Album Review: Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul
(Classic Soul)

Album Review: Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul OTIS BLUE: OTIS REDDING SINGS SOUL----THE COLLECTORS EDITION is an expanded package of Otis Redding's 3rd Album done back in 1965. It's a 2 CD set containing the original Mono and the original Stereo mixes. These two versions ALONE would be worth having as a "Collector" of the music timeline of the development of Soul on the American Pop Music scene. HOWEVER.....this package goes NOT "A" step further....NOT 2 steps further.....but....a THIRD and a FOURTH step further!!!!!

We have all gotten used to the "Bonus Tracks" on these re-releases. That's just that "A" step further. "I'M DEPENDING ON YOU"("B" side to "I've Been Loving You Too Long") and "ANY OLE WAY"( "B" side to "Satisfaction") serve as the "Bonus Track" we are accustomed to that weren't a part of the Original release. What they have done as a "Second" step further is doing a Mono Mix of the Stereo versions of "I've Been Loving You To Long", "Respect" and "Ole Man Trouble". They have also a 1967 version of "Respect" and a recorded Mono Mix Live version of "Shake". That's the Second step. Now the value of these are relative to what your "ears" perceive as "quality". The good news is they are ALL done very well. If you're of the persnickety or you are "techno-savvy" and convert these tracks to your mobile vehicle of choice, iPod or MP3 Player, you have choices of Mixes to convert (although converting this entire package to MP3 wouldn't be a bad thing).....Review continued here

Album Review: Renaissance - Meet Me on The Corner
(The Rebirth of Consciousness and the Revival of the Cool)

Click Here to get more info about Renaissance - Meet Me on The Corner This is such an incredible album of recorded music that I need to dispense with my normal review methodology and speak directly to the villains. If you are programming a doowop, classic soul or acoustic music radio station and you aren't playing some of this music on your show, then you should be shot. If you have a "specialty show" and you aren't simply playing the ENTIRE ALBUM FROM END TO END for your listeners, then you don't really deserve to own your testicles anymore .....review continued here

Concert Review: Brian Auger in Pittsburgh 3-22-2008
(Jazz/Funk)

Click Here to get more info about HoneyDripper Soundtrack It was a few weeks ago today that I saw Brian Auger perform at Moondog's here in Pittsburgh. The steam from the smoke caused at the club that night is finally staring to go away, thanks to some rain in the area.

I don't know how many of you have seen Brian and the Oblivion Express recently but don't pass up the chance to see them. The whole show is a journey through "Great Black Music". How that is possible many of you may ask for this White guy do do this?

The answer is plain and simple. Brian Auger is one of the giants of Jazz-Fusion. Like Joe Zawinul, he has the soul of a Black Man and is funkier than a mosquitoes tweeter.

Some of you have been following his music for over 30 years on the US recording scene. For over forty years, Brian Auger has been a musician's musician. Jazz pianist, bandleader, session man, Hammond B3 innovator, and key player in the rise of jazz/rock fusion, Brian has done it all and then some. (Review continued here...)

Ike Turner - R.I.P. - by Phil Arnold - artist administrator, manager, agent for Ike Turner 1999 - 2007

Ike Turner - R.I.P.

by Phil Arnold - artist administrator, manager, agent for Ike Turner 1999 - 2007

I have procrastinated commenting about his passing. In vain disbelief I refused to acknowledge the loss. It is as if I was trying to convince myself that the longer I waited, the less Ike Turner was dead. I was not alone in denial; nor was I alone in concealing my fears and suspicions about what caused his death. I often told him "it was a privilege to work with you, and even more of an honor to know you; and if you had been a blue-collar worker I would still be just as proud to know you." I knew Ike Turner, the man, as well as the myth.

After kicking his drug habit in jail, Ike stayed clean for about 16 years, which is a fact. He was proud of that. When he spoke at LA-area high schools in 2004-05 for "Blues Schools" his quote was "Stay in school, stay off drugs, don't make the same mistakes I did, respect yourself, and others will follow." He was not a hypocrite. After prison, Ike was noted for helping others turn away from drugs. The successes should remain anonymous - and so should the failures; you know who you are. Honor his sacrifice by helping yourself. Get help. He actually fell backward reaching out to help someone else.......Continued at the following link....http://www.soul-patrol.com/soul/iketurner.htm

Album Review: Lockboxx - Drop Shop
(Jazz/Funk)

Click Here to get more info about Lockboxx - Drop Shop Lockboxx is one of my very favorite groups on today's music scene. Oh you say that you have never heard of them? Well I wouldn't expect you to unless you have been doing the digital equivalent of "crate digging" like I have over on MySpace. Lockboxx was in fact one of the first artists I "discovered" via MySpace and they remain a favorite. I discovered them because of a super/erotic/super/hypnotic track they had playing on their MySpace page called "Rollerglow". The song "Rollerglow" occupies bthe space between Kool & the Gang's "Summer Madness", Donald Byrd's "Wind Parade" and Ronnie Laws "Tidal Wave" (how's that for 1970's Funk references). I found myself going back to their MySpace page nearly every day, just to hear "Rollerglow". Soon I got up the courage to send them an email requesting a copy of the song, so that I could play it on Soul-Patrol.Net. Steve Kray of Lockboxx was reluctant to give me a copy at first; telling me that it was "un-mastered" and I could have a copy once the album was finished. I "twisted" Steve's arm and he eventually sent me a copy of the song and it's still playing on one of our Funk shows. So now the album is finished and will be released sometime later this year. My recommendation is that is you are a fan of music like "Summer Madness", "Wind Parade" and "Tidal Wave", then you will find yourself hopelessly addicted to the album "Drop Shop" by Lockboxx. Oh there is more, there are tracks that remind me of Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra, Funkadelic and others. Within certain parameters the album is extremely diverse. This is exactly the type of album that would have come out on CTI or GRP years ago. I really like it a whole lot and the only suggestion that I have for these guys is that they get one of these extremely strong Neo Soul singers that has a crappy band to sing one or two songs (to add a "Jon Lucien/Flora Purim" vibe) on their next album and they will have a bonafide hit on their hands.

Album Review: The Sound of Philadelphia - Gamble and Huff’s Greatest Hits
(Classic Soul/Funk)

Click Here to get more info about The Sound of Philadelphia - Gamble and Huff’s Greatest Hits Sometimes I think that as music fans we get too sophisticated for our own good. Many people would see an album like this featuring: The O'Jays, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Patti LaBelle, The 3 Degrees, People's Choice, The Intruders and Billy Paul and pass it by, with the idea that either they already have these songs or that they have heard them all before. On one level they would be correct, however I do think that it's useful to be able to go back and listen to a compilation like this, because the whole is indeed larger than the sum of it's parts. And one of the things that makes it so is the contribution of MFSB underneath of it all (but more on them later).

Here is my track by track review...(continued here....)

Album Review: Teeny Tucker - Two Big M's
(Blues/Soul/Rock n' Roll)

Click Here to get more info about Teeny Tucker - Two Big Ms This is a fun album by Teeny Tucker, daughter of Tommy Tucker ("Hi HeelSneakers".) It's tribute album to Big Maybelle and Big Mama Thorton. You have heard all of these songs before and if you are a fan of either artist you will love the "Two Big M's". Big Mama Thornton is the originator of the classic song "Hound Dog", that most people think was an original tune by Elvis Presley. Big Mama Thorton was paid a flat $500.00 for "Hound Dog" and three years later Elvis Presley made it a hit and got paid millions. On the other hand, Big Maybelle was the original singer of "Whole Lotta Shaken Going On" and later made a hit by Jerry Lee Lewis. She also got paid pennies and died broke while Jerry Lee Lewis made millions. Big Mama Thornton was a songwriter in her own right. She wrote the classic song "Ball & Chain" which Janis Joplin made into hit. However if you are "culture bandit", you will want to skip the one original song on the album, the title track entitled "Two Big M's". I don't think that Teeny would mind me mentioning a portion of the lyrics:

"You were pioneers with a crossover style
Your presence and power would make folks bow
"Hound Dog", "Rockhouse" and all the great tunes were cool
They only became hits when someone stole them from you"

Overall this album is a powerful presentation of classic songs, originated by two Black women that today few Blacks know anything about whatsoever. However students of the history of Rock n' Roll know all about Big Maybelle and Big Mama Thorton, they know their history. http://www.teenytucker.com

Album Review: Gerald Alston - Sings Sam Cooke (Featuring Gerald Albright)
(Classic Soul)

Click Here to get more info about Gerald Alston - Sings Sam Cooke (Featuring Gerald Albright) I can recall having two very serious conversations with Gerald Alston. The first one took place at Cliff Perkins (Soul Generation) studio in Jersey City, NJ on a Sunday morning. It was a meeting/hang out session with several NYC area Classic Soul artists. That day Gerald got up and spoke with much eloquence about the need for the Classic Soul artists to unify and support each other, or else they would soon find themselves out of existence. The second one took place in Atlantic City, NJ. It was the day of the taping of one of those PBS specials. The Manhattans were performing on the special and after the rehearsal I hung out with Gerald and Blue, with the idea that I was going to interview the two of them. What started out as an interview really ended up being mostly a monologue, with Gerald Alston reminding me of what my responsibility was as the creator of Soul-Patrol and what it could possibly mean to Black artists like him, if only they could get themselves together.

I mention all of this simply because on a personal level these conversations serve as a backdrop to me in listening to the new release; Gerald Alston - Sings Sam Cooke (Featuring Gerald Albright). If you have ever seen Gerald Alston perform live, either solo or as the lead singer of the Manhattans, you already know that one of the highlights of the show is when Gerald comes out and does a cover version of the Sam Cooke classic "A Change is Gonna Come." Gerald never fails to bring the house down, often leaving audience members in tears, because of his ability to evoke the memory and spirit of Sam Cooke, while singing "A Change is Gonna Come." If you have ever seen Gerald Alston perform this song live, then you already know this to be a fact. However what you don't know is that Gerald Alston isn't just "channeling" Sam Cooke's singing voice, but he is also "channeling" the spirit of the things that Sam Cooke stood for as an artist and as a man...(review continued)
