Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

Just a few tidbits before we get rolling...

Supremes` Mary Wilson has heart attack

LAS VEGAS, NV, United States (UPI) -- Mary Wilson, one of the original members of the Motown hitmakers The Supremes, suffered a heart attack in Las Vegas and will have bypass surgery.

Wilson suffers from hereditary high blood cholesterol and was hospitalized with chest pains on Friday, PR Insider reported. Surgery was scheduled for Monday, a family member said.

The 62-year-old was a founding member of the 1960`s chart-toppers singing with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard on such hits as 'Baby Love,' and 'Where Did Our Love Go.'

Wilson had been performing about 150 concert dates a year, her publicist Jay Schwartz said.
Quiet as it's kept, Mary Wilson is a longtime member of Soul-Patrol, some of you will remember this interview I conducted with her a few years ago. More importantly, Mary Wilson is an activist for the rights of artists and is one of the key people responsible for the legislation being passed in many states providing legal remedy for OUR artists in the fight against FAKE GROUPS and CROOKED PROMOTERS. When I last saw Mary about a year ago, she looked great both onstage and offstage. Please do two things for me…

1. Go to Mary Wilson's site at: www.marywilson.com and drop her a line.
2. Say a prayer for Mary Wilson and her family. She truly is one of the "good guys"!

Katherine Dunham, Dancer and Choreographer, Dies at 96

NEW YORK (AP) -- Katherine Dunham, a pioneering dancer and choreographer, author and civil rights activist who left Broadway to teach culture in one of America's poorest cities, has died. She was 96.

Dunham died Sunday at the Manhattan assisted living facility where she lived, said Charlotte Ottley, executive liaison for the organization that preserves her artistic estate. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Dunham was perhaps best known for bringing African and Caribbean influences to the European-dominated dance world. In the late 1930s, she established the nation's first self-supporting all-black modern dance group.

''We weren't pushing `Black is Beautiful,' we just showed it,'' she later wrote.

Music Time/Relativity Question?

In 1968, I was 11 years old.
My favorite artist at that time was probably Sly and the Family Stone.
That is music that is 38 years old.
I was 11 years old when that music came out.
I was a fan of it then and I am a fan of it now.

As I think back to the time when I was 11 years old and imagine that if someone had come along and tried to tell me how good some song was that had been made 38 years previous, they would have been talking about a song that had been made in 1930.

(I wouldn't have been interested in it at all)

Imagine if you are an 11 year old kid in 2006 and someone came along and tried to tell you about a song that was made in 1968.

Do you think they would they be interested?

Since I started posting on the internet about the 2006 Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival, I have been getting a lot of questions about the event. Some people are confused about what it is and what it isn't. Just to try and add a little clarity on what it is, I want to re-post my reports from last year's Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival. It was truly a unique experience for me to have been a part of and after it was
over, I made a pledge to myself and to the organizers that I would do what I could to try and help this event grow.

Check out the report from last year and if you are going to be in the Philly area next weekend come on out. Also check the front page of the Soul-Patrol website for the flyer and more info...

-----------------------------------------------------------------
REPORT FROM DAY ONE/2005

We had a great time on day one of this great community event in Philadelphia. The vibe/groove reminded me much of the 1970s. It was kind of like a "BLACK WOODSTOCK" type of groove...

This is the first year of the annual event and SOUL-PATROL is quite pleased to have been asked to be included. It's really a celebration of all that is positive and good in OUR culture that is the vision of MARK GAINES, a very talented artist/designer/activist.

The whole idea is a very simple one

TAKE BACK OUR CULTURE FROM THOSE WHO HAVE PERVERTED IT
AND GIVE IT TO OUR CHILDREN.

It's a very simple but revolutionary concept. Who knows maybe it might just catch on? We spent all day today talking with people in the Philadelphia area who are actively engaged in making it happen and working OUTSIDE OF THE LOCAL KNEE-GRO STATUS QUO to engage people directly in taking responsibility for their own lives and their future.

Now all that sounds pretty serious and cerebral, however I don't want to mislead you. We had tons of fun running the SOUL-PATROL booth at the festival as we engaged people directly on a musical tip from the past, present, and the future.

We brought Soul-Patrol.Net Radio to the proceedings and Eddie Bowman, Olajide Bolden and myself not only jammed to the NEW MUSIC from artist like Square Egg, Marlon Saunders, Mandrill, Chilites, Will Wheaton and plenty more for 6 hours but also engaged people in conversations about why they weren't able to hear the NEW MUSIC from these artist on local knee-gro radio (WDAS) and why they couldn't find these new CDs in the big chain record stores.

Of course folks were surprised that so much good music was out there and that they had no knowledge of its existence. They were glad that a radio station like Soul-Patrol Net existed. We were able to sign nearly everyone who came to the booth to the Soul-Patrol Newsletter, so that they could receive updates to the programming on Soul-Patrol.Net Radio.

And of course we told them EXACTLY how they could get the music (by going directly to the artist websites, ordering them online and by checking the new Soul-Patrol Times Listings of events right on the Soul-Patrol Homepage so they will know when these artist come to town)

We will be out there again tomorrow (5/22) from 12 noon till 6pm Come on by If you are in the area...

"think global act local..."
-Mayor Richard Daley

REPORT FROM DAY TWO/2005:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The second day of the event was even better than the first. After day one I was especially pumped up.

I started the day by walking around and talking with each one of the vendors at the event while they were setting up and introduced myself, apologizing for not having done so on the previous day. Engaging these vendors in conversation was great because the conversations were all about Black Owned Business on the most basic level. I was able to introduce these folks to Soul-Patrol, sign them up to the Newsletter; leave Soul-Patrol flyers to pass out, and most importantly to learn more about their businesses. Of course some of these folks didn't have email addresses yet, citing that most oft used excuse "I'm too busy to mess around with a computer". However I cut these folks NO SLACK and explained how they needed to reallocate their time, because they were losing money by not somehow finding the time to get involved.

Some laughed at me of course, however most were intrigued and wanted to know more. I took their information and will follow up via telephone. Of course they were intrigued by what I was doing and were especially interested in the collection of press passes I wore around my neck from past events such as the RRHOF, Atlantic City Funk Festival, Chi-Lites, Mandrill, various music festivals, etc. One lady said to me...I dunno who you are but you must have some kind of juice mister.

Once the festival got under way a number of Philly Soul-Patrolers stopped by the booth including one man as it turned out was a regular listener to Soul-Patrol Net Radio. He heard "Nightrains" voice and recognizes it, said that he was a "stone cold funkateer" and wanted to know when Soul-Patrol Radio was going to be available for his car, because his wife was sick of him listening to it in the house. Naturally this made me smile.

Eddie Bowman Oladoue Bolden & "Nightrain" were once again in the booth engaging folks in conversation and doing some interviews which will be broadcast on Soul-Patrol.Net Radio. Later in the day "The One Sun Lion Ra" and Habibah from the Mandrill Family) came by and worked the booth resulting in us selling a whole bunch of Mandrill CDs and that was certainly no surprise. Philly really is "Mandrill territory" and folks who came by, were really excited by their presence in our booth.

Overall this experience was a good one for me. I got to meet a whole bunch of interesting people from all over Philadelphia and engage them in a direct conversation about music & culture. I also got to meet a whole bunch of Soul-Patrollers in Philly, who I had previously only known by their email address and of course a whole bunch who knew me, but I didn't know them.

Some folks were surprised at our attitude towards the "mainstream" but again once they heard the music we were playing on Soul-Patrol.Net wanted to understand why they couldn't hear the music on the knee-gro radio stations in town and why they couldn't get the music at the mainstream record stores. My lesson here is that getting folks to understand these often complex issues really is best done "one person at a time".

Most importantly was the overall vibe that was created by the organizer of the festival, Mark Gaines and his staff.

I want to thank them for the opportunity to participate and help to educate the community on just what the current state of Black music is and how they can become involved in securing its future in a proactive manner. People really are disgusted with Clear Channel Radio In Philadelphia (WDAS/Power 99) and were certainly glad to see that an entity like Soul-Patrol exist, not so much as an alternative, but as a "conduit for music/culture that is excluded from the mainstream".

We will certainly hook up with these folks again going forward on more projects in the future. Stay tuned to Soul-Patrol.Net Radio for interviews and more from the festival...

Introducing: Unified Tribe - "FUNKtional Family"

Unified Tribe I have been waiting a long time for this moment. I have wanted the opportunity to formally introduce Soul-Patrollers to one of my guilty pleasures for the past few years and it couldn't have come a moment too soon...

All year long I have been wondering, what happened to that "bastard genre" called THA FUNK???
Usually each year there is a large volume of new funk albums that come out. For some reason this year has been different. It's almost been like a barren desert.

I was starting to get concerned. Because those of you who know me, know that I need mah FUNK, just as bad as a junkie needs his methadone. In fact I was almost tempted to pull out some of my scratched up records from the 1970's just to hear some of THA FUNK.

Unified Tribe - FUNKtional Family
http://www.unifiedtribe.net

Of course Unified Tribe isn't really new to Soul-Patrol, you may have heard some of their music on Soul-Patrol.Net Radio for the past few years across multiple broadcasts. Fast jams and slow jams. Unified Tribe is in many ways a real "throwback" to the old days. That's because they know that ALL of the great funk bands of the past not only knew how to party hearty, but also could throw down with some nasty azz slow jams as well. However at the same time, they don't sound "old fashioned". They have brought THA FUNK into the 21st century and the arrival of their NEW ALBUM called: FUNKtional Family. (plus they got HORNS!!!)

Not only does Unified Tribe have their musical chops down, but they even take things a step further, by reminding us that THA FUNK is indeed supposed to be "music for the head". They have a philosophical perspective, that is not unlike that of Sly and the Family Stone and they aren't ashamed of it. In fact they are proud of it and they want the world to know it, starting with their name. They are indeed a 2006 manifestation of the very same
"everyday people" that Sly Stone taught us about almost 40 years ago.

As such, they are a perfect fit for what we are trying to accomplish here on Soul-Patrol on multiple levels. So now I am proud of their new album FUNKtional Family and I am proud to be able to to let you all know that Unified Tribe is now officially one of
Soul-Patrol's Sponsors. That means you will see them on the Soul-Patrol Newsletter, Soul-Patrol.Net Radio and other places around the site (as often as I can.....lol). When you see them here or anyplace around the internet, go ahead and click on the links. The band is quite internet savvy and is always updating their website with news and updates.

Here is some additional background on them, taken from their website. Take a look and then go to the website of UNIFIED TRIBE, drop them a note and say hello.
They are good people and you should get to know them...

Unified Tribe - FUNKtional Family
http://www.unifiedtribe.net

Unified Tribe is an Austin-based band with New York and L.A. roots. With 12 principal members, they are a throwback in both size and sound to the days of big bands like Earth, Wind and Fire and Sly and The Family Stone.

Its the true musicality of their records that first draws in most fans. Its an element that is missing from so many industry-formulated artists these days. The Tribe is anything but industry-formulated. With a core thats been together for almost 24 years, theyve grown up together and its on top of their strong relationships that they build strong music. Their parent production company, Magic Muzik Productions, Inc., which consists entirely of the band, has produced and worked with such RnB and Jazz veterans as Earth, Wind and Fire, The Whispers, The Manhattans, Phil Perry, The Rippingtons and others. Though the group has received some of their biggest musical breaks through production, concerts are where they really shine.

Fans and industry aficionados alike often comment on the live show as far surpassing any expectations (however high) set by the albums. Their shows are as visual as they are aural, with dancing, great inter-member interaction, audience participation, and musicians constantly switching instruments. You have to see it three or four times just to integrate it all.

- Marlon Saunders
- Wade O. Brown
- Louise Perryman
- SounDoctrine

And they were featured on the following Soul-Patrol.Net broadcast:

A few of yall will remember meeting and making friends with SounDoctrine drummer JereB at the 2004 Soul-Patrol East Coast Convention when he came from Youngstown Ohio to accept the award on behalf of his fellow band mates. If you go to SounDoctrine's web site you will see a whole bunch of pictures that JereB took from the 2004 Soul-Patrol East Coast Convention. It was an award that he was truly proud to accept. In the days and weeks that followed he told me so many times how it made him feel to have met all of the good folks from Soul-Patrol in the flesh who were so willing to support an UNKNOWN INDEPENDENT ARTIST from Youngstown, Ohio.

In the meanwhile SounDoctrine has been appearing at concerts, radio/TV shows all around the country FUNKIN UP THE UNITED STATES with a JAZZ GROOVE and as one of the FIRST "INDY ARTISTS" to use the internet & multimedia technology in a smart/pro active manner as a constructive tool to not only advance the band, but also to spread their POSITIVE MESSAGE to all that they encounter!!

In fact they have a GREAT monthly newsletter that everyone here should subscribe to. Not only does it contain information/updates about SounDoctrine's activities, but also reports on other good things happening in Black music/culture around the internet. For example Soul-Patrol and the artists who are members (ex: RioSoul, Marlon Saunders, Billy Paul, etc) have been featured in SounDoctrine's Newsletter many times over the years.

Subscribe to SounDoctrine's excellent Online Newsletter at the following link:
http://www.soundoctrine.com

I know that some of yall (myself included) have attended a SounDoctrine concert and reported hearing them them THROW DOWN live and in "LIVING COLOR". And by nature of just the kind of people they are, we have observed the members of SounDoctrine showing up at Soul-Patrol events in support of other artists who are SP members. That's important to me because my feeling is that a key component of the "independent soul movement" being successful is for....

THE ARTISTS TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER.

:::: Fast forward to May/2006:::
