Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

One of my favorite artists of the 2000's...

One of my favorite artists of the 2000s Me'Na is one of my favorite artists of the 2000's. I realize that many of you haven't really checked her out yet, but at this point in time you really should. Me'Na has been hanging around Soul-Patrol for quite a while now. A few of you may recall that she had a number of songs on the Soul-Patrol Digital/Virtual Album 1.0 (now out of print.) Not only did her songs appear on the album, but they were ranked among the highest quality songs on the album by the poll that we took of the first 300 people who purchased the album.

Me'Na isn't just great as a recording artist either. Here is what Iris Smith - Cleveland Soul-Patrol Coordinator had to say about Me'Na's live performance @ the Family Unity Day Festival in Cleveland earlier this summer:

“Me’na” has to have one the most awesome voices in the music industry, this was not my first time witnessing Me’na in action, I listened and watched her blow out a sax player a few years ago, she took on the sax tit for tat, and the audience was spellbound! Her performance in the park was equally as great, she sang from her CD “Living My Life” her voice is delightfully haunting, she sang the title track, “Living My Live” relaxed and cut loose with her latest single release, “Relaxed” Wowed the crowd, to a foot stomping, body rocking version of “Dr.FeelGood” she interacted with the audience as she sang, backed by a slamming band and superb background vocalist, her showmanship had the crowd cheering for more!..."

--Iris Smith - Cleveland Soul-Patrol Coordinator

In this issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter be sure and not only visit Me'Na's website (http://www.menasvision.com) but also to listen to Soul-Patrol's special Internet Radio Broadcast featuring Me'Na introduced by the legendary Baby Washington and hosted by nightrain" at the following link: http://www.soul-patrol.net/mena.ram

And of course after you check all of this out, let us know what cha think...

Thanks in advance...

BIO: Me'Na

Let's Do It Again (Black American Standard Music)

Me'na dubs Canton Ohio her home. An area steeped with tradition. With a host of eclectic entertainers hailing from the area. Walter Williams, James Ingram, Howard Hewitt, and Macy Gray. Just to have your name associated with these individuals is an achievement within itself.

She temporarily put aside her musical aspirations and focused on raising her family. Me'na a power company executive was stricken with a rare congenital brain condition called A.V.M. she states "it was a bomb exploding in my head!" Surviving two brain surgeries, and a lengthy recovery. After the storm. She promised the Savior, to lift her voice in praise, and give God the glory!!
http://www.menasvision.com

Me'na was introduced to a Cleveland based musical production team of the late Douglas Green, and Nathaniel Rhodes. The team took on the task of honing her Vocal, and acting abilities. The collaboration led to her debut at the prestigious Karamu Theater in "NO N@GGERS, NO JEWS, NO DOGS". Her voice drove the productions soundtrack to great musical heights. She also did a stint as Anne Wiggins Brown in the musical "GERSHWIN BY GEORGE". This operatic piece tested her abilities to its fullest. Which garnered critical acclaim! Then the vocalist channeled all of her energies into the completion of her debut CD. With the aid of visionary Nathaniel Rhodes, and the exceptional Bill Ransom as producers. Who decided to go with the live acoustical sound. The journey had begun.

"Living My Life" is a collection of songs that convey a wide range of emotions. From the sensual "I Of The Storm". The poignant "Time". Me'na penned the introspective title track "Living My Life". The inspirational "Journey Begins With You". The melancholy "Stooped" is about an unintelligent situation. Some well loved standards "Summertime", "Down By The River", and "My Funny Valentine". Whether near a pulpit, or under concert lights. Her dedication is unparalleled. Realizing she is blessed! Angels have certainly set her free. Me'na is definitely "Living Her Life". http://www.menasvision.com

Album Review: Me'Na - "Livin My Life"

Let's Do It Again (Black American Standard Music)

Sometimes a thing can be sooo nice, that ya just gotta do it twice. (and this is one of those times) http://www.menasvision.com

A few of you all here have had the occasion to meet my wife ("Mrs. Earthjuice"). Now as you might imagine, "Mrs. Earthjuice" is a big music fan. However unlike me, she is much more like a typical "50 something" Black American female in the type of music that she seeks out.

For example, she is an avid listener to what is commonly known as terrestrial "Urban AC Radio and in the Philadelphia where we live, there are two such stations (WRNB & WDAS). If you get into the car with her, there is a 99 percent probability that she will be listening to either one of those two stations. Despite the fact that most every brand new album on God's green earth, is actually right under the roof of her own home, she typically discovers new music on one of those two radio stations.

She says of my musical tastes ..."you are always listening to people that I have never heard of"

(in other words, she is a tough sell on artists that she doesn't get bombarded with via terrestrial radio)

However at work she does listen to internet radio and (thank goodness) she listens to Radioio. However she listened to either the Classic RnB channel or to the RnB Mix channel.

This morning she called me from work and told me that for some reason she decided to tune in the Nu Soul @ RadioIO channel. Of course I was surprised since that station only plays NEW releases and no oldies whatsoever.

She told me that she had just heard a great song on there that was a re-make of the old Buddy Miles song called "Down By The River" and that it had been done by an artist called Me'Na, that she had never heard of.

I said to her..."We have Me'Na's album at the house."
She said; "Cool, I'd like to hear it when I get home"

I am fully prepared to never see that album again, once I hand it to my wife :)

Here is my review of Me'Na's "Living My Life" (I strongly recommend it)

Me'Na "Living My Life"
(funk/rock/jazz/soul/spiritual/erotica/jams/kozmic/amazing)

http://www.menasvision.com

This is an awesome album.
I'm going to dispense with my usual "long winded review" in this case.
There is little explanation needed.
Either you "get it, or you don't".

To put it bluntly, Me'Na "Living My Life" puts on full display the type of "African American Earth Mother" that singers like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and others will become after they grow up.

This album is laced with a combination of eroticism, spirituality and wisdom that we thought Black people had completely given upon.

If albums could have a smell, this one would smell like a combination of incense, rose petals & collard greens. It's down home, yet sophisticated and bohemian all at the same time.

It's jazz, it's funk, it's rock, it's slow jams, it's kozmic, it's amazing...

For example, remember the classic song "Down By The River" by the great Buddy Miles?

Imagine if you will "Down By The River" performed with Donny Hathaway on keyboards, Carlos Santana on guitar and Ron Carter on bass, fronted by a female singer whose voice sounds like a cross between Nancy Wilson, Marlena Shaw, Betty Davis and Lynn Collins.

Well you don't have to imagine anything, because on the album "Living My Life" by Me'Na you can actually hear a version of "Down by the River" that sounds exactly like what I have described.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, do yourself a fava and pickup on this album.
You won't be disappointed.
The vibe of this album is incredible and right at this moment, it's my favorite album...

1. Intro Infinity & I of the Storm
2. P.I.A. (Plan In Action)
3. Home 2 Me
4. Summertime
5. Down By The River
6. Later
7. Living My Life
8. Deja View
9. My Funny Valentine
10. Journey Begins With You
11. Stoopid
12. Time
