This is a new compilation of music by James Brown and The JB's, which was originally
recorded between April 25th, 1970 and January 26th, 1971. The album includes full length
versions of "Sex Machine", "Super Bad", "Soul Power", "Talkin' Loud and Sayin'
Nothing" and "There Was A Time (I Got To Move)". If you love long versions of James
Brown's funk classics, this CD is for you ! (One of my favorites is the 19 minute version of
"Escape-ism" on the "Hot Pants" album!) "Super Bad" contains a free form sax solo
which is badd! "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose"starts with a funky guitar solo thats sounds
like the one later used on the beginning of "Rock Creek Park" by The Blackbyrds.
"Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing" is loose as James is heard telling the engineer to keep
the tape rolling as they improvise a rap (similar to the rap on the extended
"Escape-ism"). My only complaint is the extended version "Sex Machine". It was
recorded three months after the original and is not as energetic. It also has a slightly
different mix and makes it seem a little sedate. Despite this minor flaw, this compilation is
the best of James Brown's music I've seen in a long time!
