1. OCT/2003 SOUL-PATROL.NET RADIO RANKINGS

Soul-Patrol.Net RadioThe numbers for this relative ranking are taken from our server logs and represent "relative popularity" of the Top 40 shows on Soul-Patrol.Net Radio
A few observations...

- The SUPREMES are without a doubt the most popular artists on Soul-Patrol radio
- VICTOR WOOTEN"S Next CD had betta be SLAMMIN
- Soul-Patrollers seem to like INTERVIEWS/COMMENTARIES (we will put more up for u, I got some good ones)
- Soul-Patrollers must be a pretty horny bunch (yall really dig SLOW JAMS....lol)
- We need more JAZZ up on the site
- So called "NEO-SOUL" (I can't stand that label) music has a future
- Soul-Patrollers like it when we focus on a SINGLE ARTIST
- Soul-Patrollers want to hear new music from Classic artists
- "BLACK ROCK" would seem to have a future
- We need more DOO WOP music on the site
- Soul-Patrollers love Motown
- FUNK MUSIC still rules on Soul-Patrol (and always will)
- Soul-Patrollers like new releases, from both "old" artists and from "new artists"

All of these observations run counter to the "wisdom of the music industry".
The music industry seems to feel that the ONLY form of Black music that is acceptable nowadays is the type that DEGRADES BLACK WOMEN, FAMILIES AND TRADES IN OUR LEGACY FOR A FEW DOLLARS ('TOM-FOOL-ERY')
SO WUZ UP WITH THAT?

Could the "conventional wisdom" about Soul Music fans possibly be wrong?

Overall I would say that after 3 years, this "experiment" called SOUL-PATROL is beginning to show that it has some staying power?
(a' la Barry White :))

Stay tuned, we got some mo' GREAT stuff coming up...

In the meantime, take a look at the relative rankings for the month of October. If you haven't listened to some of these yet, please take the time to do so by clicking on the associated links.

If you like any of this music, I would STRONGLY urge you to purchase it, by going to the web sites of the artists and getting the music DIRECTLY FROM THEM. By doing so your dollars go DIRECTLY INTO THEIR POCKETS and STAY OUT OF THE POCKETS of any "middleman" or "culture bandits". This enables the artists to continue to create 'GREAT BLACK MUSIC FROM THE ANCIENT TO THE FUTURE'.
Some of their websites are directly linked on the right hand side of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter. You can also get their website addresses by listening to the broadcasts (we try to mention their websites whenever we can).
And of course most importantly, please share this music with your friends and family who you feel would also enjoy it by forwarding this information to them.

2. EDITORIAL: 'TOM-FOOL-ERY'

Soul-Patrol NewsletterHopefully you all will indulge me for a few moments and allow me to present this recent discussion from the Soul-Patrol Mailing List between myself and Mr. Stephan Broadus - Assistant to the Editor of The New Pittsburgh Courier (one of the most prominent Black Newspapers in the United States) as an editorial here on the Soul-Patrol Newsletter. I realize that some of you may not consider this to be a topic worth discussing here and if that is the case, please feel free to scroll right on past it.

> > BBC News
> > Blige attacks 'disrespectful' divas
> > http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3228755.stm
>
> >Once again, please take note of the fact that it is the
> >BRITISH BROADCASTING COMPANY (BBC),
> >that seems to be more interested in breaking news stories
> >about Black American culture.

>

Any thoughts on the reasons why that might be Stephan?

> Bob,
>
> I don't thing the majority media in the United States has the
> least bit of interest in breaking news stories about Black
> American culture. Furthermore, I don't think they have any
> real knowledge or understanding of Black American culture.

I agree!!!
And the evidence has been documented many times here on Soul-Patrol.
I wonder if that will ever change?
What is the solution?

> If we, black-owned media and web sites don't do a better job
> promoting Black American culture in this country, nobody
> else is going to.

I agree with this statement. In my opinion, the BBC isn't the problem. They seem to be doing a responsible job.

'TOM-FOOL-ERY' IS THE PROBLEM

However in order for this to become a reality, several things need to occur:

1. Encourage the growth of BLACK OWNED media publications, both on and offline.
2. Adopt a "Lee Atwater Style" attitude (SEEK & DESTROY) towards KNEE-GRO FRONTED OPERATIONS in radio, tv, print, online, etc.
In other words......"CALLING A SPADE A SPADE..."

Now I realize that at this point some of you might be asking...
(What does this have to do with music?)

Well it has plenty to do with music...

For the past several years now, I have been sitting here in this chair asking myself the question...

"Why can't we hear new music from artists like AWB, Chi-Lites, Earth, Wind and Fire, Victor Wooten, , Rio Soul, Will Wheaton, Bettye Lavette, Ray, Goodman and Brown, Sonny Boy, Michael Henderson, Mighty Sam McClain, Jazzhole, Tower of Power, Sandra St Victor, Dells,  Shelley Nichole, Mandrill, Billy Paul and others on the radio..."?

Is their music not good enough?
(no)
Is their music too "old fashioned"?
(no)
Is it because these artists refuse to play ball with the 'SYSTEM OF TOM-FOOL-ERY'
(yes)

So what is 'TOM-FOOL-ERY'?

It is the PREVAILING system where...

BLACK PEOPLE
LOOK
IN
THE
MIRROR
AND
FOOL
THEMSELVES
INTO
THINKING
THAT IT'S
OK
TO
BE
AN
UNCLE TOM
AND
SELL OUT
THEIR OWN
PEOPLE
CULTURE
AND
LEGACY
FOR
A COUPLE
OF
DOLLARS

> "Too long have others spoken for us," often to the discredit to
> any person of colour. "We wish to plead our own cause."
> John B. Russworm,
> Founder of the first black newspaper in the U.S.,
> Freedom's Journal, in New York in 1827.

The problem with this quote is that in 1827 we had BLACK MEN like John B Russworm, who were willing to...

PLEAD OUR OWN CAUSE"

Today we mostly have in it's place:
'THE SYSTEM OF TOM-FOOL-ERY'

Yes...
It is the existing system of...
'TOMFOOLERY'...
...that prevents artists such as AWB, Chi-Lites, Earth, Wind and Fire, Victor Wooten, , Rio Soul, Will Wheaton, Bettye Lavette, Ray, Goodman and Brown, Sonny Boy, Michael Henderson, Mighty Sam McClain, Jazzhole, Tower of Power, Sandra St Victor, Dells,  Shelley Nichole, Mandrill, Billy Paul and others from being heard on commercial radio.

Today we have a society where a man such as John B Russworm, would be REGARDED AS A FOOL, because he wouldn't for ONE SINGLE MOMENT become a participant in today's currently popular...
'SYSTEM OF TOM-FOOL-ERY'.

I am quite certain that he wouldn't want to be a contributing factor in...
SELLING HIS CULTURE and LEGACY DOWN THE RIVER FOR A FEW DOLLARS

As I stated recently, there are only about 10 topics that we should be discussing here on Soul-Patrol.
This is one of them.
My bad, cuz we haven't been discussing it enough here recently.
One of the earliest web pages on the Soul-Patrol website discusses this topic...

It's called...

BLACK MEDIA/HAS BET "SOLD OUT"

It was first put up on the Internet back in 1996 and it starts out something like this....
-----------------------------------------
I can remember a time when.....

* All of "our" radio stations were down at the "other" end of the dial...
* We were surprised when a TV commercial came on and there was a person who looked like
us.........
* When we all thought it was a big deal cause "Julia" was on.......
* There were almost no Black newscasters or sportscasters...
* All of "our" radio stations went off the air at sunset...
* Tarzan was the most "visible" resident of Africa...

Today things are very different ....aren't they ???
-----------------------------------------

The reality is that we have permitted the 'SYSTEM OF TOM-FOOL-ERY' to prevail and INFECT THE MINDS OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH SELF HATRED.

When I see, hear and read about some of the current "trends" in "black music/culture", I don't see an "emerging trend"...

WHAT I SEE IS SELF-HATRED

When I see, read and hear black folks (KNEE-GROES) defending the likes of R. Kelly, Kobe Bryant, Whitney Houston and attacking others such as Chief Moose and John Street, it makes me wonder what type of foolishness is going on.

Well...
I really shouldn't have to wonder. It's pretty simple to see just exactly what type of foolishness it is.
IT'S TOM-FOOL-ERY!!!

It's an easy trap to fall into.
Especially when the 'PHILOSOPHY OF TOM-FOOL-ERY' presents itself in 'blackface'.
It can be very persuasive.
It can be quite seductive.

IT REPRESENTS
THE ROOT OF OUR
ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION

We have been kind here lately on Soul-Patrol. We have been restricting our discussion of TOM-FOOL-ERY to the NATIONWIDE NETWORK OF KNEE-GRO RADIO STATIONS

Hell, I was listening to the one in Philadelphia (WDAS) yesterday and it...
MADE ME SICK TO MY STOMACH

Today I will most likely listen to the one in NYC (WRKS)
and it too
WILL MAKE ME SICK TO MY STOMACH

These are the very stations that SHOULD be playing the music of...
...
AWB, Chi-Lites, Earth, Wind and Fire, Victor Wooten, , Rio Soul, Will Wheaton, Bettye Lavette, Ray, Goodman and Brown, Sonny Boy, Michael Henderson, Mighty Sam McClain, Jazzhole, Tower of Power, Sandra St Victor, Dells,  Shelley Nichole, Mandrill, Billy Paul and others

WE KNOW IT
THEY KNOW IT

These are different times we are living in today.
They are more dangerous times.
They are times in which our freedom of speech is being threatened by these huge media corporations, who only care about ever increasing profits, often at the expense of our music and cultural legacy.

The worst part is, that most times these purveyors of TOM-FOOL-ERY will appear with a "blackface" and we can be fooled into thinking that they are concerned with the preservation and expansion of our music/culture.

The reality is that sometimes, these folks are in fact our worst enemies...

It's NOT just the WRKS's & WDAS's of the world that are at the core of this problem...

It's also the...
* Tom Joyner's & Doug Banks of the world
* Africana.com's and Black Planet's
* UPN's and BET's
* and other 'coon operations' that are out to maximize their profits, at the expense of our musical/cultural legacy...

And we need a game plan to fix this problem.

That game plan must be comprised of several elements
- An all out and full frontal attack on TOM-FOOL-ERY
- The creation of PERMANENT and POSITIVE Black music/cultural institutions
- The involvement of people across multiple demographic groups

Then we need individuals who are willing to execute on that game plan.

That is what it will take on order for the vision of people like John B. Russworm to become a reality.
Over the next few months you will begin to notice a change in Soul-Patrol.

Of course we will still continue to provide you with the very best information available on the face of the earth with regards to 'GREAT BLACK MUSIC FROM THE ANCIENT TO THE FUTURE'.
However we are also going to start doing a much better job of not only informing you as to who the purveyors of TOM-FOOL-ERY are, both on and off the internet. In concert with providing you with this information, we are also going to start doing a much better job of letting you know where to go to find INDEPENDENT VOICES of music/cultural commentary, perspectives and information (ie; Black Rock Coalition, SoulofAmerica.Com, Magnatar Records, Open Up Your Heart Foundation, Philash Entertainment, Drylongo, The New Pittsburgh Courier, theFunkstore.com, Future of Music Coilition, Disco Step By Step, and others) that is related to the mission of Soul-Patrol.
