Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

Katrina: A Cultural, Political, Economic and Social Disaster

The issues surrounding the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina aren't going away anytime soon. One thing that is clear to me is that the facts will continue to unfold. It's also clear to me that the "big picture" will unfold at a much slower pace. Therefore we must be diligent in doing our own research and not relying on the mainstream media for the facts.

The reason why Soul-Patrol became so involved in all of this is because we are concerned about something called "Great Black Music From The Ancient To The Future." And in a both spiritual and symbolic way, the city of New Orleans is the birthplace of "Great Black Music From The Ancient To The Future."

We are all here on the internet, which provides us with a wonderful resource to learn the truth for ourselves. It can indeed be used as a mechanism to do other things besides forwarding dirty jokes and pictures.

One thing that I think we have all learned from Katrina is that it really is a foolish thing to stick around when a MONSTER Hurricane is coming. The main thing I hated about some of the coverage both then and now, was the implication that somehow Black people as a race aren't smart enough to know this or that somehow being poor, means that you are also stupid.

I emcourage you to scroll down, read the commentary, and more importantly listen to part1 and part 2 of the broadcast. There is some GREAT music and some GREAT conversation

Soul-Patrol Remembers Hurricane Katrina

Soul-Patrol Remembers Hurricane Katrina

I suppose that a few of you all have been doing the same thing that I have been doing this weekend, watching some of the mainstream media coverage of the 5 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Watching that coverage has caused me to think back not only to the events of late August/2005, but also how we responded to those events here on Soul-Patrol.
http://www.soul-patrol.net/katrina.ram

Back in 2005, when the news of the storm first hit the airways and it looked like the city of New Orleans was going to take a direct hit, we did what came naturally, and I enlisted the services of "Nightrain' to put together a 1 hour internet radio special dedicated to the city of New Orleans and it's musical legacy. He quickly put together a furious/funky show featuring artists like Branford Marsalis (Buckshot LaFounque), Louis Armstrong, Meters, Eddie Bo, Little Richard, St Gabriel's Celestial Brass Band and other artists who had produced music associated with the city of New Orleans (so that's "PART 1")
http://www.soul-patrol.net/katrina.ram

Normally that would have been that, we produced a SLAMMIN Internet Radio show. However we don't do ANYTHING "normal" here on Soul-Patrol, so we ended up doing something completely "abnormal." We saw Mayor Ray "King Creole" Nagin appearing hourly on television complaining that nobody would help him save the city of New Orleans. To us that seemed like a rather odd notion, so rather than simply accept the "status quo" (they won't help him or the city, because the rest of the country would rather see the black mayor and his city destroyed), we did something quite abnormal (for Black folks anyhow):

1. We did our own research.
2. We documented that research.

That led to my 3 hour appearance on Nationwide radio (the Bev Smith Show) on the American Urban Radio Network, to discuss the results of our research into exactly what the government's response to Hurricane Katrina actually meant and who was really responsible for that response. (and that's "PART 2")

I decided to package "PART 1" and "PART 2" together as our way of marking the 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and play it in the "blackround" of the home page of the Soul-Patrol.com website. Here is the link to listen to "PART 1" and "PART 2," packaged together:
http://www.soul-patrol.net/katrina.ram

We are pretty proud of all of this, so take a moment to click on the link and just let it play in the background of whatever you are doing online, take a listen and let me know what cha think, you may or may not agree with our research.

It was pretty controversial at the time (as you will hear people yelling at me during the Bev Smith Show, however history is certainly proving that our research was actually pretty close to the truth!!!:
