Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

Mike Calhoun is one of those kind of artists that we have known for a very long time, yet it seems like we know little about him at all. Of course we all know Mike's name from reading the back of all those Dazz Band album covers back in the day. However like many other members of a group we knew little about Mike Calhoun the artist.

I first met Mike Calhoun, back in the summer of 2007, when he submitted his new album "In Blue" for a review. I was knocked out by the album the very first time that I heard it and immediately called him to tell him just how much I liked it. Anyone who knows me would know why I dug the album so much. It's a very strong and a very diverse album that covers many different Black music styles and covers them well. To be honest, it was the last thing that I expected from a former member of the Dazz Band. I had expected "In Blue" to sound something like "refried Dazz Band." Instead I was quite surprised with an extremely progressive and forward looking album.

However that isn't the most important thing that yall need to know about Mike Calhoun. The most important thing that you need to know is that Mike is a "real person" and he is a person who cares. Mike calls me once or twice/week, just to ask how I am doing, how Soul-Patrol is doing, is there anything that he can do to help the site.

What a refreshing concept in 2008.
To actually care about another human being that you have never met in person.

Wanna know what "old school" means?

(that's what it means….)

Mike came to me in the late summer and asked if he could submit a song for the Soul-Patrol Digital/Virtual Album. The song was called "GOD'S GOT MY BACK" a slammin Funk/Rap/Gospel joint. 90.9% of the folks, who "pre-ordered" the album, rated the song "excellent." This song is slated to be the lead song on Mike's upcoming album.

I could go on about Mike Calhoun, but I'm not going to. Instead I would simply like for you to do one of two things:

1. Listen to this album "In Blue", in it's entirety via Soul-Patrol.Net Radio
http://www.soul-patrol.net/calzone_inblue.ram

2. Take a few moments to visit Mike's MySpace page at the following link and learn a little bit more about him.

Thanks in advance...

BIO - Mike Calhoun

Mike Calhoun - BioMike Calhoun, a versatile songwriter and guitar player was influenced by many stellar rock guitar players that came out of the late sixties/early seventies such as Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Phil Keaggy (Glass Harp) and Joe Walsh (James Gang). This musical influence equipped Mike Calhoun to be a founding father of the Grammy Award-Winning Dazz Band.

The group's unique blend of R&B, Jazz, Pop and Funk dazzled audiences across the country from 1978 to 1987. Originally Kinsman Dazz signed with Twentieth Century Fox Records where Mike was mentored by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Phillip Bailey (Earth Wind & Fire). The Group eventually moved to Motown Records where Mike had the experience of working with Stevie Wonder and other great talents that were part of the Motown stable. While Mike's guitar playing has always stood out, he was also one of the primary songwriters for the Dazz Band. He wrote hits like "Invitation to Love", co-wrote "Knock Knock", "Shake it Up" and "Freaky Loving" and continued to pump out quality material over the years.

Mike Calhoun left the Dazz Band before their breakup to sign with MCA Records but was still being managed by Joe Simone (Dazz Band's manager) until Joe's death. In 1985 Joe Bendo, Tim LaRose and George Cappellini helped Mike sign a deal along with lead singer Juan Lively forming the group Voyeur. Michael & Ike Wiley (from the Dazz Band) joined him on the album. When Juan fell ill, the contract ended after one album.

Mike Calhoun did return to the Dazz Band for one more album "Joy Stick and then went on to tour with the group Identity which was a reggae band signed with Mango Island Records. Mike toured with Identity for three years.

Mike Calhoun returned to Cleveland in 1992 to write and help produce an album for Cozette Morgan (R&B, Pop) that got rave reviews in Europe and Asia. In 1997, Mike then toured with The Travis Haddix Blues Band for two years.

Mike Calhoun was presented with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Platinum Membership in 1994 at the opening of the facility and played in the "Allstar" band formed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the "topping off" ceremony. He was awarded for his song writing & playing with the Dazz Band.

Mike Calhoun left Cleveland and was showcased in a club in Louisville, Ky. owned by Jerry Green. He was inspired during this time to start his own band. So in 2002 he returned back to Cleveland where he wrote and produced his first solo CD "In Blue" "In Blue" is an electric project with elements of rock, funk, rap, jazz, blues and even a few gospel tunes that give tribute to his spiritual roots. "In Blue" was released on Little Fish Records (Larry Koval, CEO) in 2007. He was also featured on Soul-Patrol's historic album that also has appearances by Public Enemy, the Dells and Chico Hamilton. Bob Davis (CEO of Soul-Patrol) calls Mike a funk pioneer.

In 2007 Mike Calhoun co-produced the hip-hop/rock album "My Animal Self" by up and coming Cleveland artist E&J. Mike is also working on the hip-hop album "Father& Son" with his son Malik. Mike is currently working on an Inspirational project that will be released in 2008 and he can currently be heard every Sunday night playing lead guitar in the Reggae Funk Hip Hop Band, The Flex Crew. With the help of Mike they are recording a new album to be released this year. Mike Calhoun has plans on working with his cousin, Will Calhoun of Living Colour on a special project in the near future.

ALBUM REVIEW - Mike Calzone/Calhoun - "In Blue"

Mike Calzone - In BlueAs a card carrying member of the Black Rock Coalition this album was the last thing I expected from Mike Calzone/Calhoun, the former guitarist of the classic 70's - 80's disco/funk Dazz band. First of all, this album is organized like an LP, it's got a "side one" and a "side two".

Side "one" is called "old school/soul school and sounds like a combination of STAX/TK Records/Ohio Players with just a touch of blues, disco, slow jams & funk. Side "two" is called "new school/rock school" and it sounds like Living Colour meets Whoodini meets Journey meets the Eagles meets Santana.

If all of this sounds like a "mess", it isn't. In fact it all sounds quite visionary and diverse to my ears and contains many standout tunes representing many different musical styles that fall under the umbrella of Black music. Mike Calzone/Calhoun has a vision for Black music that is not unlike that of Soul-Patrol.com itself. He understands that Black music isn't what "they" say it's supposed to be, it's what "we" say it is. That is an unusual and courageous perspective to take in the "cookie cutter world of 2007".

However it is the correct perspective to take if one wants to create a timeless collection of music that will stand on it's own artistic value many years from now, instead of being used as a coaster (or worse yet an actual "cookie cutter"). This album is highly recommended.

BLACK HISTORY - About The Kinsman Dazz Band

BLACK HISTORY - About The Kinsman Dazz Band The Dazz Band was a funk music band based in Cleveland, Ohio that enjoyed brief popularity in the United States in the early 1980s. The name of the band is a concatenation of "Danceable Jazz". The group's hits included the songs "Let it Whip" and "Joystick".

The Dazz Band grew out of fusion group Telefunk, which comprised {MIKE CALHOUN} Bobby Harris, Isaac "Ike" Wiley, Jr., his brother Michael Wiley, and Kenny Pettus. Telefunk eventually became {Kinsman} Dazz}, named after the street in Cleveland where Harris had grown up. The group changed its name before the unrelated song 'Dazz' became an R&B hit for Brick in 1976. {Kinsman Dazz} was signed to {20th Century Records} by Joe Lewis. The group went to Los Angeles to record for producer Marvin Gaye. Owing to illness, Gaye had to back out of the duties. Harris requested and got {Philip Bailey}, the vocalist of {Earth, Wind & Fire}, to produce the group's first album, {Kinsman Dazz}. Bailey would co-produce the second album, Dazz, and had a major input into the group's vocal arrangements.

The {Kinsman Dazz} became the Dazz Band in 1980. Separately, the 20th Century Records label was closed, and the Dazz Band was signed to Motown. The group expanded from the original quartet - Harris, Pettus, and the Wiley brothers - with newcomers Kevin Frederick, Steve Cox, Eric Fearman, Pierre DeMudd, and Sennie "Skip" Martin. Martin was vocalist for almost all the Dazz Band hits. Dazz's first album for Motown was Invitation to Love, a self-produced set. The group's next album, Let The Music Play, featured the minor hit single "Knock! Knock!". The group's breakthrough came with Keep It Live (1982) containing the hit "{Let It Whip}" which reached #5 on the R&B charts and won a {Grammy Award} for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocalsand was also redone by Boyz ll Men in 2004 . They would go on to score R&B hits with 'Swoop (I'm Yours)', 'Joystick', 'Let It All Blow', and 'Party Right Here'. After Keep It Live, Dazz Band recorded On the One, Joystick, Jukebox and Hot Spot, all for Motown. The band was known for its live performances, often proving more popular than the headlining act.

In, 1985 Fearman and Frederick left the group, and were replaced by Marlon McClain and Keith Harrison. In 1986, Dazz Band recorded Wild & Free under the Geffen label, and moved to RCA shortly later. The group's commercial success was now over, and Skip Martin left to join Kool & The Gang after original lead man James "JT" Taylor left the group for a solo career. The band continues to tour. In October 2004 Let It Whip appeared in popular videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on Funk radio station Bounce FM.
