Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

We wanted to devote this issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter to look back at 9/11/2001 from Soul-Patrol's unique perspective, five years later. First off we want to remember Lt. Leroy Homer, a brotha whose name is often forgotten about when people are talking about 9-11. As you can see from the letter written to me by his wife, the family of Lt. Leroy Homer are Soul-Patrollers and were a part of our very first Soul-Patrol Convention back in 2002.

As some of you out there may recall, the 2002 Soul-Patrol Convention [featuring our special guests Bernie Worrell (P-Funk), Vince Montana, Wilbert Hart (Delfonics), Cliff Perkins (Soul Generation), the Ebony's and of course Mr. Billy Paul] raised money for the Open Up My Heart Foundation", an entity created by the MIGHTY, MIGHTY DELLS to assist the "forgotten victims" of the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

And the faces of those "forgotten victims" are something that my brother Mike and I personally know all too well, having worked in the area of the World Trade Center in NYC for about 10 years.

I realize that there are some of you out there who could care less about 9-11 and are most likely sick of hearing about it. You are entitled to that perspective, and I would suggest that you might want to take this moment in time to check out the internet resources of some of our advertisers by clicking on some of the links down the right column of this document.

For us, the events of 9-11 and it's aftermath impacted Soul-Patrol because of the intersection of a tragic event with our music/culture. So take a look and read how we remember September 11, 2001 here on Soul-Patrol and let me know what cha think???

Pour a Taste For A Brotha Who Is No Longer With Us

Twin Towers I initially wrote this piece in December of 2001, so some of you may want to skip past it this time around. I wanted to repeat it today, because of an amazing web page (to me) that I became aware of...

Brian Jones...

I saw this web page and I started crying.
After I composed myself I realized what a truly great thing this site was and
I decided to write this piece for several reasons.

1. I wanted to further honor my friend, seeing this kind of brought a sense of closure for me
2. I wanted put the face of a real human being to what I had wrote about him
3. I wanted to humanize the MIND BLOWING HORROR of what has happened
4. I wanted to put the site out there so that anyone else who may have lost a loved one to know that there is a place that they are memorialized, especially since for many, their loved one hasn't been recovered

Anyhow, here is the original piece...
The link is posted again at the end
....Bob Davis
-----------------------

Brian Jones was my friend
We went to High School together and we lived in the same neighborhood. My parents and his parents were friends. His father was an NBA referee. We used to hang out together at basketball courts & lots of other places. We used to tease him about his lack of skills on the court...

Brian was what some people would refer to as a "pretty boy". During the 1970's when we were going to HS he wore an afro so high, that it seemed to touch the sky Some females who hung around us referred to Brian as "foine". Some said that he looked like Max Jullien, in the "Mack". While the rest of us were chasing females, women chased Brian..

When we went to "blue light basement parties", outside of our neighborhood, Brian was always the one who grinded with the best looking women and who would always end up with the most phone numbers at the end of the night.

Brian Jones was also a pretty smart guy, an avid reader. His standardized test scores were always very high. However, in school, he was a poor student. The teachers would often say, "Brian, if only you would apply yourself..."
What they didn't know is that, Brian DID "apply himself"…He "applied himself", in areas of music, philosophy, politics, women, sociology, etc.

He was an excellent conversationalist, as were all of the members of our "crew". He was a participant in the many RAGING conversations that our "crew" would have, long into hot summer nights (on a front stoop, a basketball court, street corner, etc.) about music, philosophy, politics, women, sociology, etc.

In these conversations, there was rarely agreement between the participants In fact none of the disagreements were without serious friction However the friction didn't matter much, what was important was the sharing of the idea, regardless of how idiotic it might seem like on the surface In fact, many of these conversations would end with the "traditional pouring of a taste for the brotha's who are no longer with us..."

And with that, everyone would go home, just a little wiser and just a little closer with each other

It was 1973 and our "crew" thought that we could change the world It all seemed possible.

All that we could hope for and plan seemed to be within our grasp. After all, since we were young, had ideas, and had the time to implement them, there was nothing to stop us..

After High School I kinda lost track of Brian Jones.
Time and space separated the two of us as it has many of my friends from that era. The last time that I saw him was in 1980 or so.

Earlier today, I was driving into NYC to attend an event that I had planned on writing about tonight. As I passed the last exit of the NJ Turnpike and I caught a glimpse of the NYC skyline. I saw that "aura", that surely all New Yorkers must see, where two buildings that I know quite well should be. I also noticed that the other buildings now seemed to be much bigger than before, now that their "big brothers" were no longer there to minimize their size. A chill ran down my spine and I quickly turned my head.

About an hour ago, I was talking with another old friend of mine He told me that on the morning of 9/11 Brian called his mother on the phone; from the 80'th floor of WTC #2, to tell her that he was ok. That was the LAST TIME anyone heard from him...

Right at this moment, I don't feel much like writing about any event! Tonight, I am pouring a taste for Brian. I know that wherever he is, he has got yet another idea, might be a good one, might be a bad one, Either way, it's an idea from Brian Jones is always an idea that is worth listening to...

Music In My Mind - Commuting To The World Trade Center (pre 9/11)

Good Foot I wrote this little essay in 1997 and it's a meaningless little musical story about my then commute to the World Trade Center area of Manhattan. Today this meaningless little story is something that can't even happen in 2006. Here on the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on NYC, I thought a few of you might enjoy reading it as well....Bob Davis
===========================

I don't know if I have mentioned this before, but when I have to use mass transit to go to work, I always have my Walkman with me (surprise surprise!!)

Yesterday I missed my 6:30 bus to Wall St, so I had to take the 6:40 bus to the Port Authority bus terminal on 42nd st. While the bus is on the New Jersey Turnpike., I usually listen to a tape & drift off to sleep or listen to the music while I am working on the laptop. As soon as I get within range of NYC, I flip the tape off & switch to my favorite radio station WWRL 1600 AM 100% "Pure Soul".

Today I forgot to turn the radio off as I entered the subway station as I got off the bus. While in the subway you can't pick up any radio stations, but I hardly noticed amid the hustle & bustle of the rush hour The train ride itself is a short 10 min ride from Times Square to the World Trade Center on the A train. As I left the Chambers St. station and the radio began to make sounds. It got louder & louder as I walked up the stairs to the street level & all of the sudden I heard....

..."LONG HAIR HIPPIES AND THE AFRO BLACKS SHOULD ALL GET TOGETHER AND CROSS THE TRACKS......" A BIG PARTAAAYYYYY ::::::::::WHEW:::::::::::ON THE GOOD FOOT!!!

I dunno if those are even the correct words. You see even though I have heard this song 1,000 times the person who is the lead singer is into such a FUNKY afro-polyrythmic "trance"...."testifyin"..., that to this day I don't even think that he even knows what the phuck he is singing....:)

Upon hearing these sounds I began to smile and I could feel myself standing a little taller and bouncing as I stepped through the canyons that are the very definition of capitalist Amerikkka.

I was "sho nuff" bouncing and gliding as the brotha on the radio said

"You are in the middle of a DOUBLE PLAY from the GODFATHER OF SOUL..."

& then I heard the singers voice once again...

"There was a Time........"

.....& I continued to "bop" my way down the streets of lower Manhattan towards my destination. The building I work in is unable to pick up AM radio stations. Just as I entered the building's double glass door entrance, directly across the street from a building that is such an international symbol of capitalist oppression, that Arab terrorists seek to blow it up on almost a monthly basis, I heard the singer scream into my ears:

"I MAY NOT DO THE DANCE AS WELL AS YOU.....BUT YOU CAN BET YOU HAVEN'T
SEEN NUTHIN YET......
..............UNTIL YOU SEE ME DO.....................

...............................THE JAMES BROWN....HEEYYYYYYYYYY"

And with that the radio station cut off & the music ended as I entered the building I work in, a massive glass and marble structure that is easily the most opulent & decadent office building I have ever seen.

Suddenly I felt like a "Stranger in a Strange Land"

.

2002 Soul-Patrol Convention, Mighty Dells & Leroy Homer

2002 Soul-Patrol Convention These brothas need no introduction around here! This is a very special year for the brothas out of Harvey, IL. They are celebrating their 50th year in the music business this year. Although I'm sure they didn't plan it this way, in addition to celebrating their long and fruitful career, they are also about doing something quite serious. They are engaged in something that is all about doing something positive for their fellow man!

The DELLS established the OPEN UP MY HEART FOUNDATION. This foundation exists for one and ONLY one reason. It's all about GIVING MONEY to the "forgotten victims" of last year's TERRORIST ATTACK ON THE UNITED STATES.

Who are these "forgotten victims"?
Well over the course of the past few months, we learned quite a bit about just who those victims are. And during the course of our recent Soul-Patrol Convention, we were able to put a face on one of them.

LT. LEROY HOMER

How many of you out there remember who LT. LEROY HOMER is?

or

DID YOU FORGET ABOUT HIM ALSO? Go here and read about LT. LEROY HOMER Please DON'T EMBARASS YOURSELVES by NOT knowing who he is

He is someone that you should ALL remember and keep his name etched in your mind. Don't be ASHAMED to REMEMBER someone that BIG MEDIA HAS FORGOTTEN...

Don't be ASHAMED TO TELL YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO FORGET LT. LEROY HOMER

Don't be ASHAMED to REMEMBER ALL OF THE FORGOTTEN VICTIMS OF THE TERRORIST ATTACKS

Yes, the MIGHTY, MIGHTY DELLS are coming to Philly.
We are gonna listen to them sing
We are gonna watch them dance

But more importantly…We are gonna present to them a check. That check was made possible by the donations made by those of you who purchased tickets to the 2002 Soul-Patrol East Coast Convention.

* REGARDLESS OF WHERE IN THE WORLD YOU LIVE
* REGARDLESS OF YOUR RACE
* REGARDLESS OF YOUR ECONOMIC STATUS
* REGARDLESS OF IF YOU CAME TO THE SOUL-PATROL CONVENTION

Those of you out there who OPENED UP YOUR HEARTS, REACHED INTO YOUR WALLETS AND PULLED OUT THE CREDIT CARD TO GIVE...GET PROPS FROM ME.

Please...Every last one of you who purchased a ticket

"GIVE YOURSELVES A STANDING OVATION"

(and you will sure get a hand from the MIGHTY DELLS)

In my opinion EVERYONE here should give the MIGHTY, MIGHTY DELLS a STANDING OVATION, just as they did for EVERYONE HERE on Soul-Patrol this past Monday night in Philadelphia at the Dell East Amphitheatre.

Oh and by the way, I mean that quite literally...
During their performance of the song "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation..."

At one point, the group stopped singing while the band continued to play...

Chuck Barksdale grabbed the microphone and said...
"The Dells want to give a STANDING OVATION to Soul-Patrol..."

Then all 5 of the Dells started clapping. With that the audience started clapping and then Chuck Barksdale said...

"I want to introduce to you all, Mr. Bob Davis of Soul-Patrol..."

I took the microphone and introduced Mike Davis, Blanche Valentine, Will Chill and Billy Paul to the crowd, said a few words and then handed off the check for the OPEN UP YOUR HEART FOUNDATION to BILLY PAUL to give to Chuck.

At that point I couldn't have been PROUDER.
(The Mighty Dells actually gave a STANDING OVATION to ALL of Soul-Patrol)
And of course yall deserve it, for making a contribution to the Open Up Your Heart Foundation, and providing assistance to the "forgotten victims" of the 9/11 TERRORIST ATTACKS AGAINST THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES.

Did all of this REALLY happen in Philadelphia on 8/26/2002?
(of course it did...)

....and I got the pictures to prove it.....lol
