Thanks. I really love the kind of music that you've taken so much trouble to highlight. It's great to see someone like Gil Scott-Heron being given his due - he's written some brilliant songs which cut right to the heart of the matter.
My only suggestions would be to include a bit more about Curtis Mayfield and albums that he made like `There's No Place Like America Today', `Curtis' and `Roots' and so on. Songs like Hard Times and Move On Up captured a moment but also still have a hell of a lot of resonance. Also, I've found that music by people like Roberta Flack and Esther Phillips from around this period remains underated. What do you think?
Thanks again. Greg

SUBJECT: The Greatness of Gil Scott-Heron
I sincerely agree that he is an incredible social commentator. But let's not forget his love for jazz (Lady Day and John Coltrane / Is it Jazz) and the eloquent ways he expresses the pain of the human condition (Home is Where the Hatred Is/ Pieces of a Man/ The Prisoner). Gil Scott-Heron words speaks to one's heart and soul along with one's conscience.
By the way, I would appreciate any information on his present where abouts. I heard rumors that he disappears a few years ago right before his Japanese tour. Any information will be appreciated.

I discovered Gil only a year ago, but I like his music and respect him so much, that I named my fantasy football team "Whitey on the Moon." He was way ahead of his time; nothing has changed for the black man.

Rickey Vincent's book was great. The best book I have read in a long time. (Nowadays, I hardly ever read books, but I could'nt put this one down). Do you know how I could contact him?
I am a definite funkateer.
I just wish I could find some of these albums - some are real hard to find I can't find Gil Scott-Heron anywhere in Baltimore. I keep looking for all the Stax albums (especially the albums & movie -Wattstax) and they are nearly impossible to find.
"Funk is that low-down dirty dog feeling that pops up when a baad Funk jam gets to the heated part, and you forget about that contrived dance you were trying, and you get off your rump and jam. The funk is a rush that comes all over your body. Funk is what you say when nothing else will do. The Funk is a deliberate rejection of formality, pretense, and self-repression" -- Rickey Vincent

SUBJECT: Gil Scott-Heron lyrics
Hello,
I read your web page on Gil Scott-Heron. I've known of him for years, though only had "Bridges", an album that had a great impact on me at the time. I've since lost the LP in all my moves, and need to get the lyrics to one song, "All of the Places We've Been", or something like that. Do you have a lyric sheet, or a web site I can locate it?
Thanks.

He's a legend! You want to talk funk ... "The Bottle" and "Revolution Will Not Be Televisied" are just two of his amazing talent to go from funk to jazz and back again. Gil and Brian Jackson released some great material in the 70's. After Brian left, Gil still had great stuff, but I think the "Gil/Brian" collective was most likly his apex.

SUBJECT: Re: Hello...
Hello again. I have had an opportunity to look through your web page further, and I think every section of it has its own palpable atmosphere. As soon as someone logs on they wade through thick vibe (is that Buckshot Lefonque?).
I wrote about Marvin Gaye out of innermost necessity - I felt like there was something that had to be said that someone somewhere should be hearing. In the words of Sylvester Stewart, I was letting the plastic get me down - at this instant I somehow rediscovered my What's Going On vinyl. I just started listening to it, and it was hard to explain but it was like an exquisite surrender - the record definately reoriented me spiritually. I suspect it was something I needed, and since then I re-immersed myself with my soul records and the more savvy of my funk-driven records. I found your webpage by accident actually (to answer your question), and feel that we are on the same wavelength musically (I really dig most of the artists you have featured) and thought you would appreciate my input.
To be honest, I sometimes become frustrated with some of the music nowadays, and believe that at times it suffers from an identity crisis. But I think there are definate gems in the rough like Erykah Badu all silky and sweet. I see her in any Billie Holiday or Sarah Vaughn album that I could break out, and notice that even she is featured on your page.
I also applaud your decision to feature Gil's "Home is where the Hatred is" in the Gil Scott-Heron section. That is arguably one of my favorite songs from him, and it has remarkable teleportational power. When I listen to that I always find myself in some scene not unlike Frankford Terminal here in Philadelphia twenty-five years ago - the same feeling I get when I listen to the Last Poets rap about New York in "New York, New York" - its like an impressionist painting done all with shades of purple and ebony, with a '65 black imperial driving by, men of character huddled by a can-fire, and the plastic, with vapor-locked expressions walking around, to borrow a last poets expression, with "clairol on the brain". I love the first three Funkadelic albums (Eddie Hazel is a rare talent), and even noticed you have a Mandrill section.
In short, I think your page is excellent, and every time I log on I find something new ( I think I'm in love with Minnie Riperton now..heh heh)

Gil did all the classics, Johannesburg, the Bottle, winter in america. The band was really tight and played two sets totaling about two hours. If you get the chance try to catch them..... You won't be disappointed.

I noticed your Marvin Gaye section is under construction. I encourage you to complete that particular section of your page. I would like to point out that I enjoy several of the other musical groups you have featured here, especially Gil Scott-Heron, and find your commentary accurate and entertaining.
I was listening to 'wholly holy' from 'what's going on' the other day. I must say that that is one of the most gentle and deep songs I have ever heard. With some of the interviews I have seen of Marvin, it doesn't surprise me that such a song would come from him. Sometimes, his expression reveals a man who is so sensitive that it is as if he went through life reaching out with the tips of his fingers severed and the nerves exposed. I noticed he couldn't even discuss certain topics going on around him without being driven to tears. To think someone, let alone one's own father, would murder someone such as this really frustrates me - meanwhile the flotsam and jetsam of this world live into their 90s.

gil is one of our greatest artists and it was a major tragedy that for so many years he did not record. I am saddened to read of his drug problems and concerts that he has had to cancel or not show up up to. I pray for him and have little hope for a box set since arista never did right by him at all.

I dislike that label "alternative" r&b or what you call it put on our music. Why is it alternative? Is it because it's not soulful enough to be called soul music. It's bad enough white folks tagged our music r&b.I don't even know if we tagged our music soul music. Alternative to me sounds like that white shit played on white music stations. To me Maxwell,Erykah Badu and the rest who don't fit into the hiphop mode are
called "alternative". That's got to be stopped.
