SYSTEM Greeter:"Neftali" has entered the room
Welcome to an URBAN SOUNDS ****SPECIAL EVENT**** with our special guest MANDRILL DRUMMER NEFTALI SANTIAGO.
nightrain:How was Mandrill influenced by Rock music?
Neftali: the vairous backround of the band members, all came together in a melting pot of musical taste
zuzuu: I saw Tony Williams,.what do you think of his style? did Tony Williams influence you?
nightrain:Mandrill was a lot like NYC itself...."melting pot"
Neftali: no disrespect but, not at all. Jazz, isnt my influence, laying down a groove and digging into the beat is
nightrain:cool ....Where does that "groove" come from?
Neftali: the heart
prfkangel2u: Who/what was the inspiration for Fencewalk
Neftali: the Wilson Bros. it is about when an individual has a purpose, sets a goal, then looses focus.
FunkyMoon1: How was the name Mandrill chosen?
Neftali: When the Wilson bros, opened their muscial talent to other musicians, the name Wilson Bros, was no longer appropriate. Since the Primate Mandrill is a family based monkey....
Neftali: The simiularities were so strong that we adopted their image as our logo
TruPlaya: When "Mandrill" became "Michael Masser and Mandrill" in 1977, was that an Arista label mandate? How did you personally feel about the name change?
Neftali: There was no name change
Neftali: the producer decided that he wanted to play artist after writing a song. That is why it reads Masser/Mandrill
TruPlaya: Mandrill members were legendary as multi instrumentalists. Which did you most enjoy playing besides drums?
Neftali: Dabbled in key boards is fun.
nightrain:Can you give us a few thoughts you have regarding the influence of Jimi Hendrix on Mandrill?
Neftali: Buddy Miles was my biggest musical influence...
Neftali: meeting and becoming friends with him was a highlight in my life...
Neftali: He JImi Hendrix, and Billy Cox...
nightrain:HELL MAN....THAT'S 2/3 OF "the Band of Gypsy's"
Neftali: form the first funk/rock band ever... Band of Gypsy's
prfkangel2u: Has anyone asked about how he feels about the interest people have in Mandrill...in the last couple of years ?,,,,how does he/they feel about it?
Neftali: it's great that a new generation is tuned on to the Mandrill experience
Neftali: Where are the funk/rock bands of today? they seem to have disappeared.
nightrain:Why have they disappeared?
Neftali:as an art form, i think it's necessary for urban people to express themselves through music.
nightrain:What happened to the GREATEST music in history.......music that was good for the *head* (BOTH HEADS????)
Neftali: Because of sequencers and studio produced music.
Neftali: It's a dying culture, unfortunately.
nightrain:Did it die as a result of a "conspiracy"? ....or did it "kill itself"?
Neftali: Electronic music killed it
nightrain:Why do u say that the culture is "dying"? Some people here are activly involved in trying to get younger people to understand what that ...*GROOVE* was REALLY all about
Neftali: i can't blame young musicians, for no one is teaching them what funk and groove is all about
TruPlaya: Who would you say are the three best drummers who first became prominent in the 1990s?
Neftali:i have no idea, we're talking about funk, and as far as i know, there are no young funk drummers
JazzzyWoman: Has the group considered any sort of joint effort with other artists?..bring the music to the young generation?
Neftali: we're trying to get in touch with Wu-Tang Clan for a Mandrill/ Wu-Tang summit
Neftali: yes, we're totally into it.
nightrain:What would this "summit" consist of? an album? a tour?
shankar boy: Do u like Dennis Chambers?
Neftali: As a musician, dennis is a great drummer...
Neftali: But, he keeps getting catogorized as an o.g. drummer, as in the 70's, but he wasn't there.
FunkyMoon1: Who would you like to work with?
Neftali: Wu-Tang, Wyclef, on the hip hop tip
Jomell: Neftali... Are you currently on this Mandrill reunion tour????
Neftali: most definitely
nightrain:What cities will the tour be playing? (just give us a few)
Neftali: Philly on the 27th... NYC on the 30th... and on the 31st...of July, Brooklyn
FunkyMoon1:I know Nightrain will be in da house in Philly!
Neftali: yeahhh boy
nightrain:(all up in MY neck of the woods...lol)
zuzuu: did santiago ever play w/ carlos santana?
Funkoverlord: Do you feel that controlling the means of production will turns things around?? : for instance...more producers, engineers, managers, pressing and cd manufacturing plants
Neftali: by artists controlled production, yes
nightrain:Is that likely to happen? How so?
Neftali: the web is opening up a whole new world for the urban artist...
nightrain:Is O(+>/Prince leading the way in that respect?
Neftali: To control his own production...yes like Prince
BigDaddyRo: I was wondering what musician influenced Neftali the most ?
Neftali: Buddy Miles, Jimi Hendrix, Yes, Funkadelic, Cold Blood, Ten Wheel Drive Electric Flag
Neftali: Just to name a few
nightrain:Cold Blood - Lydya Pense damn (take me back)
Funkoverlord: I remember see them with tha Funk mob in Pgh.
BigDaddyRo:^5 nightrain LOL
FunkyMoon1: Was Mandrill ripped off by records companies like so many others?
Neftali: Most definitely
Neftali: Mandrill is definitely a missing link in the history of music.period.
Neftali: We influenced so many other bands, and never given proper props
nightrain:"missing link".....in what way?
nightrain:Who did you all influence?
Neftali: do i really need to answer that
nightrain:(yes u do)
Neftali: Brass Construction
Neftali: BT Express
Neftali: Living Colour
shankar boy:Will Calhoun rules
nightrain:Brass Construction & BT Express were also outta Brooklyn, Living Colour was from Queens
Neftali: i don't feel like blowing my horn when it comes to people being influenced by mandrill music, it's for the musician to say... not for me to assume
nightrain:ok.....u gave us an idea...(very graceful)
nightrain:....I can definitely "hear" Mandrill in the Horn sections of Brass Construction and BT Express
shankar boy:most definitely
Neftali: back in the day Mandrill, Funkadelic, Earth Wind and Fire, were all leading the forefront of FUNK
nightrain:i remember those days.....YALL WERE BADD.......(younger people just don't know....:)
nightrain:MANDRILL.....WITH ALL THEIR MONSTER FUNK JAMS...FENCEWALK......HANG LOOSE......MANGO MEAT.......SYMPHONIC REVOLUTION...
nightrain:The music made people THINK (as well as "shake their BOOTY)
Funkoverlord: how did Idris Muhammad or Alphonse Mouszon influence you with there style of drumming
Neftali: Not at all, again, i am self taught, i play from the heart
FunkyMoon1: Do you think funk will reach that level again?
Neftali: yes, but it's going to take the funkateers that are left to act as mentors to the up and coming musicians of the millennium
Neftali: we're getting old, we have to pass it on before we're gone
Neftali: before the music is gone
Funkoverlord: Mandrill for some is always associated with the group WAR....why is that?
Neftali: because of the era we and WAR shared in the pioneering of funk
Neftali: Mandrill in concert gives you a full cup of a musical blend...
Neftali:and you must see the band in concert for the energy of the band has not really been captured on tape
nightrain:This is true...
nightrain:I always think of the two bands as sorta ..."bookends"
Neftali: no...not really
Neftali: Mandrill goes into so many different musical directions that we're compared to a lot of bands from all different styles of music...
Neftali: such as Santana, Sly Stone, Chambers Bros., just to name a few
nightrain:You guys toured with them last year.....what was that like?
Neftali: Actually, i wasn't on that tour so i can't address it
nightrain:Chambers Bros. - "Time Has come Today"
Funkoverlord: what is your concept of the essence of the funk??
NNeftali: FUNK is a blend of rock/soul and the heart and emotion of the beat
FunkyMoon1: Are there any plans for a new album?
Neftali: Yes, we're writing material as we tour...
Neftali: For the next album will come from our experience and connection with the people
Neftali: Going back to a blend of Mandrill Is and Composite Truth
nightrain:Composite Truth was a GREAT album....
Neftali: i agree, it my first with the band
nightrain:...I'm looking at the album cover right now...
Neftali: Oh yeah?... still have a big fro NOW
nightrain:...The picture of the band almost makes me wanna cry....because in that picture i see a hope for the future that now seems lost... ...perhaps never to return It looks like a picture of a world that we will never see...
nightrain:......peace, positivity & strength It makes me PROUD as a BLACK MAN to look at that picture :)
nightrain:Mandrill was the VERY first artist web page that was on the P*Funk Review web site... ...that was done for a reason :)
nightrain:I have one final question...
FM Fats: OK. Has Neftali heard the West Coast band Ozo Matli, and if so, what does he think?
Neftali: children of the sun-gaze into your mind-to catch a fleeting glimpse of time-realizing yesterday's worlds-where kings and queens rode the hight-to mold your tommorrow-today we are there-shine forth-... shine on, shine on
nightrain:Deep, I like those words
Neftali: Inspirational words from Lou Wilson
Jomell: Hey man that was a time were Black men were men..Like us<g>....Respecting our women and mothers and sisters..Call any one of them a ho' or bitch, and suffer the consequences...
Neftali: i know... i hate the disrespect men have towards women
nightrain:Seems we have gone backwards it seems 1,000 years, (& it's our own fault)
Neftali: Lou and Carlos Wilson wrote some timeless lyrics...
Neftali:we should all go back and recapture the Mandrill experince
nightrain:"HEY!,,,,IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SAY,,,,,IT'S WHAT YOU DO,,,,TELLIN WON'T DO IT SOMETHING,,,,DON'T SAY YOU DO,,,,(IF I KNOW YOU DON'T)"
nightrain:I agree....hopefully people will start groovin to the message once again!
Neftali:tellin folks doin something, it's not what you say,
Neftali: We're looking forward to our reunion tour and the live experience of communicating with the people... spreading the message of love and peace on earth... for all mankind
Neftali: If you've never experienced mandrill live, DO IT!!!!!!
nightrain:Thank you Neftali
nightrain:I have been HONORED to have you as a guest...
Neftali: Mandrill is like a drug, once you experience you can't put it down...I know I couldn't
nightrain:....Hopefully some of the people who read this chat both here and on the web.....will find inspiration from your message
Neftali: i'm back for good
Funkoverlord:tell the brothers we said one love Neftali
