Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

Tidbits, Random Thoughts,Trivial Pursuits (30 second "brain dump")

Tidbits, Random Thoughts,Trivial Pursuits (30 second 1. THE SOUL-PATROL TIMES: Will not publish this week on Thursday. It will be back next week. In the meanwhile you can check the event listings/announcements up on the Soul-Patrol.com website or on our calendar page at the following url: http://www.davisind.com/wc

2. JAYE Q'S NEW VIDEO CHANNEL: I know that a whole bunch of yall have been checking out the GREAT new double CD Jazz/Funk/Soul album of our friend Jaye Q at his website Now I want you all to check out Jaye Q's new video channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/jayeqmusic where you can not only see/hear Jaye Q performing live from BB Kings in Los Angeles, but you can also see/hear his new music video called "Remix." Be sure to let him know what cha think by leaving him comments.

3. EXAMPLES OF CLASSIC SOUL SONGS THAT GET NO RESPECT: Parliments -I Wanna Testify, Vaughan Brothers - Tick Tock, The Politicians featuring McKinley Jackson - Free Your Mind, Lou Rawls - Your Good Thing (is about to end), Chairmen of the Board - Chairmen of the Board, Candi Staton - One More Chance On Love, King Curtis - My Sweet Lord (with Billy Preston) (live), Leon Huff - I Ain't Jivin I'm Jammin, Jimi Hendrix - Dolly Dagger, Jackie Wilson - You Got Me Walking, Gil Scott-Heron - Lady Day and John Coltrane. There are literally thousands of songs that fit into this category, so this list are merely examples. However if you are a Soul/R&B DJ and you are playing these songs in your rotation, you get some props from me. If you aren't, then you should consider adding these songs and asking your listeners they think of these songs. Of course you can hear these songs (along with the other couple of thousand that most "Classic Soul" DJ's don't play over on the Classic RnB Channel on RadioIO.com)

4. TWISTED LOGIC: Can someone explain to me how BEGGING me to "like" you is different from BEGGING me to be your "fan" on Facebook? Plus - can anyone explain to me the purpose of artists BEGGING either for fans or for people to like them? Artists like Marvin Gaye or Miles Davis or James Brown ever had to BEG anyone to either "like" them or to become their "fan?" Whatever happened to people digging an artist, because of the music???

5. WHAT'S THE WRITE WORD? I was recently asked by the Popmatters.com site along with over other 100 music writers the following: "If an eager young writer cornered you and asked 'What's the best advice you could give me?' what would you have to say?" You can read my response along with the others at the following link: http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/125761-part-1-charles-aaron-to-dave-dimartino/P3

6. MY THANKS: I would like to thank NYC's WRKS-98.7; Bob Slade and James Mtume (yes THAT Mtume) for having me as a guest on their popular "Open Line" talk show last Sunday to discuss the life/legacy of Lena Horne. I'd also like to thank Ms. Simone Beverly of Black Women in Communication (www.soulrush.org) for interviewing me on the topic of Black (Knee-gro) Radio last week as well.

7. SONNYBOY NEW ALBUM COMING SOON: He's one of Soul-Patrol's favorite artists, his new album will be coming soon. I've already heard it and it's off the chain!!! Of course we will be featuring it right here on Soul-Patrol.com as soon as it's available. In the meanwhile, check out SonnyBoy (Shel Riser) as he gives us a preview of the upcoming New York Underground Soul Tour - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X60tURJS1ow Be sure to let him know what cha think by leaving him comments.

8. THE GARRY SHIDER MEDICAL FUND: Donate to assist in the medical care of the legendary P-Funk guitarist (the diaperman), who is currently undergoing cancer treatment at the following url - http://www.garryshidermedicalfund.com

9. RAND PAUL/LIBERTARIANISM: It would be very easy to simply write off Rand Paul as simply another "Kentucky Fried Elmer Fudd/Tea Bagger," however to do so would be a serious mistake. Libertarian philosophy is something that goes back to the founding of the American republic, and it's a serious thing. Basically it says that property owners have more rights than do non property owners. It is based somewhat on the notion that private interests outweigh the public good, regardless of how "good or desirable" that public good might be. This philosophy is rooted in the idea of "rugged individualism" which is certainly one of the characteristics that is at the core of the American belief system. On a personal level while I certainly don't want the government to tell me what to do with my "private property," I also realize that only 150 years ago I would have been considered to be the "private property" (a slave) of someone else who didn't want the government to tell them what to do with their "private property" either. So in the end it is really all about a battle between the "have's & have nots," in a time of ever decreasing resources and increasing competition for those dwindling resources.

10. GROVER LIVE IS IN THE ITUNES JAZZ TOP TEN: This was certainly some great news that we got in last week. I'm sure that more than a few of you are curious as to why that is happening? Well if you check out this video of Grover doing the Classic Soul song "SOULFUL STRUT", then you will start to understand why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Tk-6ApBPS0

11. COLLEGE/SCOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE: Speaking of "decreasing resources and increasing competition," lately I have been spending a whole lot of my time assisting my daughter Rachel with her goal of attending college. Many of you here have met Rachel. She's a 17 year old HS junior here in New Jersey; she's a bright, articulate young woman, with excellent High School grades and will be taking her SAT exam next month. If any of you have any specific information on college admissions and/or scholarship programs that she should be applying to, I would really appreciate the assistance and so will you. That's because if I can't find enough assistance, then I will forced to use the Soul-Patrol Newsletter to raise the money to fund Rachel's college education :-). Just hit me with an email, if you have any specific entities for me to contact: earthjuice@prodigy.net

12. JOHN LEE HOOKER - is still who I wanna be like whenever I grow up.
