Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

Since Black People Dont Buy Books, Why Do We Need Black Authors? (Why are Black Promoters excluded?)

PRESS RELEASE: Lakewood, NJ: Thanksgiving Smooth Jazz Explosion Najee/Oil Silk (11/29) & Maysa/Marion Meadows (11/30) @ The Lake Terrace Ballroom

Ok.....now I want to ask a question.....

DO YOU REGARD THE ABOVE STATEMENT TO BE ABSURD?"

I want to do two things in this issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter:

First - I want to let you know that the notion of a "Black Promoter" (Or any other "Black Owned Business) is not dead & done in 2013.

Second - I want to turn you on to a great package of live performances that you should consider checking out this weekend if you are in the NJ/Philly/NYC area.

First lets deal with the statement. Of course it is absurd. However it is also a perception that drive the reality for some people.

The late/great Black author, Ralph Wiley (one of my personal literary heroes) was told this by an editor at a book publishing company, early in his career. Ralph said that the editor was basicly trying to tell him that he should abandon any thoughts of having a career as a writer, implying that "if Black people won't buy anything that you write, then certainly no white person will either, go get a job as a truck driver."

Ironicly Ralph later titled one of his books; "Why Black People Don't Buy Books."

The same perception holds true for "Black Promoters."

I want to introduce you to a longtime member of Soul-Patrol named Jimmy Coefield. I've known Jimmy for about 10 years. When I first met him he contacted me to tell me about his dream. He told me that he had a dream to bring top quality Black entertainment to a part of New Jersey, not known for such. He wanted to bring Jazz & Soul artists to an area right in the middle of NYC/Philly/Atlantic City. And he wanted to present shows in a classy environment that one would expect to find in either NYC/Philly/Atlantic City. He told me about a venue that he was trying to secure in Lakewood New Jersey to present these events.

The fact that Jimmy is a "Black Promoter," shouldn't make any difference. But it does. Just like it did for Ralph Wiley.

So am I suggesting that you should support Jimmy Coefield's dream, just because he is Black? Of course not, that would be wrong. However what I am suggesting is that you NOT exclude the Jimmy Coefield's of the world from your thinking & consideration because he is Black.

Second lets deal with the shows. Lakewood, NJ: Thanksgiving Smooth Jazz Explosion Najee/Oil Silk (11/29) & Maysa/Marion Meadows (11/30) @ The Lake Terrace Ballroom.

--Lakewood, New Jersey is about a 1hour (&change) ride fron NY, Philly or Atlantic City. It is situated in an integrated and relatively safe suburban environment.

--It features major artists that we have profiled here on Soul-Patrol many times over the years.

--It's happening over two evenings, during a holiday weekend, when you should have time to go.

--And it's at a great venue.

What's YOUR excuse for NOT attending?
