GWEN MCCRAE - "Gwen McCrae Sings TK": featuring the hit single "Please Don't Go"

TK Records wasn’t just a record label, it represented a sound, a sound so exciting and unique that it emerged as one of the most powerful forces in music, with artists whose recording, performing, writing, arranging, and production talents have commanded worldwide attention for four decades....

LATIMORE - "All About the Rhythm and the Blues": Featuring the hit single "Mr. Right Now"

The melodies, the riffs and the rhythms, will reach deep down into that place that makes you close your eyes and bob your head. It is that, “Oooh! It sounds so good, I can feel it in my chest,” that puts that easy blues look on your face. You know the one! When you don’t care who is watching or what you’re doing, it just grabs ahold of you and makes you groove!....

Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

One of the questions I get from readers is "Why can't we have a new Motown?" My answer to them is that they haven't been paying attention. Motown was an "Indie Soul" label back in the day that had a huge impact on the music scene. Well the same thing really is happening today, literally right in front of our faces.

One of the biggest trends in music today is the explosion in something called "Independent Soul Music." Here in 2010 there are tons of "Indie Soul" artists/labels. You can see them all over the internet, posting their various activity on YouTube, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and other places here online, all pointing you back to their website/iTunes/Amazon/CDBaby, etc where you can buy their music.

Today in 2010 there are literally thousands of independent artists/labels producing Soul music, completely outside of the major label system, much the same as Motown did way back when. And as you all know, we feature the music of many of these artists/labels right here on www.Soul-Patrol.com as well as on www.RadioIO.com

One of the "indie soul" entities from the past, that remains a major player today in the internet/iPod era is Mr. Henry Stone. Henry Stone is a "shadowy figure," whose name we all know from reading the liner notes of the albums we brought back in the 1970's & 1980's by artists who were on the legendary TK Records label.

TK Records was an "indie soul label" that was also the home to mega selling artists such as; KC & the Sunshine Band, Timmy Thomas, George McCrae, Latimore, Little Beaver, Gwen McCrae, Clarence Reid, Bobby Caldwell, Newcleus and more. We know the name Henry Stone, because he was the producer of the hit albums by these artists.

Today TK Records no longer exists, but the legacy of the Independent Soul Music that came from the label continues to endure in 2010 at www.henrystonemusic.com, where Henry continues to make available brand new soul music, featuring some of the very same legendary artists.

Today we want to feature two of them for your listening pleasure:

--GWEN MCCRAE - "Gwen McCrae Sings TK": featuring the hit single "Please Don't Go"

---LATIMORE - "All About the Rhythm and the Blues": Featuring the hit single "Mr. Right Now"

Both are excellent albums, are reviewed in detail below and if you click on the links you will be taken directly to websites where you can listen to them. In fact the album "Gwen McCrae Sings TK," is actually one of the top new albums in Black music released in the 2000's and I am very pleased that Henry Stone is doing what ALL "indie soul artists/labels" that created HIGH QUALITY BLACK MUSIC during the earlier part of the 2000's, should be doing RIGHT NOW…

(and that is RE-RELEASING that music RIGHT NOW, so that all of the new people that have come online in the past few years can check out what they have missed)

Album Review: Latimore - All About the Rhythm and the Blues

Album Review: Latimore - All About the Rhythm and the Blues“Maybe my age is showing. Maybe my bias to traditional classic Soul. Maybe it's my affinity to time honored performers who still have something to say musically, say it and without compromise with whom they are. Then again, "maybe" this is just a good album.

If you still have an appreciation for Classic Soul. If you still have an appreciation for "Da Blues", then this album should be in your library. The album is called "All About the Rhythm and the Blues" by the legend of "Southern Soul", LATIMORE. He's still got it, he's still the "High Priest" of Southern Soul.

Track List

--CITY LIFE
--DROWN IN MY OWN TEARS
--AROUND THE WORLD ( I really like this one. I think most cats will relate.)
--EVERYDAY IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY
--OBAMA AND THE FAT MAN
--DON'T GIVE UP ON OUR LOVE
--EVERYDAY I HAVE THE BLUES (His rendition of the Blues Classic)
--PASS THE PIANO BLUES (..a continuation of "Everyday..." with a piano solo)
--SINGING AND PLAYING THE BLUES
--MR. RIGHT NOW (This one tickles the hell out of me. Talking 'bout "cutting to the chase.)
--AROUND THE WORLD (Club mix bonus track)
Now I know that there will be those who will offer the "dated" argument. Well they are welcome to it. This is "Latimo' "! No more and no less what we, who have listened to him over the decades, can or should expect. Pure Southern Soul/Blues with the stories that are from the "down home" experience and perspective. Believe it or not, we really haven't gotten too hip to relate no matter how "citified" we have become. I think we still need these kinds of projects to remind us of just how simple things really are in the end of the day.

I guess it's pretty plan, Earl Gregory gets "the Grown Folks" albums. This is a "Grown Folks" album for sho'. This "is" LATIMORE as we have come to appreciate him for decades, and this album exemplifies his continuing reign as the "High Priest" of Southern Soul and Blues.

Album Review: Gwen McCrae - "Gwen McCrae Sings TK"

Album Review: Gwen McCrae Sings TKHow many of yall out there remember TK Records? That great indy label out of Miami that was a Black music hit making machine during the 1970's and 1980's. If you have fond memories of TK Records or if you were too young and have only heard of the great music from this legendary "indie" label, then I have got something truly special for you.

First things first, let me give you the track listing on this one...

Rockin Chair (w/Latimore)
Rock Your Baby
What You Won't Do For Love
Jazz Freak
Please Don't Go
Let's Straighten It Out
Keep It Comin Love (w/ KC)
Why Can't We Live Together (w/Timmy Thomas)
90% Of Me Is You
Clean Up Woman
Party Down
Misty Blue
Honey Honey (w/David Houston)
You Gotta Love Me, Like I Love Me (w/KC)
Rockin Chair

Now let me tell you what you are getting:

You are getting essentially the greatest hits of the legendary Southern Soul-Funk-Disco-Jazz-Kitchen Sink label called "TK RECORDS" as interpreted by the GREAT vocal stylings of the legendary Gwen McCrae, with equally legendary former TK artists as "special guests" like KC, Timmy Thomas, Latimore, Little Beaver and more. All under the direction of the legendary former owner of the TK label, Mr. Henry Stone. I actually shouldn't have to write anymore about this CD (however you know that I am going to...lol).

The album "Gwen McCrae Sings TK," is a must have for lovers of Classic Soul!! In some ways it's kinda like a "manual version of the Motown Remixed CD" from a few years ago. It's always a risk when you mess around with classic songs, but this is a case where it all works. These remakes by Gwen McCrae are especially tasty, because she is accompanied by the original artists. For example take a listen to "Straighten it Out", Gwen is singing her be-hind off and then suddenly out of nowhere about midway thru the song, LATIMORE'S booming voice joins her and it turns into a duet of cosmic proportions that almost makes you forget about the original. Even you disco haters out there will dig Gwen's remake of KC & the Sunshine Band's "Keep It Comin Love". The song is slowed down just a tad, but with the same basic beat and horns, throw KC's voice in there to lend some respect to the original and you end up with a smoking funk jam. And then the song ends and you hear that super stank nasty haunting organ that instantly signals the beginning of "Why Cant We Live Together", realize that it's actually Timmy Thomas playing and singing along with Gwen. I know everyone remembers and loves Sade's remake of "Why Can't We Live Together", right? Well Gwen McCrae's version makes Sade's version sound like it was sung by a little girl. "Party Down" (which is one of my all time favorite songs) starts off with a spoken word intro by Gwen McCrae and then she gets into it (I'm assuming with Little Beaver himself on Guitar coming in with that fantastic riff that George Benson uses all of the time...lol). You Gotta Love Me, Like I Love Me is a MONSTER slow jam w/ KC and so on and so forth.

So what more can I say, but "TAKE A TRIP, YA BETTA GET HIP…" (and buy this album!!!) --Bob Davis
