Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

Introducing Donnie C...

PROFILE/CONCERT REVIEW: Donnie C In today's world of music it often feels like we don't really have time to check out new artists. Some of that is partially due to the brainwashing effects of commercial radio and television, where the whole notion of "if you haven't heard of them before (on commercial radio/television) than that artist isn't any good. Some of it is because in our fast pasced society we don't allow ourselves the time to sit back and indulge ourselves in the idea of music discovery. We tend to want to let other people do that for us.

Donnie C is an emerging artist that I have found myself willing to take the time to understand his artistic vision and the implementation of it. I have been immersed in listening to his album over the past year as he has completed various stages of it, and I am glad that I did

We have a review of the album (highly reccomended) along with an internet radio broadcast, hosted by "nightrain" with an intro from our friends Joe Jackson & the Jackson Five. And if there is ANYONE who is the master of "introducing a new artist", it's Joe Jackson!!!

Take a listen and let us know what cha think?

Thanks in advance...

ALBUM REVIEW: Donnie C - New Moment, New Choice (imagine if Ronnie Dyson were here?)

Donnie C - New Moment, New ChoiceI wonder if anyone here can remember an artist named Ronnie Dyson? Ronnie Dyson was first introduced to the world as a part of the original cast of the Broadway musical "Hair." He would later go on to have a moderately successful career as an R&B/Pop singer in the 1970's. Ronnie Dyson's biggest hit song is one that you might know of, it's called "(If You Let Me Make Love To You Then) Why Can't I Touch You?" and it reached #8 on the Billboard Pop chart in 1970. If you can remember what the extremely talented Ronnie Dyson sounded like, I would like you to keep him in mind as you are reading this review of Donnie C's new album called "New Moment, New Choice." And if you never heard of Ronnie Dyson, then "you betta axe somebody, cuz he was badd.

I first became aware of Ronnie Dyson before he was even on Broadway. Back in the 1960's all of the telethons were broadcast out of NYC and one of the best things about watching them was that they were showcases for local talent to appear on TV. I can remember Ronnie Dyson being on damn near every telethon every year, and being on multiple years.

In today's world of musical mediocrity there are no nationally televised telethons for extremely talented artists like Donnie C, to make an impact. To make matters even worse, he specifically refers to himself and his outstanding music by using the currently politically incorrect term "Neo Soul." Compounding this handicap is the fact that his name "Donnie" is not only the same as the (perhaps?) overhyped Atlanta based "Neo Soul" artist who simply refers to himself as "Donnie", but also the same as the "patron saint of neo soul", Donnie Hathaway.

I'm here to let you know that you shouldn't pay any attention whatsoever to any of that. The best thing for you to do is to travel on over to Donnie C's MySpace page (myspace.com/donniecsoul) and take a listen to some of the music he's got playing over there. He is an extremely gifted songwriter, who sings about the problems/opportunities of an uncertain/unforgiving world with a powerful voice that reminds us that despite the perils of our daily existence, we in fact do have the resources within us to navigate thru those troubled waters.

If you go to Donnie C's MySpace page (myspace.com/donniecsoul), you will hear three outstanding songs (Happiness is Just a Step Away, You've Got a Friend, Season To Shine), that represent the tip of the iceberg of what is contained on the album. Of course you will be drawn first to his cover of Donnie Hathaway's "You've Got a Friend" and you will be satisfied that this young man can handle the material of of one of the masters. However when you hear him sing the self penned "Happiness is Just a Step Away", one is blown away in a manner that will indeed remind you of the sensuous yearning in Marvin Gaye's "Distant Lover."

After hearing those two songs of course you are going to want more and to get that you are going to have to go beyond the MySpace page and listen to the actual album that these songs come from.

When you arrive there and start listening, you will discover why I asked you to keep the voice of Ronnie Dyson, not far the memory of your ears. The album's second song, entitled "Hold Me, A Little Closer" has the same vibe as "(If You Let Me Make Love To You Then) Why Can't I Touch You?." Not that it sounds like a record released in 1970, it's defiantly got that 2009 "neo soul vibe", however it's powerful lyrics will elicit the same type of powerful "yearning" that Ronnie Dyson's song did 40 years ago. Oh and on track #5 entitled "On My Way", Donnie C is singing just like one of them street corner "I Ain't Got No Band" people and you can really hear just how powerful his voice is. This cat can really b.l.o.w just like a doo wopper. I'm going to stop now. I like every song on this album and now my fingers are tired of typing.

I have used the word "yearning" at least twice so far in this review and there is good reason for it. Donnie C is "yearning" for something in every song on this album. He yearns of course for love, but he is also "yearning" for things like peace, friendship, family, god and of course for his own soul. That's no surprise considering the title of the album is "New Moment, New Choice." Donnie C is suggesting that not only is he at a crossroads, but the rest of us are as well and that "right now" is the time to make some of the "inevitable choices", that we know that we have to make but are simply putting off. And that if we continue to make those choices, that which we "yearn for" will continue to be elusive. I dunno if you will like this album or not, but I find it to be quite compelling. It's defiantly got the vibe of today, but unlike the vast majority of the other "neo soul artists" (none of whom want to be called "neo soul"), it actually contains 13 songs of extremely thoughtful and catchy lyrics, all untied by a common theme, with a call for personal action/responsibility, sung by an artist who is actually has a nice singing voice.

Perhaps Donnie C is correct in not running away from the tag "neo soul" as his less talented peers are doing? I mean, he is actually accomplished what I think that the original intent of the term was. He has produced an album of 13 excellent R&B songs, featuring the subject matter of traditional R&B, most of which he wrote himself that have today's sound to them.

Maybe this is something worth checking out????

PROFILE/CONCERT REVIEW: Donnie C

PROFILE/CONCERT REVIEW: Donnie CThis is a young man that I have known for the past several years, yet have never met in person prior to last night. Although I have met many people over the years that I have communicated with via the internet, it never fails to amaze me how little difference there is in people whenever I finally meet them in person. This was the case when I met Donnie C last night.

Of course Donnie C is a name that you have seen before, if you read the Soul-Patrol Times, where he has been a frequent poster for the past several years, telling us about his upcoming album and his events in Virginia, North Carolina & Tennessee. For some reason unknown to me, he was having his CD release party in Brooklyn last night at the Amarachi Lounge and I was compelled to put all else aside to go and check him out. I already knew that his new album was excellent, I've been listening to the various tracks for about a year as Donnie have been completing the songs.

For me this was an opportunity to meet an extremely talented young person that against all odds seemingly has "his head screwed on straight."

On stage Donnie is an excellent singer who simultaneously exudes strength, passion and artistic integrity, wrapped in a layer of both spiritual and afrocentric ideals. He is very reminiscent of Marlon Saunders on stage in some of his vocal stylings as well as his conversational style with the audience. Instead of the arrogant vibe that you can feel from many young performers these days, you feel a humble, yet confident person who just wants to make you feel at home, which is exactly the effect. However despite the performance, the main attraction for me is really just to meet Donnie for the first time, no different than it is any other time when I meet someone who is a part of Soul-Patrol for the very first time. I was not disappointed at all because Donnie C in "real life" is exactly as he is online and on the telephone. He is hard working, polite, respectful, determined, spiritual and more.

I walked away for Amarachi Lounge smiling because I had the chance to not only see Donnie C perform live, but to finally have met yet another person in "real life" who proved to me once again that the community (neighborhood) of people here online not just as a never ending mass of text & graphic, but does indeed have a "heart & soul." Hopefully the rest of you will also have the chance to see Donnie C perform and when you do, please take the time to walk up to him after the show & say hello. I guarantee that you will walk away from that encounter, a better person for having done so.
