    2. Concert Review: African Fest of the Arts 2004 (Dells, Micheal Henderson, Bobbi Humphrey, Norman Connors & Jean Carne)

    Soul To Soul

It's been awhile since I posted a review on any shows for the year 2004. (Due to a lot that has been going on in my life) Nonetheless, I had to post about a wonderful four days I had at the African Festival of the Arts. This is a yearly event that happens every year in Chicago around the Labor Day holiday. This year marked the 15th anniversary of the festival. The lineup this year was awesome!

Day 1 the Dells were the headliner. As soon as I got word that they were going to be performing, I contact MMDells off post, just to confirm that they would be there. He wrote back and told me they would be there and to make sure to stop by and see him, after the show. From that point the wheels were turning in my head. I said to myself, "it's been awhile since I've seen Debra and my partner Karl". By the grace of God, I was able to reunite my Chi-town buddies for this event. Now I really wouldn't call this a SP event, but just a way to see my friends and catch up on a few things and have a good time.

As Debra posted a few days ago, the Dells gave a excellent show, performing all their hits like "There It Is", "The Love We Had"(Stays On My Mind),"Oh What a Night", 'Always Together", "Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation", (by the way Marvin Junior if you're reading this, Karl and I stood up and gave the ladies in the audience a standing "O", when you thought the fellas weren't standing. (lol) So we stood up again :-) ) "A Heart is A House of Love" and of course "Stay In My Corner". Their band was great with a seven-piece horn section. I'm sure they felt the love Chicago gave them, from their performance.
After the show, I was able to get in touch with a gentleman from the Dells organization, (later to find out that he was Marvin Junior's son. He got us some passes and we were able to meet the group. They were happy to see that we showed up and we took a few photos and talked for a little while. (Thank you Mike, Chuck, Vern Johnny, and Marvin, you made my evening GREAT!!!)

Day 2,the headliner for Saturday was Norman Connors with Jean Carn and Michael Henderson. Norman took us back to his jazz roots with a nice instrumental and he dug back to his catalog and pulled out "The Creator Has A Masterplan" from the "You Are My Starship" recording. He had with him a great sax player by the name of Mike Brown. Norman mentioned that he has a CD coming out soon. (I'll keep my eye on it) Norman also had with him guitarist and vocalist Wali Ali. He let Wali take us on a blues journey by performing Z.Z Hill's "Down Home Blues" and Jimmy Reed "Baby What You What
Me to Do". At that time, Norman brought on Jean Carn and she performed "Love Don't Love Nobody", "Don't Let It Go To Your Head", a tribute to Phylis Hyman "Betcha By Golly Wow" and "Closer Than Close" another tribute to the entertainers we lost over the years.

After her set was finished, Michael Henderson came to the stage. He opened up his set with "Take Me,I'm Yours", and brought Jean Carn back to the stage to perform "Valentine Love". He sang "You Are My Starship" and then he did a song I didn't think he would performed. The brotha dug into his funk bag and performed "Wide Receiver".
While he was still in a funk groove, he paid a nice tribute to Rick James and played "You and I". He had everyone on their feet. Karl, a friend of mine named Tony and myself felt that was a great way to paid tribute to brother Rick. Afterward, we saw Michael Henderson and told him that Soul Patrol was here. He smiled and shook our hands.

Day 3, Ms.Bobbi Humphrey performed and she took us on a jazzy memory lane by performing "Coming Home,Baby", in memory of flautist Herbie Mann. She also performed a cover of Lionel Richie's "Hello" and then took me back by playing a number that Stevie Wonder wrote and played harmonica on "Home Made Jam". She finished her set with the classic "Harlem River Drive".

Day 4, the last day of the festival Isaac Hayes closed out the show with a wonderful set. Opening up the show with the disco classic "Don't Let Go". He talked to the audience and told us how important is was to go to Africa and to discover the natural resources the country has and to help the people over there that's dying in huge numbers. He also mentioned that the city of Ghana honored him and gave him a name, (which I can't remember). From that point, he went back into the funk groove and performed
"Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic", and dug into the Shaft soundtrack and performed "Do Your Thing". When he slowed the set down, he perform the classics "Walk on By", "Never Can Say Goodbye", By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and " I Stand Accused". He finished the show with the "Theme From Shaft".

So you see, I had a GREAT Labor day weekend with four days of great music, great friends, and great weather. If I don't attend another show this year in 2004, I must say this was on of the best!

Debra,Karl, and my good friend and 'HPK listener Tony thanks for hangin' out with me. I had a BLAST!!!

    'Til next time......

    3. Black History: My First Concert May/1964 - Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, Solomon Burke, The Drifters, Mitti Collier The Womack brothers and The Upsetters

I recall my first concert at the Bell Auditorium in Augusta, Georgia. My sister and I were 14 and 15 years old; It was a warm night in May of 1964. My sister and I were not allowed to attend concerts alone and so Mamie had agreed to take us. On our front porch that night 24 year old Mamie, who was the daughter of my mother's friend, assured my mother that she would take care of us and make sure that we get home safe. We were so excited and so dressed up; in comparison to today's teens. I don't remember being a huge Sam Cook fan, but surely I must have had a favorite of the 14 acts that night; yes 14 acts at a cost of $1.85 cents.

I am trying hard to remember the acts; a few come to mind. Dionne Warwick, Solomon Burke, The Drifters, Miti Collier and The Upsetters band featuring The Womack brothers. I was in awe of the glamour. All the acts were in star-studded attire; complete with sequined gowns. I had never seen black women so glamorous. This might have been before the Supremes made their debut on the Ed Sullivan show. I was mesmerized as we watched Sam Cooke move about the stage with such poise and dignity. His voice was sultry and sweet. It would be later in life that I would come to appreciate his natural hairdo; It must have taken a lot of courage to wear a natural style when all other entertainers were conking their hair. After that night live concerts would become a big part of my life. Later that year Sam Cooke and our friend Mamie would both lose their lives to Black-on-Black violence.

    4. Will Wheaton's Notes From Stevie's Last Weekend

    Will Wheaton

Man did we have a good time. First off let me just say thanks again to everyone who was able to make it out. Shout out to Adam and Linda Jackson the world's most beautiful couple, Mr. Dennie Roe and his whole crew of party lovers happy birthday Ashley. My girl Amber and her whole crew oh My God she brought like 20 people (take notes people). We had an awesome time last night the room was full of energy and just a genuine good feeling. The first set was a little slow getting started an also a bit sad with the memory of those that lost their lives on 9/11/01. We must truly never forget. As I said last night it could have been anyone of us. Make sure to keep those families in your prayers.

Second show was simply a celebration of everything that we could celebrate.
We rocked so hard we couldn't stop. One of the highlights of the second show was my man Adam Jackson (that's right the hardest working man in showbiz) coming up and joining me on Ain't No Stopping us Now. And we didn't stop till it was finished. I got to tell it got a little special up in there when we got to "IN Between the Sheets". Let's just say a brother had himself a good time with an audience member. And we'll leave it there. But the party didn't stop there. After I left the stage Hami and the band broke into another song "777-9311". The funk pulled me right back for some more and we proceeded to go into some Prince we absolutely rocked the house. All in all it was an awesome time.
Special thanks to my band Brandon Coleman(Keys), James Jefferson (Bass), Hami (Guitar),And Dammon Riddick (Drums).

You guys are awesome and I appreciate the fact that you're willing to work with me. Also, shout out to my girl Ms. Pattye who helped me move product. Look out for Ms. Pattye on the new CD. Yep that's right the girl can sang a little taste too.... You'll enjoy the way she Does Her Thang...Much love to ya baby girl. Until we do it again.
