Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

A lotta talk about jazz, what it should be, how it should be presented, how we can get younger people involved, etc. Folks, this really isn't too hard to figure out as I was reminded by a site visitor. Sometimes the answers to how the future will unfold are found in the past....
-----------------------

A friend of mine forwarded the Soul Patrol web page to review your article & letter written by Charles Wright & I then scrolled through the Soul Patrol Jazz page. When I saw your references to NYC's jazz station - WRVR...... I had to laugh about the quality of that station's programming in contrast to what's being fed to listening audiences today as "Contemporary Jazz."

I was in my early teens -living out on Long Island & listening to the station the day it played its last jazz track - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" & then the DJ said - "are you ready for this??" Bam !!!! Country & Western music....at first I thought it was a joke because there were no announcements & then after the 3rd & 4'Th song I realized it was real & the jazz station was gone....

Anyway, I now live in California (L.A. area) and tell people about the quality and variety of artists & styles of jazz that were played in a 1 hour slot on that station back in the day. Seeing your comments supported by strong feelings that all that good stuff has been forgotten is gone from the airways.

Thanks for taking me back.....

This person said a mouthful. Right now a whole lotta folks in NYC are lamenting the change in format of their local "smooth jazz" radio station. To those folks I would say that "smooth jazz" will eventually be back on the air in NYC, but in the meanwhile, why not look at this as a break in the action and take some time to listen to REAL JAZZ?

And we have some for you, just in time for Black History Month from our friends at VERVE (in partnership with Amazon.com), the legendary Jazz label. It's a special collection of over TWENTY REISSUES from the classic period of the 1960's and the 1970's. It features GREAT ALBUMS (w/original artwork) from artists like: Duke Ellington, Roy Ayers, Billie Holiday, George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Smith, Stanley Clarke, Gil Evans, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins, Gato Barbieri, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Hartman, Oliver Nelson, Ramsey Lewis, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson.

Click on the links and give it a shot, share this music with your children and give them a piece of history!!!

Thanks in advance...
