Orleans finest and also made several seminal classics of their own! Their style is off the wall funk, very loose yet perfectly tight (if you know what I mean). Some of their stuff did border on Easy Listening however, their only downfall! Check out Chicken Strut - it'll all make sense!

What about Nasau (I think that's their name) and the Blackbyrds? Tom Scott - the guy who did the Starsky & Hutch theme? You're now bringing my tastebuds back to life. I'm going to dust down a few old 45's and hit the dancefloor!
