DATE: Sunday, 04-Jan-98 11:18 PM SUBJECT: Best Site Ever ! The best site ever - I LOVE the loops that start off when you get to a page. I grew up on this music - where? INDIA! Not-so-well-off kids in India listened to this stuff because I suppose something in us responds to the protest element of this music, the defiant, pounding rhythm that has so much SOUL, that makes such pointed criticisms so groove-ably!

I feel hurt when people imply that I, being Indian do not really have a right to FEEL for this music. Yes, I too get very put off when people claim they like this music only because it's 'cool' to do so.
But - its a great thing when music can cut across boundaries to resound with one's experience, when one can READ in the music of a people that they have done such wonderful, creative things to survive experiences far worse than one's own, but similar.

Suggestion - have some way for us to find out who the artists are on the loops that start off each page.

Hi,
I was looking at web address "http://pages.prodigy.com/funk/billy.htm" I noticed the guitar players last name is the same as mine and as far as I know any Torpea's are related . I don't recall a John at any of the
family reunions. Is John Torpea the correct spelling of his last name.
If it is, do you know a way to get in contact with him or get this message to him? If so please ask him to email me at "dan@stlnet.com" We may be related.
Any information you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks,

SUBJECT: Brian Augar

I've enjoyed his music since the sixties----Brian Augar and Trinity with Julie Driscol---who later became Julie Tippets (Kieth Tippets etc.). Brian did a reunion album with Julie called Encore. do you know how I could get a copy or possible CD? My album is damaged etc. Encore was released in 1978. To the best of my knowledge Brian is living in the L.A. area and has played numerous dates out here---Do you have a schedule of gigs etc? I know he plays with a lot of people.

Lastly, what knocks me out about Brian Augar, is that----you know it when he plays---doesn't sound like anyone yet his music can move the most sedentary of the species........

SUBJECT: Mandrill info correction & update.

JUST THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO HEAR A FEW CORRECTED FACTS FROM SOMEONE IN THE KNOW...

TWO MEMBERS OF THE ORIGINAL MANDRILL BAND WERE CHARLIE PADRO (DRUMMER) AND HUGH BUNDIE CENAC (BASS). THESE TWO MUSICIANS WERE PART OF THE INITIAL BAND'S INCEPTION (1968 THRU 1972), AND HELPED TO WRITE AND ARRANGE THE SELECTIONS ON THE FIRST ALBUM TITLED "MANDRILL". THEY WERE ALSO THE RECORDING DRUMMER & BASSIST ON THAT FIRST ALBUM, RECORDED AT ELECTRUC-LADY STUDIOS IN NEW YORK. WHY YOU FAIL TO LIST THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN MANDRILL'S HISTORY IS A MYSTERY.

CHARLIE PADRO NOW RESIDES IN NEW YORK. HE NO LONGER PLAYS DRUMS, BUT RATHER INVOLVES HIMSELF IN VIDEO MULTI-MEDIA PRODUCTION.

HUGH BUNDIE CENAC LIVES IN SAN FRANCISCO. HE IS VERY ACTIVE AS A BASSIST, PLAYING IN MANY LATIN JAZZ BANDS AND CURRENTLY HEADS HIS OWN JAZZ TRIO CALLED "JAZZMANIAN DEVILS".

FOR ADDITIONAL INFO OR TO CONTACT BUNDIE, E-MAIL HCENAC@SLIP.NET

SUBJECT: SLOW JAMS

MY FAVORITE IS "STAY IN MY CORNER," BY THE DELLS.

I noticed this tune was not mentioned. I am a west coast-Los Angeles funkateer, "well alright" hit me. We were really, really into the "mother- ship connection". Parties consisted of fast funk and slow jams. I do think these "negroes" out here had to like you to slow-dance with you. Because have the time I didn't know the guys.

I would not allow the "dude" to drop his hands below my waist. I didn't like the grind either, and would not allow it. so hubbie you can see this, LOL. I was a fast, fast dancer, and had duration , !!!!!!!!!!!!

My afro could bop up and down. LOL

I could go on and on, about my funk days. But here is a tell all.

Inquire with you site-visitors on how many attended, a San Diego State Party in the early 70's. San Diego State is the known party-school. Now there was some funk !!!!

Bob.

Nice Prince review. Being a Minneapolis native, and formerly in the Professional audio business there, i had the opportunity to work with him many times. Actually, he was one of my better customers. I designed, wired and installed the 24 track studio package that he used for recording the bulk of the Purple Rain album and movie soundtrack. The package I installed went into his rehersal studio and I trained him on the system operation. Also, if you have a copy of the movie on tape, I provided much of the sound equipment that was seen throughout. Look closely and you may be able to notice that most of the mic cords that he and his band are using are purple. That was something that I fixed him up with on a whim, he liked the idea and went with it. The mics attached to the cords also were from me (Sennheiser 441's if I recall correctly). In one scene in his basement he is standing at the bottom of the stairs and there is a bright "HH" logo behind him on a guitar amp. HH was a british guitar amp manufacturer that was trying to make inroads in the US at the time of the movie. They never made it here, but he liked the look of the light so he rented it for the scene.

Enjoy the music.

Earthjuice and others who may be seeing this,

Maybe it's more prudent for me to reply anonymously since I put together the Mandrill anthology... but I love this bad band so much that I had to write as me just to say THANK YOU for having a page on this great group. I'm not trying to sell CDs -- it's all 'bout love. Anyone is welcome to comment on the disc but I strive to avoid debates about favorite tracks. It was difficult to choose and some cuts were unfortunately not available. Also, please let folks know, that GARY N. MAYO, the mastering engineer who put his heart and soul into the project, and who was an absolutely integral part of creating not only a slammin' sound but a positive vibe around it, passed away this past April -- on the eve of going to meet Mandrill for the first time. He was a bad brother and not so incidentally one of the few Afr.-Amer. mastering engineers out there. He is MISSED. (Check out the sound on all the Kool & The Gang reissues...) [BTW, the Wilson Bros. have been doing shows. Do not miss any of them. And Dr. Ric is indeed a cardiologist in L.A.]

I found your site just tripping around! Where would U rate O(+, of all time? or of this current crop...He does not get the full credit he's earned! I rank him with Santana as the best! Jimi, was a trip, a bad brother ..well ahead of his time, but one wonders with out the drugs could he find those cutting edge sounds he was getting? And I found, just his over all sound, not as polished! But he was great! But look at Santana,he did his share of drugs too! O(+>, is much better then anyone's really heard ..He just does what he wants! But with a very clean mind he is a monster, beyond what we know! People I feel now, music artist, critics alike are getting it in there head, just how great, and brilliant of a all around genius of a artist this man truly is! Hey, at 39 James Brown, could not move like O(+>,does right now! And that speaks 4 it self! And Rick James....that waste of space! The nerve of talking trash about O(+> At his best...Ricks talant couldn't out do O(+ in his sleep! And the man does not sleep alot! Hey I just had 2 let that out...Peace, Emila

SUBJECT: I agree that for Kool and the Gang,

their later stage music was a betrayal to the funk - I saw some greatest hits tape with all of them congregated around a private jet, looking all 80's corporate - it was a pretty heinous site. I will say this - I started breaking out my copy of the 'Good Times' album back from 1972 ( when they were pure unadulterated funk!) - I think every track on that album is excellent. My breaking it out was sparked from a friend of mind asking me to listen to a song off the first cypress hill album which I think is called "light another" - I was like "fool! that's a sample of good times!"

North East South and West is pretty smooth, 'I remember John Coltrane' is a tender tribute, Country Junky is a great jam, Father Father reminds me of wholly holy from What's Going On, and Rated X should have been used during the love scene in Dolemite. It's a great album I think, and quite impressive from guys
all of 21 or 22 years of age at that point. Any opinions from anyone about this album?

SUBJECT: Soul, Funk and Black Pride

Soul music and the Civil Rights movement demonstrated that black people could succeed in this society. Funk and Black Power showed us that we could change this society, but that it ain't going to be easy. I don't think that we can bring about the change we need through the corrupt society we are a part of. We have to forge a new way of living, built on respect and community, not materialism and individualism.
Of course the recording industry wont go for that because they know what sells today, sensationalism. How can we fight the power when we are fighting ourselves? Ho can we hope for a better society when women are constantly degraded and objectified? There are ways, if all Amerika listens to is money, consume consciously. There are musical options out there, Spearhead for instance. It might be hard to find, but make demands. It's a difficult time, but the funk can pull us through.

Man I just heard about this site from AFROAM_L. I'm sitting here now with my eyes so wet I can barely see the keyboard listeninng to on e of the most sensuous songs from the late 60's "So I can Love you". I was in Biloxi, Ms at Keesler AFB when that came out. I remember many a slow dance with those fine southern sista's off of this song. My rod would be standing out like "We the people", "Gangbusters".

There was another beautiful slow song during that time by a group called the "Soul children" the song was titled "The sweeter he is" It was awesome as well. Lawdy Lawdy Lawdy, if I could just turn back the hands of time.

BTW, where is Al Green? Mr soulful himself Is he here and i just overlooked him?

Why don't you have them put WWRL on the web in the Real Audio Streaming format like other station are doing. Then lovers of soul music that are living out here in places like "Pflugerville, Texas" can have access to the real thing.
Also, being out here can inspire one to write songs that one cannot hear anywhere else. Do you have any contacts or leads that can be shared? I have some songs that are already copyrighted and waiting for Gerald Alston and the Manhattans, but I cannot reach them.

So much money was given to the Latino chilren? Why not us also?

SUBJECT: Fwd: Re: Sell out or Souled out ?

Hello Bob,
I am very glad you wrote this story about Kool & The Gang because the fans need to know what happened. There are some other facts surrounding why Kool sold out to pop music. Kool & the Gang did not make any money from those 70's funk hits. De-lite records did not pay their artists any royalties or very little royalties before going out of buisness.
De-Lite was no different than Westbound Records where acts like Funkadelic & The Ohio Players were ripped off from bogus contracts.
If you think Kool & the Gang were big stars then why did they have to play endless chitlin circuit concerts.
The only way Kool could make a living was to tour endlessly. During the Grammy awards of 1979 De-lite could not even afford to send Kool & the Gang for their own nomination.
Kool had been in the buisness long enough to realize that the only way for the band to be profitable was to come up with a pop formula that could carry them into the 80's.
You could ask any of the funk vetrans why they're not millionaires they will tell you say they never made a penny off those hits.
Many of the Funkadelics are almost broke and have nothing to show for years of hit records.
Eddie Hazel died broke and his mother in her 70's has to work in a dry cleaners to make ends meet.
Ray Davis drives a school bus to make a living .
I would rather see Kool & J.T. be rich than to be broke from the white man cheating them out of millions of dollars.
When Kool & J.T. have to take their kids to the doctor saying i was a star in the 70's will not get it.

SUBJECT: sellout?

All I want to say is that I too was and still to some degree a kool and the gang fan. I was as disappointed as anyone else when ladies night came out. I thought that they were just going to do one change of pace album ,then come back with the stuff that made them what they were, baaaaaaaaaaaaaddd. But people have to remember that sometimes there are situations that go on in the record business, that forces people to make choices that maybe unpopular to the fans but if you are not really making money (as they were not with Delite Records) than people submit to conformity. Also a lot of people may not know it, but the same thing that happened to Byrd in the movie The Five Heartbeats.(when Big Red had him hanging from the window) actually happened to Robert "Kool" Bell. And I have close associates to verify this.So this is something else to consider.

SUBJECT: Sam & Dave and the other end of the dial

We were very fortunate here in Memphis for several reasons. Not only did we have a great station at the far end of the dial WDIA, our pop stations played a lot of soul, especially homegrown. Otherwise white kids like me might never have gotten exposure to this great music. I never lacked for exposure or appreciation of this great stuff. A lot of credit goes to WHBQ and WMPS for bucking the national trends. Of course they had a tradition of doing this back to the late forties with Dewey Phillips. He believed if music was good it should be on the radio no matter what format or who made it. Great pages!

SUBJECT: Sell out or Souled out ?

I do not blame Kool & The Gang for the sell out or being "souled out".
It was time for the brothas to cash in on their investment and get what's theirs.
There is a big difference between livin in da hood compared to havin bank and living in a five bedroom home with a recording studio("can you get to that").
Those pop songs were god awful shitty; but the funk was dead and why should Kool & J.T. be broke ass niggas playin Jungle Boogie funk when Disco ruled the airwaves and record sales.
Kool & The Gang is in a buisness where either you make the hits or you're a has been; The issue is not about selling out when the man is ripping you off by not paying royalties, stealing the publishing of your songs etc.......
The Gang did what civil rights fought for; The opportunity to make the white man's dollars.
I think we ought to remember the R&B artists who never got paid and died broke before we accuse the brothas of being a sell out for the man.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading you thoughts on soul vs. funk. I particularly was amused by the analogies throughout the article. (Nice touch) I tend to agree that there was a transformation or emergence of funk that took place in the late 60's and early 70's.

SUBJECT: Classic Soul Link

I love the US Graphic. I wasn't aware of all the regions of Soul. Were they based on the locations of the major recording studios? To be honest, I could not tell you the difference between Memphis and South just by listening.
I have not had a chance to explore many links yet. You all seem to have put a lot into your background graphics for each page. This is good and bad. I have always found the Funk, and now The Soul pages take a while to load,(perhaps its my impatience). I have a 28.8 speed modem. However, this can be helpful. While shopping for cds, I don't always remember the name of the recording, but I can usually recognize the picture on the jacket.
I know it is difficult to categorize the the Soul vs Funk as so much seems to be mingled, but I'm happy for your efforts.

Explore the link between the emergence of the style of James Brown, with particular emphasis on the his development in the late 40's and early 50's, with the emergence of the funk movement. With such a grounding, one would find some interesting linkages between these two "phenomena" and the musical styling roughly falling under the rubric of "funk."
You may also want to explore the changing musical tastes in found at the turn of the century.

SUBJECT: JAMES BROWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi !

I'm a BIG BIG BIG fan of James Brown and of all his empire...

The other day I was Downtown and saw a store that sold only vinyl's. So I went inside the store to see what they had with the J.B.'s.

* 1963 Prisoner of Love
* 1965 Papa's Got A Brand New Bag
* 1966 I Got You (I Feel Good)
* 1966 JB Plays JB Today & Yesterday
* 1966 JB Plays New Breed (The Boo-Ga-Loo)
* 1967 Raw Soul
* 1968 I Got The Feelin'
* 1970 Soul On Top
* 1970 Sex Machine (Double Album)
* 1971 Revolution of the Mind (Live at the Apollo) Volume 3
* 1973 Slaughter's Big Rip-off (Soundtrack)
* 1976 Hot
* 1976 Bodyheat
* 1977 Mutha's Nature
* 1978 Jam 1980's
* 1978 The Fabulous James Brown (Double Album)
* 1979 The Original Disco Man
* 1980 Hot On The One (Double Album)
* 1980 Soul Syndrome
* 1981 Nonstop!
* 1984 Ain't That A Groove - The JB Story 1966-69

All of theses album cost no more than 20$/each!
Is there any possibility of seeing these records re-mastered to CD's or should I jump on the occasion as soon as i see one of these vinyl records. Also I would like to know the financial value of these records if at all possible.

For the James Brown empire I found these---

* WESLEY, FRED & HORNY HORN A BLOW FOR ME A TOOT FOR ATLANTIC SD 18214 VG+/VG++ 1977
* WESLEY, FRED & NEW JB'S BREAKIN' BREAD PEOPLE-6604 VG++/VG++ 1974
* J.B.'S, THE DOING IT TO DEATH IMPORT POLYDOR 2391087 GERM VG++/VG++ 1973
* J.B.'S, THE FOOD FOR TOUGHT POLYDOR 1972
* PARKER, MACEO US PROMO PEOPLE-6601 VG++/NM 1974
* MACEO & ALL THE KINGS MEN FUNKY MUSIC MACHINE EXCELLO EX-8055 VG++/NM 1972

And all of the above were still wrapped !!!
And for no more than 20$/each !!!

That's all

Hello Bob:

I wrote you about a month ago asking for Internet addresses where I could find lyrics of EW&F ´s songs. Do you remember?
I was going to see them live, and you asked me to answer you about it.
Well, I am a really big fan of them, so my opinion is not absolutely impartial. Nevertheless, the concert was weak: too many "solos" (great ones, but too many for an all-time group), only 5 or 6 all-time songs, and I really missed a lot of them.
The concert wasn´t long neither. About 75 minutes. We all expected more.
If you have any experience in EW&F live concerts, I would like to hear your opinion. I use Netscape Communicator, so I can hear voice-mail.

Thank-you and good-bye.

Bob,
Does anyone call you "Robert"? Besides your grandmother, of course.
Came across a couple items, potentially of interest.

Got a catalog from Rhino records. I don't know if you're familiar with them, but they started as kind of a novelty label, then began to put together some serious cross-licensing packages. Nowadays they've got a lot of neat stuff. Among them "Beg, Scream & Shout: The Big Ol' Box of '60s Soul" which is a six-CD set. They also offer the old "Atlantic Rhythm and Blues 1947-1974" series, among many others. If you haven't checked them out, they're at www.rhino.com. I briefly went there, but only did a couple searches to test. They do allow searches by pre-defined category, so that's a plus. Or get a flyer from 1 800 432 0020. Could be mildly interesting.

SUBJECT: Once Again

Hi Bob. Thanks for responding to my email.
I've finally checked out P-Funk Review again and I must say y'all sho nuff take your blacknuss seriously. As a brotha from the Caribbean transplanted to Toronto, Canada, my experience with the funk is slightly different than most of your compatriots. I distinctly remember the summer of 78, a normal summer in good ol' T.O., listening to 1050 CHUM, one of the rock & roll heavy weights, and my uncle coming over to our house, hearing this and shouting, "What the heck are you listening to? Don't you listen to BLK
(WBLK broadcasting out of Buffalo NY on the FM dial). What can I say, it was like my life just started.
As a matter of fact, I got in so much trouble with my parents because the host of the midnight - six am show, Laura "My Dream" Dean played the absolute latest and greatest tunes, no Quiet Storm format here, that I would stay up till they went to sleep, creep downstairs, put on the headphones, and listen all night often falling asleep in the glow of the Marantz receiver. Of course, my Mom or Dad would catch me there during the night or early in the morn and I would catch hell, but at least I heard something fresh. Two first listens that stand out are Get It Up by The Time and I Just Want To Be by Cameo.
I finally caught up to the culture of the funk in 1990 when I started working at a record store, and if you've ever been to T.O. I'm sure you've checked it out; Sam The Record Man on Yonge St. I was drawn to work there because I needed a specific music experience, even though I didn't know what it was at the time.
As I take a breath Bob, I am noticing just how much I want to say. Your site has evoked many emotions. I hope I'm not going overboard.
While at sam's, my appetite for knowledge about black music before 1978 was voracious. I was angry that I couldn't live the funk, that the only real radio I was exposed to was rock, back in the day that rock stuff was curiously funky. By the time I left Sam's in 1992, I had 'realized my potential', started a music/telecommunications related business. My motto was Bernard Wright's Music Is The Key, from a brilliant debut album I might add.
Whew! An abridged life story. Fast forward to now and your interweaving of culture with music is fabulous and unavoidable. I'm also impressed that you've been of the times, i.e., I have often criticized African Americans for not embracing the funk such as the artists featured in the "Alternative R&B" piece. And even then, the bridge builders, the natural extensions from past funk to present funk, such as Loose Ends, Soul II Soul and other English acts, get no props.
I'm not sure where to go from here Bob, so I'll check out for now. You have however awakened the net communicator within and I think I'm ready for some chatting. Any information, advice you can provide in this area would be greatly appreciated.
At this time, I'd like to suggest the group One Way featuring Al Hudson and for that matter Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly for some kind of acknowledgment on the home page.
Peace, kurt@pumpumc.com

SUBJECT: Re: http://pages.prodigy.com/funk/ Update

I just read much of your website. I first heard the term alternative in black music on BET Teen Summit when it aired yesterday 6/15. I didn't like it one bit. I consider alternative music junk white music. I hear the stuff only when I watch the American Music Awards and the Grammys.
I was offended when the young male host on Teen Summit had the nerve to call it alternative music. I said to myself "What's this?"

Rock n'Roll is an old colloqial term that our elder blacks used in reference to sex. And, as you know, Allan Freed took the term and labeled the new teen music sensation Rock n Roll.

Alternative music does not sound permanent. Erykah, Maxwell, TTT and the others who are going back to classic soul and rnb will be around a long time to come, because my generation (the over 40 crowd) love them and go crazy over them. You know Maxwell has sold out one of his concerts at Madison Square Garden that his promoters has set up another performance. I knew Maxwell from the very beginning would have sell-out performances because that young man can sing. He don't need no extras in the studio. This man can sing his butt off in live performances. Thank you for your webpage.
Eleanor
