As you all know Soul-Patrol is an independent operation. However it's not a "non profit organization". (Although it feels like one most of the time.....lol)
Soul-Patrol has many different types of expenses...
We have to pay for everything from bandwidth to insurance to rent to telephone bills to circuit fees to Internet broadcasting fees and more. That's not to mention the substantial "free labor" that Mike and I put into the site and the infrastructure that the site is built upon.
Obviously this can at times be an overwhelming and difficult thing to do on multiple levels. Nearly every day we are faced with some type of a financial/technological crisis that threatens to shut down the site. Some days are better than others.
That is part of the price that you have to pay in order to be an independent entity.
The reality is that it would be pretty easy to "sell out" to some larger entity.
However we feel that the ultimate price for doing so would be TOO HIGH.
If we were to do that, we would LOSE CONTROL OVER THE CONTENT OF THE SITE. And in our view, losing control of the content of the site would mean that the site would have come to the end of the reason for the site to exist.
If that were to happen, there would be many different entities out there that would be very happy.
* Culture Bandits
* Media Companies
* Knee-Gro Radio Station Operators (and their defenders)
* Crooked Promoters
* etc.
Soul-Patrol is a HUGE thorn in the side of these entities, not only because of our content, but also because of our tremendous reach in cyberspace. Although it's a small entity,
Soul-Patrol has an amazing reach and influence in the world of music/culture that is within its scope. We have some mind-boggling numbers and it's easy to find for anyone on the Internet that is interested in our music/culture.
At any given point in time you can find us in the top ten on the search engines (multiple times).
* this is the reason why the site gets...
THREE MILLION HITS PER MONTH
* why our experimental internet radio station gets...
EIGHTY THOUSAND LISTENERS PER MONTH
* why our newsletter/email blasts reach...
TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND READERS EVERY WEEK
Those are the kinds of numbers that STRIKE FEAR INTO THE HEARTS of the: Culture Bandits, Media Companies, Knee-Gro Radio Station Operators (and their defenders), Crooked Promoters, etc.
The reality is that those entities do not want the type of content we provide to be exposed to the CONTENT we provide to such a LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE.
A few examples...
**Do you really think that Queen Latifah's record company wants us to piggyback on their marketing efforts to promote the INDEPENDENT music of Marlon Saunders, D-Erania, Eloise Laws, Bobbi Humphrey, Kne-O'Chaw Hampton?
http://www.soul-patrol.net/jazz3.ram
**Do you really think that the powers that be, who are trying to send Micheal Jackson to jail, when there is no evidence of any crime having been commited really wants millions of people to come to Soul-Patrol each month and see advertising for Geraldine Hughes book plastered all over the place?
http://www.redemption-michaeljacksonstory.com
**Do you really think that the Knee-gro radio station operators really want thousands of people listening to Soul-Patrol.Net radio's broadcast of the "Plantation Radio Stations" seminar from the 2004 Soul-Patrol East Coast Convention?
http://www.soul-patrol.net/2004convplant.ram
**Do you really think that the handlers of Lenny Kravitz want to see the commentary that I wrote about him last week distributed to 25,000 people?
http://www.soul-patrol.com/newsletter/2004/news17
**Do you really think that VH-1 and Rolling Stone magazine (the folks who actually run the RRHOF Induction ceremonies) want us to talk about the RACIST treatment of the Dells at an event that allegedly was supposed to "honor them"?
http://www.soul-patrol.com/rr_index.html
**etc...
Soul-Patrol is able to provide this type of content ONLY because of its sponsors. Now, to be sure, "sponsorship" takes many forms and there are many different entities out there that provide all kinds of assistance to us, that enable us to continue doing the things that we do.
However there are a few entities that go above and beyond in their support, these would be the people who provide us with financial support to enable us to pay the bills we need to pay, just to exist. Without that financial support, we wouldn't be able to run the site the way that we have to, our families would suffer and Mike and I would simply shut down the entire operation.
I realize that most of you realize this, so I hope that this discussion did not bore you too much. However I wanted to use this opportunity as a reminder that what we are doing here is quite unique and could easily go away without the support of people like our new sponsors...
These are the INDEPENDENT entities that support the concept of what we are attempting to accomplish here. They understand that the very idea of Soul-Patrol's existence means that their message can reach the same people that they are trying to reach. Their options for doing so without an entity like Soul-Patrol become VERY limited.
They like the idea that not only are we in a position to provide them with a large amount of exposure on the internet, but they like the idea that we aren't afraid to tackle some of the very same issues and entities that are preventing them from achieving their goals. I think that they also like the idea that we are using technology in creative ways to do so. (Remember Black folks aren't supposed to be able to do that)
Anyhow...
I'd like each and every one of you to take a moment from your busy schedules to take a look at the websites of our newest sponsors. Check out their music, check out the things that they have to offer at their sites. Take a moment to drop them an email while you are there, if for no other reason to let them know that you passed their way...
Feel free to pass this email along to your friends, families & colleagues on the internet and ask them to do the same thing...

4. Afro-Punk Office Set on Fire: Some terrible news (and you can help!!!)
Some of you may recall the brilliant and groundbreaking film called Afro-Punk. It was reviewed here extensively on the Soul-Patrol Digest by many of you around the country who saw it in various venues and it was even seen by many of you here who saw it at the 2004 Soul-Patrol East Coast Convention. Right now the people behind Afro-Punk need our help, due to an unexpected disaster. I strongly recommend that if you are in a position to assist our friend Mr. James Spooner that you please do so. And as we here on Soul-Patrol observe the passing of Mr. James Marshall Hendrix back in September 1970, by discussing and featuring the legacy of Jimi right on the front page of our website, I can't think of a more appropriate time to do so!!!
Thanks in advance...
--Bob Davis
On Monday Sept. 13th at around 2pm the building that houses the afro-punk offices was set on fire. Apparently, the first floor failing clothing store owner, in an act of desperation, set a phone book on fire and took a little walk. Meanwhile Afro-Punk's director James Spooner was two flights up discussing his upcoming panel on music as a tool for black liberation with a colleague. "We heard the bell ringing and a lot of screaming and yelling" says James. The guilty store owner, alerted James and his friend of the blaze below. Thinking quickly James ran back into the office unplugged his Mac tower, which houses the documentary and hobbled down the stairs through the smoke and flames . "Man, maybe it was stupid, but this film has effected too many people for it to all end here, let the rest burn, I had to save it!"
Luckily fire fighters acted quickly on the scene and were able to stabilize the fire. Flames never reached our office but the NYFD destroyed the place trying to make sure the fire wasn't in the walls or ceiling.
After the smoke literally cleared they were allowed back up to access the damage. All in all it could have been worse. The Afro-Punk computers and camera are still working, the 200 hours of footage afro-punk was cut from seems to be okay and the work for our next film is safe. We did lose some furniture, a monitor and some vcrs from our dubbing station, but most tragic, we lost our donated office space.
So here we are, putting out a plea to you, the wonderful people who have supported afro-punk, spread the word about the movement and wish to see us continue our important work. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help us get back on our feet, we have a Pay-Pal account set up.
Afro-Punk Donations
You can also send something by mail to 802 Nostrand Ave. #2 Brooklyn NY 11216. Please make all checks out to afro punk llc. We are offering free T-shirts and dvd's as a thank you for your gift.
If you can donate office space for a few months while our old place is reconstructed it would be greatly appreciated. If you have anything else that you think might be helpful to reconstructing a functioning office we would be most grateful. Afro-Punk films has been run been very hand to mouth, so any donations would help tremendously.
Below is a list of things we need to get back to business as usual.
1 office space
1 desk
2 file cabinets
4 VCRs
1 television monitor
1 dvd player
1 dv deck
1 CD-R and DVD-R's.
2 shelving units
1 bulletin board
1 stereo receiver
2 Audio speakers
Various computer wires for macs
Regular office supplies, Pens, folders, staplers, 3 hole punch,
As you can see it runs from large to small. If you can help please do. If you can't we appreciate your emotional support. And hey spread the word about afro-punk most of our income comes from screenings so if you know of a university, organization or individual that would like to show the film let them know what's up.
LOVE and REVOLUTION.
