SPN: Classic Soul - Revisionist History - Rod Stewart - Soulbook Review, (The Greatest Soul Singer of All Time)
||Soul-Patrol.Net Radio || Soul-Patrol Calendar || About Soul-Patrol

Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

What Is The Purpose of a R-E-V-I-E-W?

Well according to Wikipedia "a review is an evaluation of a publication, such as a movie, video game, musical composition, book, or a piece of hardware like a car, home appliance, or computer."

That sounds like a pretty good description to me, it's an evaluation (opinion) of something. We do LOTS of reviews here on Soul-Patrol. In fact some of yall have been around long enough to remember when our site was in fact called the "P*FUNK REVIEW."

In fact each week I am approached by dozens of artists, who write in and are seeking a review. When that happens I always do the same thing. I go to their website, listen to their music, then write them back and tell them my opinion (give them a review) on what I heard when I visited their site. In my experience, a review isn't really what most artists want, because reviews aren't always positive. What they really want from me is to do two things:

1. Tell them that their music is great (even if it isn't)
2. Tell everybody I know that I think their music is great (even if it isn't)

Here in this issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter, we have devoted the entire issue to an evaluation of a new album. It isn't a positive one on any level whatsoever. In fact we think that folks reading this evaluation should in fact do more than to simply not buy the album.

We think that you should tell everyone that you know who cares about the past, present & future of Black music NOT to buy this album.

Thanks in advance...Check out the "evaluation" below and let us know what cha think?

Revisionist History - Rod Stewart - Soulbook, (The Greatest Soul Singer of All Time)
(Soul)

Revisionist History - Rod Stewart - Soulbook, (The Greatest Soul Singer of All Time) WHO OWNS HISTORY?

It is often said that one should never pick a fight with someone who "order's ink by the barrel." That is of course a reference to picking a fight with the press, because you simply can't win. They will overwhelm you with written documentation.

The same concept can also be applied to individuals who would like to adjust their historical legacy in whatever way that would make their legacy somehow different for people who don't have first hand knowledge, than what the reality of the memories of the people who did have first hand knowledge of what that individual's actual legacy was.

Individuals who control the written (including text, graphics, video, audio) documentation about their own historical legacy are in a position to frame that legacy in whatever manner they would like to. These individuals know that their written documentation will outlast the "opinions" of people who have firsthand knowledge of the truth. Thus they are in a position to create their own version of history with the full knowledge that 100 years after the fact, it will be their version of history that will be regarded as the factual truth as opposed to the "opinions" of other people, who are now dead.

THOSE WHO TAKE THE TIME TO DOCUMENT IT

I say all of this to let you know that is exactly what is occurring in the case of Rod Stewart and that it was predicted by Soul-Patrol.com many years ago, when we analyzed the 1 hour broadcast on VH-1 of "Rod Stewart: Behind the Music."

In that episode of VH-1's Behind the Music it was made quite clear that one of the highlights of Rod Stewart's career (from Rod Stewart's perspective) was the "kinship" between himself and singers such as Sam Cooke, David Ruffin, and others. He talked at length about his desire to not only emulate their singing styles, but to be remembered as primarily a "soul singer" himself. Of course many pictures were shown of Rod Stewart with these artists, both onstage and in social situations. The implication of this was to imply that Rod Stewart was somehow a "peer" of artists like Sam Cooke, David Ruffin, and others.

To many people at that time, this was regarded as nothing serious, simply an obscure television program about an average artist, who made more headlines in his career because of wild partying, failed marriages and illegitimate children, than for any musical accomplishments.

However, we took that documentary to task, suggesting that Rod Stewart was trying to utilize that one hour piece of filmed documentation, that would not only be seen by millions of people on TV, but also archived in museums, libraries, schools, etc as the single piece of authoritative documentation about the career of Rod Stewart. Over time as there are fewer people alive with first hand knowledge of Rod Stewart's actual performances, this documentation moves closer to being "fact".

VALIDATION BY THE NEGRO

Revisionist History - Rod Stewart - Soulbook, (The Greatest Soul Singer of All Time)"Rod Stewart is the greatest blue eyed soul singer of all time" --James Brown

Rod Stewart's latest album is entitled "Soulbook," an album of classic soul cover songs, including several duets with artists like Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. Most folks won't give it more than a passing thought.

The issue of "validation" has been an ongoing part of the long saga of "culture banditry." It means getting the "victim" to become an active co-conspirator in their own victimization.

This willingness on the part of the victim to be an active co-conspirator in their own victimization, in exchange for short term economic gain, is literally the very definition of "culture banditry."

In fact the very notion of "selling your own down the river," has been a part of the legacy of Black Americans right from the start, when they were often sold into slavey in the first place by their own brethren.

However in the case of Rod Stewart, it goes well beyond simple/traditional "culture banditry" for the sake of economic gain. This isn't just about selling an album or a series of shows. This is more about trying to swindle Black folks quite literally of their own history and a legacy that should be inherited by their children, not inherited by the children of Rod Stewart.

That is what the name of this game is, and right now, Rod Stewart holds all of the cards in his hand. That is because he has the ability to document all of this in such a manner, that at the end of the day, the "truth" that he documents, will be the only "truth" that matters.

What will be documented as a result of this album will be that "the negro will have validated the greatness of Rod Stewart of creating Black culture that is greater than that created by any Black person in history."

And of course the greatness of Rod Stewart will all be validated by the negro:

--No doubt there will be press events featuring Rod Stewart standing next to various R&B performers.

--No doubt there will be TV appearances featuring Rod Stewart singing duets with some of these performances.

--No doubt there will be concerts at venues like the Apollo Theatre & perhaps Black churches around the United States.

--No doubt there will be quotes by negro spokespersons/organizations about Rod Stewart "saving soul music."

--No doubt there will be a Grammy award nomination and presentation by a negro artist of distinction, thanking Rod Stewart for "saving soul music."

All of this will be carefully documented and packaged along with the previous documentation.

INFORMATION USAGE

This validation by the negro, combined with the pre-existing documentation on Rod Stewart's "soul singing" will be archived and kept in a safe place for east future retrieval/distribution, thus insuring that the children of Rod Stewart will inherit that legacy.

Then 50 years from now that documentation will be retrieved and distributed around the world, to people who have no first hand knowledge of Rod Stewart's actual performances.

And the truth that Rod Stewart has documented will be the ONLY truth that matters.

ROD STEWART "SOULBOOK" REVIEW/RANT
(Soul)

ROD STEWART SOULBOOK REVIEW/RANT GREETINGS,

ROD STEWART "SOULBOOK".

WHEN I SAW THIS BOOTLEG I COULDN'T BUY IT QUICK ENOUGH.

WELL ROD, I'M NOT SURE I UNDERSTAND YOUR REASONING BEHIND THIS MOVE. I'D SAY YOU'RE A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT. SURE IF YOU'D COME OUT WITH THIS A FEW YEARS BACK IT WOULD HAVE MADE SENSE.

WE ALL KNOW THIS IS WHAT YOU'VE ALWAYS ASPIRED TO BE AND EVEN THOUGH YOU'VE FALLEN FAR SHORT....... IN THE WORDS OF BROTHER MAYFIELD....YOU KEPT ON PUSHING.

WELL YOU'VE HIT A BRICK WALL HERE SON.

FIRST OF ALL, MICHAEL MCDONALD HAS ALREADY PILLAGED AND PLUNDERED THIS GENRE - SOULFUL WHITE BOY SINGS SOUL MUSIC - AND MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT...MICHAEL MCDONALD HAS ALWAYS BEEN SOULFUL.

WHY?

BECAUSE HE'S NEVER WENT OUT OF HIS WAY TO TRY TO BE. HE JUST SANG HIS ASS OFF.

ALTHOUGH MICHAEL MADE ONE MAJOR FAUX PAS ON ONE OF HIS "MOTOWN" LPS WHEN HE INCLUDED "STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN". THAT SONG WAS ON AVCO BY THE STYLISTICS - NOT ON MOTOWN, BUT I WAS TOLD HIS REASONING FOR INCLUDING IT WAS BECAUSE MARVIN AND DIANA RECORDED IT ON THEIR DUET LP.

YEAH THAT MAKES SENSE.

SO WHEN I RECORD "CARLTON J. SMITH TACKLES THE BEATLES SONGBOOK" I'LL BE SURE TO INCLUDE "LUCILLE" AND "GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY"...YOU KNOW...BECAUSE THE BEATLES RECORDED IT.

ASININE MOVE MICHAEL BUT YOU CAN BE FORGIVEN...YOU'VE PUT IN ENOUGH WORK.

BUT BACK TO ROD SKI...AS I JUST SAID MICHAEL MCDONALD HAS ALREADY TAKEN THIS TO THE BRIDGE, AND AS IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH....BROTHER SEAL JUST DID THE SAME THING, HE RE RECORDED AN ENTIRE CD OF SOUL CLASSICS.

SO DID THE TEMPTATIONS WITH THEIR CD "BACK TO FRONT". MIXED RESULTS - WOULD HAVE PREFERRED NEW TEMPTS MATERIAL.

SO ROD THERE WAS REALLY NO NEED FOR THIS EFFORT FROM YOU.

BUT SINCE YOU CHOSE TO BLESS US WITH IT, I AM COMPELLED TO SPEAK ON IT AND IT'S CONTENTS.

"SAME OL' SONG" - NOTHING IS ADDED TO THE SONG; THERE'S REALLY NOTHING THAT YOU CAN ADD TO THE SONG. I'D JUST AS SOON LISTEN TO THE MIGHTY LEVI STUBBS RIP IT UP.

"MY CHERIE AMOUR" - SEE ABOVE COMMENT AND INSERT STEVIES NAME IN PLACE OF LEVI.

"YOU MAKE ME FEEL BRAND NEW" - IF ANY OF YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON "SIMPLY RED LIVE IN ITALY" (I BELIEVE THEY'RE IN A COLISEUM) IF YOU CAN GET AHOLD OF THIS DVD...PLEASE CHECK OUT WHAT MICK HUCKNALL DOES TO THIS SONG.

HE LITERALLY SINGS THE HELL OUT OF IT.

WHEREAS RUSSELL THOMPKINS JR. WITH HIS GORGEOUS ENUNCIATION AND BEAUTIFUL FALSETTO TACKLED THE NOTES WITH GRACE AND APLOMB...MICK BELTS THEM OUT WITH SHEER FEROCITY, HITTING THE NOTES CLEAR AS A BELL.

I REMEMBER GETTING CHILLS WATCHING/LISTENING TO HIM HIT THOSE NOTES.

SO ROD HERE YOU COME WITH THIS LACKLUSTER VERSION AND IT'S JUST SO HO HUM. MICK HUCKNALL TOOK THIS SONG TO THE BRIDGE AND DROPPED IT OFF.

"YOUR LOVE KEEP LIFTING ME HIGHER AND HIGHER" - THIS IS A SONG THAT TERRENCE TRENT DARBY COULD DO BECAUSE HIS VOICE GETS UP THERE. ROD YOU DON'T HAVE THE RANGE TO MESS WITH JACKIE AND THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF JACKIE'S MOST JOYOUS SONGS.

"TRACKS OF MY TEARS" - IT ALMOST WORKS ROD BECAUSE THIS IS SUCH A GREAT SONG. YOU SHOULD HAVE TUCKED IT AWAY ON ONE OF YOUR POP ALBUMS AND THEN YOU WOULDN'T HAVE DRAWN SUCH ATTENTION TO YOUR GLARING DEFICIENCIES AS A "SOUL SINGER".

"LET IT BE ME" - THIS ACTUALLY SOUNDS NICE, BUT IT WOULD APPEAR TO BE MORE "SONGBOOK" THEN "SOULBOOK"

"RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA"

"WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKEN HEARTED" - NOTHING IS ADDED TO THESE SONGS, IN FACT YOU MISS THOSE LOW NOTES THAT BROOK USED TO HIT AND ON ANY BROOK BENTON SONG THAT'S THE SAUCE THAT MAKES THE MEAT.

I REMEMBER WHEN RANDY TRAVIS RECORDED "IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME", RANDY NAILED THOSE LOW NOTES. ESSENTIAL IF YOU'RE GOING TO COVER BROTHER BROOK.

"LOVE TRAIN" - EMBARRASSING, SIMPLY EMBARRASSING.

"WONDERFUL WORLD" - HIS TIMING IS SO VERY OFF IN THE BEGINNING OF THIS SONG, HAD ANYONE IN HIS CAMP LISTENED TO THE ORIGINAL AT ALL?

"IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW" - NOT BAD ROD...BUT SEAL JUST RECORDED THIS ON HIS CD OF SOUL COVERS, SO IT SEEMS POINTLESS.

"JUST MY IMAGINATION" - ALMOST NOT BAD.

SO OVERALL THE WHOLE PROJECT SEEMS UNNECESSARY.

WHO WAS THIS FOR ROD? WHAT DEMOGRAPHIC WAS THIS AIMED AT?

RODS NOT GOING TO HIP ANY OF THE YOUNGER KIDS TO THIS MATERIAL BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT LISTENING TO HIM AND HIS FAN BASE IS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW THIS STUFF ANYWAY, BY THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS.

SO AGAIN WHAT'S THE POINT?

MY OTHER THING WITH THESE KIND OF PROJECTS IS THAT IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT, THEN WHY BOTHER.

AND THE TRICK IS, DO YOU DARE TO REWORK A CLASSIC"

YOU CAN COME UP WITH SOMETHING BRILLIANT OR YOU CAN COME UP WITH SOMETHING ATROCIOUS.

IT'S A THIN LINE. AS MUCH AS I DIG WHAT BROTHER CALVIN RICHARDSON DID WITH BOBBY WOMACK'S MATERIAL,,AND I COULDN'T WAIT TO GET THE CD...MIDWAY THROUGH I JUST WANTED TO HEAR BOBBY.....ESPECIALLY WHEN CALVIN MISSED SOME OF THE GRIT AND GRIME ON BOBBY'S VOCALS.

NOW HE COULDN'T HAVE TAKEN A CHANCE AND REARRANGED THAT MATERIAL TOO MUCH BECAUSE IT MAY HAVE FALLEN SHORT, SO IT'S A VICIOUS CYCLE.

BUT BROTHER ROD?

YOU CAN FORGET THIS...IF THIS IS WHAT THEY'RE BASING YOUR BEING THE "GREATEST SOUL SINGER" EVER AROUND, THEN YOU SHOULD HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE RIGHT NOW AND ANNOUNCE YOUR RETIREMENT.

AFTER YOU APOLOGIZE TO THE MEMORY OF SAM COOKE, OTIS REDDING, RAY CHARLES, DAVID-PAUL-EDDIE-MELVIN, MARVIN, JAMES, AND A HOST OF OTHERS.

PEACE AND BLESSINGS,

--CARLTON J. SMITH
