1. It's been a whole month since the last issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter for two reasons:

- I have been busy traveling around the country attending some GREAT summer music events. That's one of the reasons why this issue is packed with concert reviews. In fact we have so many rviews that we have to hold a few out (Maryland Music Festival, Mothers Finast/AWB, Ray Parker Jr/BlackByrds, etc) till the next issue.

- I have had computer problems the past two weeks. Infact the hard drive on my personal machine crashed and I lost my email address book. If you haven't gotten a personal email from me in the last two weeks, it means that I no longer have your email address on my personal machine. If you think that you are supposed to be in my persoanl email address book, hit me with a quick email at: earthjuice@prodigy.net.

2. Question of the Week: MySpace recently announced that they were going to be putting in a system to allow indy artists to sell individual songs (MP3 Format) directly from their MySpace pages and to sell them at whatever price they want to. With the popularity of both MySpace and iPod's (we already know that a whole bunch of yall own iPod's based on our survey earlier this year) this can only be a good thing for indy artists and a good thing for iPod owners. My question to you is what price would you consider buying say 10 songs/week for your iPod? (just click on your choice below and shoot me a quick email)

On the morning 8/20/2006I woke up early on a Sunday morning despite having been out late the night before attending the Hil St. Soul show in Philly. That's because I had the honor of interviewing the legendary...

MR. ARCHIE BELL (from Houston Texas)

at an "undisclosed location" in NYC earlier today.

Actually it's less of an "interview" and more of a "conversation" that also included Mrs. Juanita Bell (Archie's wife)and Soul-Patrol's NYC Coordinator Cheryl Russell.

CONCERT REVIEWS - HIL ST. SOUL Philly (8/19), Annapolis (8/22)

We had a chance to check out emerging Soul music superstar Hil St. Soul at her shows in Philadelphia and Annapolis. The long awaited return of Hil St. Soul to these shores happened and Soul-Patrol was there to review the shows.....Phenomenon British song stylist Hilary Mwelwa, is a Beautiful Brown Sista (smile) born in Lusaka, Zambia Africa. The London based vocalist and band on an East Coast Tour, engaged a one night stop at the Ram's Head in Annapolis, just blocks from the historic entry-port docking site of Kunta Kenta...(click here to continue)

CONCERT REVIEW: Fred Wesley @ Iridium in NYC

Here are reviews from some of the Soul-Patrol's Fred Wesley ticket winners: Fred and the group performed such tunes as Bosa, a Fred Wesley composition, a cute Sonny Rollins composition, the Duke Ellington tune Caravan, and wrapped it up with a super funky jazzed up version of Herbie Hancock's Chameleon. We had a wonderful time, the set was just too short, but no complaints! It was a fun night! The best part of it all was listening to "real" musicians playing real music and just getting into the groove of the show! Thank you all again for the opportunity to attend a great show by one of our master sidemen, Mr. Fred Wesley. We look forward to reading his book....(click here to continue)

Concert Review - Classic Soul Music Superstar Billy Paul @ Metro Tech Center Bam R&B Fest - Brooklyn NY 8/10/06

If I could sum up this show in one word, it would be "wonderful." With Billy Paul accessible to his fans before and after the free outdoor noontime concert, posing for pictures and signing autographs to any and all who asked, there was just a warm vibe in the air throughout the afternoon. And with the 72 year old vocalist stripped down to his undershirt on this hot day, it felt like you were in someone's backyard at a party....(click here to continue) ...

Introducing: Traciana Graves - "Songs of a Prodical Daughter"

The album "Prodigal Daughter" from Traciana Graves is a good modern day example of the inter relationship between oul music and the music of Africa/Caribbean (sometimes referred to"world music").. Traciana Graves was born in Harlem, U.S. A. and was largely raised in France. I'm guessing that such an upbringing must have provided her with the international perspective that runs like a thread thru ought this album.....(continued)...

CONCERT REVIEW - Candi Staton (w/Stephanie McKay) @ World Café Live 8/11 (“All Good and Perfect Gifts Come From God”)

For those of you who might be wondering about the sub title of this review, I just wanted you to know that while I haven't turned into a "religious evangelist", I have turned into a "Candi Staton Evangelist". You see there came a point in time during the show when Candi Staton said "All Good and Perfect Gifts Come From God" . And when she made the statement, it struck me that although she was talking about religion, it was also a perfect description of what I was seeing and hearing at the concert. And that was indeed not a surprise at all because on the previous night I had seen Candi Staton give an abbreviated version of her full show at a private event in New Jersey. I had talked with her and her band at length about the past, present and future. So therefore tonight's show in Philly was strictly about the music, I was primed for a great performance with one of the greatest vocal performers in the history of Black music, and I wasn't disappointed...........(continued)...

CONCERT REVIEW: Ambushed By A Old School California Funk/Jazz/R&B/Latin Band Called War

Funny thing happened while I was waiting to see Ohio Players in Concert last Saturday! I was ambushed by a old school California Funk/Jazz/R&B/Latin band called War.

It was a scorching 102-105 degree day in Cali. I had my pop-up 10 x10 shade tent up. Ice chest was full of whatever, had my blanket, chairs, good friends and was ready for the day at the park. (Actually it was at the local city college) It was a nice crowd, kids, teenagers, families, mom's, dads, old school pimp wannabee's dressed for the part, you name it and it was represented. It reminded me of the good old days back in Pasadena when it was all fun, family and friends and all day concerts at the park. Back in the day we had what is now commonly referred to as "Real Music". I would go to the Rose Bowl for the Kool Jazz festival and see Stevie Wonder, Grover Washington, Andre Crouch, The Whispers, man it's just too many to name....(click here to continue)






CONCERT REVIEW: Concert Review: Ledisi at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, Seattle, WA


A question that inevitably comes up in this day and age where electronically pitch corrected vocals seems to be a pre-requisite for any "hit" Pop or R&B song, is "what happened to all the REAL soul/r&b singers?" Yes, we still have Aretha, Chaka, Gladys, Patti and Mavis with us among other great singers from back in the day. But who will carry the torch when they're gone?

If you've taken time to dig below the surface, you probably know about Lalah Hathaway and Rachelle Ferrell, you're probably checking artists like Jill Scott and Erykah Badu as well. Sadly, the art of great singing (or playing instruments for that matter) has fell by
the wayside to some degree. But even so, there are still a few shining stars out there and one of them is LEDISI.

Ledisi and her band performed at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley here in Seattle this past Tuesday and Wednesday. I've been a fan for several years and I've seen her live a few times before, so I knew what to expect and because of that I wasn't going to miss either of the two nights!

On each night Ledisi and her band kicked off the set with her own interpretation of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon." One of the things I love about Ledisi, is that she does a great job of making other people's songs her own. When performing Chameleon, her band laid down a funky groove reminiscent of the original, but it had a little more of a swing to it. Ledisi than scatted the original melody and launched into a verse of her own: "If we all had no eyes / We could not see / Then color wouldn't matter to you or me / All we could do is feel our way. / Times are changing every day, so those that are left in the past / close your eyes and just feel." From just reading the lyrics, it might be difficult to imagine how they would sound, but they were delivered with soul and conviction.

Soul-Patrol.com Weekend in Cleveland - Family Unity Festival/Ghost Bar Classic Soul Meets Neo Soul (w/THE OHIO PLAYERS, Conya Doss, Fertile Ground, ALGEBRA, GOVERNOR, Paul Samuels, Soundoctrine, The AfiNur Project (Classic Soul /Jazz/ Neo Soul)

--- Myron Ruffin, one of the key organizers of the Family Unity Festival, invited me to come. Myron is a brotha that I have worked with on several different projects over the years. He has put some serious "skin in the game" in supporting Soul-Patrol over the past few years and we have developed a close working relationship. Like many people who contribute to what we do here, I have never met him in person and I wanted to do that as well as SHOW UP and support his event.

--- Our friends SounDoctrine was on the bill, and I wanted to SHOW UP and support them and their new CD ENDURANCE

--- This gave us the opportunity to have a Soul-Patrol "Meet and Greet" in Cleveland the night before the Family Unity Festival and turn it into a "weekend" for those who wanted to participate and hang out with each other.

--- The nature of the festival itself was very appealing to me. To have a big music/cultural festival featuring Classic Soul Music, Neo Soul Music and Jazz artists (w/THE OHIO PLAYERS, Conya Doss, Fertile Ground, ALGEBRA, GOVERNOR, Paul Samuels, Soundoctrine, The AfiNur Project) right in the middle of the ghetto called "Family Unity" is a throwback to the types of community based events I had grown up with in NYC when I was a teenager and I wanted to expose my (suburban) daughter to that type of an event.

--- It gave me a chance to take a 3 day "road trip" with my family. There's nothing like being trapped inside of an automobile for eight hours at a time to foster "family closeness". We also made a little side trip along the way to Pittsburgh so my 13 year old daughter the campus of the University of Pittsburgh (yes I am trying to influence her college decision...lol).....CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE
