Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter
Terry Callier, Sandy or the Election?
Terry Callier passed away this week. Now I fully realize that for many of you out there you might very well think that Soul-Patrol.com might have some "bigger fish to fry," this week, between Hurricane Sandy (I was right in it's path here in S. Jersey, and only had power/internet access restored just a few hours ago) & the upcoming 2012 Presidential election (I've got some commentary that will make a few of you quite angry coming later this week)?
Well you might be right, however we got some very tasty and well seasoned fish, with respect to the legacy of Terry Callier, that yall need to taste right now and it's being provided by our friend and super producer (Norah Jones, Brooklyn Funk Essentials/Stephanie McKay, Omar, Cassandra Wilson, Monday Michiru, Randy Weston, Terry Callier, Ronny Jordan, Gregory Porter, Lizz Wright, The Manhattan Transfer, Richie Havens, Gordon Chambers and more...) Mr. Brian Bacchus (http://www.linkedin.com/in/soulfeastmusic)
Take a look below about what Brian has to say about the passing of Terry Callier. I would also like you to take a look at this previously un-released video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykfcEmh1dfw) that Brian did with Terry Callier and please do consider just what might have been...
IMHO, Terry Callier is just about the most important artist that Soul-Patrol.com could discuss at this moment in time. That's because Terry Callier is someone who simply refused to allow himself to be defined by the "status quo." (And that my friends, isn't always the easiest thing to do....)
RIP: Terry Callier
Terry Callier, the writer of The Love We Have Stays On Mind, Occasional
Rain and co-founder of the psychedelic soul group, Rotary Connection,
dead at 67.
2012 has been a cruel year for me, Terry being the most recent loss.
I produced two recordings with him as you know, TimePeace being his 'return' of sorts, after over 13 years of not recording. I'm at a loss for the right words for a beautiful brother, a very peaceful brother and also a social troubadour and truth sayer of the highest order. He always had something important to say in his songs, be it about social conditions, love or the wonder and frailties of humanity.
And he was a true organic mix of the complete Black American music experience. I spent many hours with him talking about folk singers like Fred Neil, Odetta & Julius Lester, soul singers and groups like Curtis,Jerry Butler (he was part of Jerry Song Workshop in Chicago) and the Dells (there is a Dells recording of just Terry's music) and of course jazz musicians and singers like Coltrane, McCoy, Miles, Billie and Wayne.
He embodied them all musically and did it without contrivance. We also talked plenty about Charles Stepney as producer, arranger and even recording engineer. Terry saw and heard it all and then distilled down a sound and a message that still resonates today and I know will be meaningful for the many generations to come. Listening to Java Sparrow, Lazarus Man and then TimePeace from that same titled album after I heard the news, his spirit came back and helped me come to terms with his loss. He's laid down a road map for all of us to follow, not just musicians, but all of us. I feel blessed to have had Terry Callier be a part of my own musical history. His voice, both it's sound and it's message, will be sorely missed. Hopefully younger audiences will grasp his importance and spread his legacy, and of course build upon it. As he would often end our conversations, Insha' Allah.
