Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

"Michael Manson and the Greening of America"

When we think of the term "greening of America", one of the first things that comes to mind, is generally not Black music. However my feeling is that Black music can actually do quite a bit to contribute to the "greening of America." In todays world we are bombarded with so much "noise polution", that it makes our complicated lives even more complicated than it need be. Although many would actually blame Black music as the cause of much of the existing noise polution we have, I would suggest that those folks might just want to examine the "other side of the coin."

And if you are willing to explore and open up your mind just a little bit, a good place to start deleting some of the "noise polution" surrounding you, just might be found in the music contained on the new release from Michael Manson entitled "UP FRONT." In this issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter we will examine both the music and the artist. We invite you to click on the various links that we have provided to check out the website of Michael Manson. But most of all we want you to relax by listening to some of his music on a special broadcast by our own Kevin Amos (funkoverlord) at the following link: http://www.soul-patrol.net/manson.ram

Press Release - Bassist Michael Manson Signs with Nu Groove for his Up Front Release

Michael Manson has teamed up with recording industry veteran David Chackler to release Up Front on Chackler's Nu Groove label. Nu Groove has recently created an industry buzz with R&R charting releases featuring some of the hottest contemporary jazz talent of today.

"I'm really excited about this release. Manson is a dynamic player and one of the most electrifying soloists in contemporary jazz. We're confident that the incredible R&B grooves in Up Front will expose Michael to an even wider audience," said Chackler.

About the artist:

A native of Chicago, IL, Michael Manson joined City Lights and began performing regularly on Chicago's jazz circuit in the late 80s. In the mid-90s, Manson joined Brian Culbertson in support of the City Lights CD (Long Night Out) and continued to play the Chicago jazz scene with band mate Steve Cole. An invitation to play the Montreux Casino Lights Festival in 1999 would put Manson on the road to national fame. Sharing the stage with the likes of Boney James, George Duke and Kirk Whalum at this festival led to connections that blossomed into a spot performing on the Montreux Jazz Tour. Since that time, the bassist has rapidly emerged as one of the new stars of contemporary jazz displaying his remarkable dexterity and command of the 5-string and piccolo basses.

Michael displays his remarkable gift of musical versatility, passion and precision both in concert and on recordings. As a producer/composer he penned his first Top 10 hit "Outer Drive," followed by the R&R charting track "Just Feelin' It" and most recently, the Top 20 "Coming Right At Ya." With both unrelenting power and laid-back grace recording artists' third CD entitled Up Front went on sale January 22nd and was released under the quickly expanding Nu Groove Records label. Guest artists on the new CD include; Norman Brown, Steve Cole, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Jeff Lorber, Najee and Paul Jackson Jr.

Regarding the release of Up Front, Manson said, "In the making Up Front were moments of great joy, extreme focus, and some very exciting performances. We've taken some artistic license and "jammed" a little more on this project. I've made some new friends who have shared their gifts and old friends who chimed in as well. I'm very excited to share this with the people who love music. Enjoy."

Michael Manson is managed and booked by C Sharp Consulting, Ltd. www.csharpconsulting.com

"I wish I could turn on the radio today and find a station that can guarantee all their music will sound as good as Michael Manson's "

Album Review - Michael Manson - Up Front

Album Review - Michael Manson - Up FrontThe album "Up Front" by Michael Manson, is truly "music for our time." Although it certainly appears that we are going to be immersed in a gasoline crisis for quite a while and purchasing gasoline is going to become more and more painful in the coming weeks and months, this album is what we used to call "cruzin music. " Perhaps we will never again as Americans ever just mindlessly drive around in our cars just for the fun of it, enjoying the scenery of the urban, suburban and rural landscape as we once did? However as we all know; "where there is a silver cloud, there is a lining" and Michael Manson gives Black music fans the perfect back drop for "going green'"

Over the next few months, as we learn to ride our bicycles to work, jog in the park and walk to the grocery store while our automobiles sit quietly in their parking spots, we can take some solace from the music that Michael Manson has produced for us with the album "Up Front."

Some might be tempted to call this album "jazz", but I wouldn't. This is instrumental R&B music, or what "The BlackByrds" (remember them?) called "Happy Music", way back when. It's not designed to 'expand your mind", it's designed to "free your mind" and goodness knows that with all of the problems facing us as we walk out the door each day (that is if we have a door to walk out of?) , we need any type of freedom that we can find. Music like this for many people will be able to provide such freedom, a coping mechanism if you will. So as you strap on your bicycle helmet, throw up that kickstand and put in your earbuds, you just may want to have some of these songs loaded up in your iPod (or perhaps less expensive mp3 player). You will need music like this to help you to forget about the pain. After all, who wants to go thru a fit of "road rage", on a bicycle?

Assisted by the likes of Norman Brown, Steve Cole, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Jeff Lorber, Najee and Paul Jackson Jr, here is the track listing for Michael Manson's "Up Front"

1 Bring It On
2 Coming Right At Ya
3 Steppin' Out
4 She's Always There (For Lana)
5 End Of The Road
6 It's The Way She Moves
7 Outer Drive
8 Still Thinkiing About You
9 Up Front
10 Way Back When
11 Lovely Day
12 End Of The Road (Reprise)
13 Outer Drive (Reprise)

BIO: Michael Manson

BIO: Michael MansonFor Michael Manson the bottom line has always been great music. Since he first picked up a guitar (not a bass), he has moved persistently from strength to strength, one association leading inevitably to another in a career that has brought him front and center with the most esteemed names in jazz, gospel, R&B, rock and pop.

Manson's uniquely lyrical voice has its roots in Chicago, Illinois. He recalls, "My grandmother and mother played piano, but no one else in the family was really involved in music. My dad had an old beat-up folk guitar that he never picked up and so my older brother and I got interested in music about the same time-I was fourteen-and started playing it. After that, we bugged my mom to buy us some instruments. She finally bought my brother a guitar and me a $25.00 bass and a $25.00 amp that we shared".

Returning to Chicago State University, he joined the Chicago State Gospel Choir and, in Manson's words, "things started snowballing." One gig or association would lead to another, with Manson playing with one Gospel great after another: Tramaine Hawkins, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Jessy Dixon and James Cleveland. He even played on the Winans album All Out, only the first of many times he would perform with childhood musical heroes.

After his graduation from Chicago State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, he went on to complete a Masters in Music Performance at Northwestern University. In 1995 Manson met Steve Finkle (now Steve Cole) who was playing with Brian Culbertson. Soon Manson was playing the Chicago club circuit and touring in support of Culbertson's City Lights. Manson went on to record selections on Brianís After Hours in '97. That same year, one of his gospel connections put him together with Kirk Whalum, and he ended up playing on the Dove and Stellar-Award nominated "The Gospel According To Jazz." Recorded live at the Roy Acuff theatre, it featured Whalum, George Duke and Paul Jackson Jr. "That's how I met George Duke in '97," quips Manson.

Manson's association with George Duke ultimately led to the gig of a lifetime. George, who was the musical director and a featured artist on the Montreux Jazz tour (summer of 2000), invited Manson onboard, where he shared the stage with his greatest childhood hero, Al Jarreau, along with David Sanborn, Roberta Flack and Joe Sample. Pal Kirk Whalum said with typical good humor, "After that tour you could have retired." But Manson is just getting started. Through Kirk, he met Larry Carlton and toured with him before and after his chart-topping Fingerprints album. Kirk also included him on his "Hymns In The Garden" album that garnered a nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album at this years Grammys. Manson has shared the stage with Warner Bros. Records artists Larry Carlton, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Rick Braun, Kenny Garret, George Duke and Kevin Mahogany. Other Warner artists featured on the album included Fourplay (with bassist Nathan East), Bob James and Gabriel Anders. Released in October of 2000 to critical acclaim, it is being followed by a DVD release in 2001.

For Michael Manson, love of musical communication, exploration, collaboration and celebration is clearly what itís all about. This sophomore release reflects Mansonís unabating passion with joy and inspired artistry, ďThere are musical conversations that are intriguing and I hope the audience shares in that. But it is just great for musicians to communicate in thai way. Thatís the joy of music. To make great music like that every night, thatís what itís all about.Ē
