    Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter

    To kick off Soul-Patrol's celebration of Black History Month, I would like to start us off with the topic of what we refer to as "Southern Soul and Blues". Although it may not be obvious, Soul-Patrol has been covering "Southern Soul and Blues" since it's inception. In fact we even have a home page for it at the following link:

    http://www.soul-patrol.com/soul/south.htm

    I will be the first to admit that our coverage has been rather disorganized to this point, but that is about to change and change in a BIG way. It needs to change for several reasons, chief among them is because….

    THE TIMES WE ARE LIVING IN DEMAND
    THAT WE GET BACK TO THE ROOT
    IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN OUR SANITY

    And for Black music in Amerikkka, that means SOUTHERN SOUL & BLUES!!

    So we are going to focus on Southern Soul and Blues in this issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter, by highlighting some of the SOUTHREN FRIED MUSIC of a few of our members. Lattimore, Chairman of the Board, Leela James, Billy Jones Bluez, Mighty Sam McClain, Bettye LaVette, and Soul Project Reconnection.

    We are going to give you our award winners once again for the best Southern Soul & Blues CD releases of 2005 and to share with you two internet radio broadcasts from Soul-Patrol.Net Radio. One is focused on music from the city of New Orleans and one is focused on music from the city of Memphis.

    Finally we are also introducing for you our SOUTHERN SOUL & BLUES DATABASE: Contains over 7,000 Southern Soul & Blues entries (EXCLUSIVE TO SOUL-PATROL).

    And that's just to kick things off…
    Look for us to start including more frequent reports, reviews, internet radio broadcasts and more from the world of Southern Soul and Blues, both in the Soul-Patrol Newsletter and the Soul-Patrol website. We have DJ's, writers and artists from all over the county who will be contributing to this effort! In addition we will be partnering with many independent record companies, publications and more to make certain that we are able to stay on top of things.

    SOUTHERN SOUL & BLUES DATABASE: Contains over 7,000 Southern Soul & Blues entries (EXCLUSIVE TO SOUL-PATROL)

    Benny Latimore: Early Years

    BENNY LATIMORE: EARLY YEARSBorn in Charleston, TN in 1939, Benny Latimore was influenced by country music, his Baptist church choir, and the Blues. WLAC, via the strong evening signal from Nashville, was a favorite in Latimore’s youth.

    In a career spanning over 35 years and beginning with recordings in the 1960s for Miami music legend Henry Stone, the gems on this CD were cut on the Dade label long before Benny’s success on the Glades/T.K. label. These early recordings for Dade are solid deep soul, graced by Latimore’s deep, sultry voice.

    Included on this disc are the much sought after 1965 hits, "I Can’t Go On Anymore" and "Rain From the Sky", originally recorded on Stone’s Blade label. These are treasures that until now only a few collectors were lucky enough to have. Today we bring them to you for the world to hear. "Sensational" really is the best word to describe Latimore. He proved to be extremely adept as both a superlative vocalist and keyboard player par excellence. Benny Latimore is Florida’s master soul stylist.

    Chairman of the Board - All in the Family

    Chairman of the Board - All in the Family Brand new Southern Soul CD from the LEGENDARY Chairman of the Board! The fifteen track CD features the R&B rendition of the title track “All in the Family. Also featured is the Chairman’s new southern soul single “The Blacker the Berry and “You Gotta’ Crawl Before You Walk, featuring a soulful performance by Danny Woods as lead vocalist. The new Chairman of the Board CD called “All in the Family arranged, remixed, written and produced by General Johnson.

    Leela James - A Change is Gonna Come

    Leela James - A Change is Gonna ComeImagine if a major label decided that it would be in their best interests to hire a crack production team to take a young Black woman out of South Central Los Angeles with a POWERFUL set of lungs and create a piece of art that takes you back to the time when singers like Carla Thomas, Betty Wright, Mavis Staples and others ruled the charts? Now imagine this recording being created back in 2003 and sitting on the shelf till now? Do you like your slow jams dripping with a mixture of erotic love juices and BBQ sauce made for dipping your "biscuit" into? Well if u do (like I do) then you might just like this CD by Leela James...

    Billy Jones Bluz: "Prime Suspect For The Blues"

    Billy Jones BluzA natural and gifted performer, Billy Jones has been touring and performing professionally since his teens and has backed-up or performed on shows with The Dazz Band, Al Hudson and One Way, Vernon Garrett, Willie Clayton, Chocolate Milk, Chaka Khan, The Bar-Kays and many others...

    Jones has now formed his own band of unique and talented musicians to play a music style that puts a contemporary spin on the traditional sounds of his old skool teachers. ...He calls it tha' Bluez ! The Billy Jones Show and Revue represents a new generation of underground Bluez Artists. These are real Bluez people that play music for today's music fans... It ain't your grampa's music, or that same ol' predictable blues stuff that you may find at big corporate record companies... but then, what do these corporate guys know about what's happening on the street?

    Billy Jones has put together an outstanding group of musicians who produce a sound that presents the Bluez from a more urbanized and street-wise point of view. Billy's first CD 'Prime Suspect for the Blues' is a favorite of music critics and DJ's all over the United States, and has been featured in BRE magazine, BLUES REVUE magazine, WHAT'S UP magazine and many others. We have been jamming to Billy Jones Bluz here on Soul-Patrol for a while and have been featuring his song "Deal Wit Da Devil" on the site during Black History month and year long. Click here and go to his site and check out his new CD called "Prime Suspect For The Blues".

    Soul Project Reconnection

    Soul Project ReconnectionSOUL PROJECT/Reconnection is something special. The eight (count em!) talented and experienced vocalists all demonstrate great pipes AND a keen sense of interpretation. The songs reflect a rich R&B heritage-yet they stand on their own as viable, contemporary "pure songs". The playing is tasty and unobtrusive. In this case it takes no effort to experience the vocal performances and the melodies and lyrics. Songs range from the witty to the haunting. I think SOUL PROJECT/Reconnection may be the start of something big. Great "vision". Great work done by all....Nat Speir

    Mighty Sam McClain: Soul Survivor

    Mighty Sam McClainMighty Sam McClain is a Soul Singer originally from Louisiana, now residing in New Hampshire. His powerful voice and presence have been captivating audiences of all ages for the past four decades. Mighty Sam McClain would like to share his music with you. Here's what's been going on, and what you have to look forward to...

    Mighty Sam McClain is proud to once again be nominated for the "Best Blues Act" by the Boston Music Awards. If you would like to show your support for Sam, please go to the Boston Music Awards website and vote!

    While we're on the subject of awards, Living Blues Magazine has announced Sam to be the "Outstanding Male Vocalist of 2004". A great choice, in our opinion!

    Sam would like to thank Bob Davis of Soul Patrol for presenting him with the "Past/Future Legend of Black Music Award" for Sam's outstanding contributions in Black American Standard Music.

    Concert Review: Bettye LaVette Terrorizes NYC @ Joe's Pub

    Cherl and Bettye By definition, a terrorist inflicts damage. Bettye LaVette inflicted some serious damage to the little box that all of the "black music experts" out there would like to keep Soul music inside of. That "little box" is now battered, disfigured and perhaps changed forever. (PS look for upcoming articles in Playboy, Esquire and other mainstream publications soon)

    What a GREAT night for Bettye LaVette!!!!
    She truly rocked the house. It was PACKED. Lots of journalists and celebrities were in the house also. My thanks to everyone involved in putting together tonight's show. Thanks to Joe's Pub for providing the perfect venue to launch Bettye's new CD. We met lots of old friends and some new ones as well. The highlight of the evening was of course when Bettye sang Happy Birthday to Soul-Patrol's own Cheryl Russell.

    I just wanted to let yall know what a great time I had at this show.

    That's right; she came to Joe's Pub and…

    ::SHE CAME::
    :::::SHE SAW::::::
    ::::::SHE CONQURED::::

    Bettye LaVette made a grand entrance to the stage with her slinky and yet shapely body squeezed into a "f*ck me dress, shoes to match, ready to take on all comers…". In other words it's one of those kind of nights that 10 years from now, 100,000 people will say they were at, but we all know that would have been impossible…..lol. Bettye LaVette did everything but actually light the match that would have burned Joe's Pub down to the ground last night my friends.
