  • SOUL-PATROL COVERS THE 2002 ROCK n' ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONIES:

    2002 R&R HOF:
WIZARD OF THE WOONIVERSE TO THE RESCUE

Each year that we have covered the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, has been quite different.

The first two times we went, we were quite fortunate to be there as the guests of one of the artists being inducted.
This gives you a varing degree of "access" to the various festivities that occur, and the bottom line at these types of functions, is all about access (usually the color of your badge).

This year, for the first time, we had no guaranteed "access" to anything beyond the press room, where you are assigned to a "pool" of reporters, with no "one on one access" to any of the artists.
So therefore covering the event would prove to be quite challenging....

As you may recall from some of our past reports from the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, the REAL oppurtunities to interview people occur during the afternoon rehersals which requires skillful navagation of the buracracy in order to be granted admission to (without being on "the list").

We blew the Isaac Hayes rehersal, which was held early in the morning, so we knew that our next best shot to get in was 2pm's Talking Heads rehersal.

At about 1pm AAdamsRib was on the house phone at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC where the event was held, trying to reach Isaac Hayes, Sam Moore and Steve Cropper for a possible afternoon interview in their rooms.
I was hanging out in the lobby, just trying to "see who I could see", and suddenly I noticed a familliar figure bouncing thru the lobby wearing an kind of "zebra outfit", with kind of a "turban" on his head.

I dashed accross the lobby to catch up with this figure and just as he was about to enter the elevator I yelled out....

"YO BERNIE, IT"S BOB DAVIS FROM SOUL-PATROL, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET ME INTO THE 2 PM TALKING HEADS REHERSAL....."?

the figure turned around and sure enough it turned out to be the WIZARD OF THE WOONIVERSE himself...
.......former P-Funk & Talking Heads keyboard wizard BERNIE WORRELL!!!!!!!!!

Now for those of you here who go waaaayyy back with Soul-Patrol, you may recall that Berrnie Worell was one of our VERY FIRST chat guest here online (Rickey Vincent was actually our first one) and has been a good friend to us ever since.

Of course said that he would try to get us in.
He told us that he would be playing with the Talking Heads that night and would be soon going down for the rehersal.

We got into the rehersal, greeted Bernie and his wife Judi who is also a longtime friend & supporter of Soul-Patrol (by this time my brother Mike had joined us) and were able to interview many of the principals including: David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth, Steve Scales (and even some of their children).
    (more on those interviews later)

And for those of you who may recall some of the threads we have had here in the past asking the question:
"Talking Heads: Funk band or not"?, I am pleased to to report that during the rehersal, the Talking Heads THREW DOWN with a SUPER FONKY four song set that literally "BURNED DOWN THE HOUSE"!!!!!!!!!!!
    (more on that later)

During the rehersal, Sam Moore's wife Joyce called back on the cell phone and invited us up to their room for what turned out to be a 1.5 hour interview.
    (more on that later).

So despite the agenda that I laid out yesterday, we didn't get to interview Isaac Hayes (althogh we may have something special coming up there), Alicia Keyes (like her "handlers" were EVER going to let ME get near her with a microphone....eh?......lol) or the Ramones (who I really wanted to talk with).

However, we did come away with some amazing stuff to report back to yall!!!

(more to come, it's late and I am whipped)

    2002 R&R HOF:
    Talking Heads 2002

One of the most memorable threads that we have ever had here on the Soul-Patrol Mailing list was the discussion we had we have had several times here about the Talking Heads and whether or not they could be considered to be a FUNK band.

When I saw them live in concert back in 1982 at a club in Houston Texas, I certainly walked away thinking that they were a FUNK band, but lots of folks here feel differently.

Yesterday during the rehearsals for the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductions I didn't see or hear anything that would cause me to change my mind!

What Mike, AAdamsRib and I saw in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria at 2pm yesterday was pretty much the same collection of musicians that I saw in 1982.

    David Byrne
    Chris Frantz
    Jerry Harrison
    Tina Weymouth
    Steve Scales
    And of course Bernie Worrell

They played a STANK AZZ 4 song set which included:

    Psycho Killer
    Burning Down The House
    Stop Making Sense
    Take Me To The River

During their ROOM RATTELING SET, I was beating on the table as if I was a drummer in a GoGo Band.

I glanced around the room and saw Mike snapping his fingers and bouncing up and down in his chair the whole time

I turned my head and saw AAdamsRib swaying back and forth.

I looked the other way and saw Felicia Collins dancing around the room

Everyone else in this SERIOUSLY DEVIOD OF FUNK CROWD of about 25 people were sitting there mostly in silence.

Each time the Talking Heads finished a song, I would start to applaud and I would look around and see that nobody else was applauding, but then within a few seconds folks would give polite applause.
    And I was like..
"...damn, what the hell is wrong with these people"?

    At any rate.

If you watch the Talking Heads Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Inductions on TV, be sure to keep an eye/ear out for the performance of percussionist extraordinaire.

    STEVE SCALES

Let's just put it this way..

    STEVE BROUGHT THE FUNK HOME!!!!!!!!!!

Of course Bernie brought it home too, that was expected..

But the with FIRECE INTENSITY that Steve was playing, If you had closed your eyes you would have thought that Mandrill or Santana was up there on stage!

Afterwards I talked with Steve about this (and other stuff) on tape for about 20 min.
(I'll put the inteview up on the site eventually)
    Brotha is BADDDDDDDD

One of the things I remarked to Steve was that "visually", the Talking Heads on stage brought to mind, Sly and the Family Stone.

    He said.

"Yeah, men and women, blacks & whites all up on stage playing funky music together, the world doesn't have enough of that going on."

    & I thought to myself...

What a damn shame that this reunion of the Talking Heads is just a one shot deal, cuz the world sure needs em now!

    2002 R&R HOF:
    David Byrne 2002

After the Talking Heads finished their STANK NASTY 4 song set, Steve Scales took me over and introduced me to David Byrne and we talked for a few moments.

    What is David Byrne like?
    You be the judge...

CEO OF SOUL-PATROL.COM: David, it's nice to meet you. I have been a big admirer of your music for many years, in fact, I'll bet that I was one of only 3 Black guys who actually purchaced a copy of "More Songs About Buildings and Food", when it was first released?

    DAVID BYRNE: LOL

CEO OF SOUL-PATROL.COM: David, I really have quite a bit that I would like to discuss with you, but since the time is short and I know that you have to get ready for your big night tonight, I want to spend this time talking about someone else's music besides your own for a few minutes, if that's ok?

    DAVID BYRNE: No problem

CEO OF SOUL-PATROL.COM: First off, I want to thank you personally for your involvement in in literally bringing BACK FROM THE DEAD, some of the best music that has ever been recorded....

DAVID BYRNE: Oh you must be a Shuggie Otis fan?

CEO OF SOUL-PATROL.COM: YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!!!!!

CEO OF SOUL-PATROL.COM: What can you tell me about how you came to the realization that "INSPIRATION INFORMATION" was something that people needed to hear again?
    br>
DAVID BYRNE: Would you belive that up untill about 3 years ago, I had never heard of the album?

    CEO OF SOUL-PATROL.COM: No sh*t?

DAVID BYRNE: Well it's true. I was introduced to it by a friend, who had burned a copy of the LP on to a CD and instructed me to listen to it. On the first listen, I knew that it was the work of someone who was a musical genius.
After that I started to research the history of the album and decided that it was a travesty that it wasn't available on CD. Soon after I decided to aquire the rights to it and re-issue "Inspiration Information" via my label Luka Bop Records.

(during this interview there was a loud buzz coming from a nearby speaker and so I knew that neither David Byrne's voice or my own would come thru well on the tape)

DAVID BYRNE: (grabs my pen and pad & starts writing) Here I want you to have my home phone number so that we can continue this interview anytime that is convienent for you....

    We shook hands
He walked away and I smiled...

    2002 R&R HOF:
    "I'M A SOUL MAN 2002" - Sam Moore

I mentioned earlier that AAdamsRib had set up an interview for us with the LEGENDARY Sam Moore in his room at the Waldorf for 4pm.

When Mike, AAdamsRib and I went up to Sam's room at 4pm, we were greeted warmly by Same Moore and his wife Joyce.

    Sam said...
"I'm so glad that yall are here"
"I'm so happy to finally meet yall"
"I got a whole bunch of stuff that I need to tell yall"

He hugged all three of us
Turns out that Sam Moore knows quite a bit about Soul-Patrol :)

As I stated earlier, we talked for about 1.5 hrs.
It is by far, the most informative interview that I have ever been involved in with anyone I have ever talked with in the music business!!!

I have the whole thing on tape!!!!!
Right now, I'm not sure how much of it I will be able to play via the internet.

Sam and his wife took us to school, with respect to many things that I had only suspected till we had our conversation.

Sam Moore KNOWS WHERE ALL OF THE SKELETONS ARE BURIED (and knows who all of the people are who SHOULD BE SKELETONS!)

He told us a TON of information about stuff that I only had the vaugest notions of before!

Here is one of the things that Sam Moore told us yeaterday afternoon...

"One of the things i want to tell yall about, is a meeting that took place in Miami Fla, I was involved in back in 1965...

In attendance at this meeting were...

    Malcolm X
    Cassius Clay
    Sam Cooke
    Otis Redding
    Sam Moore

It was right before the Liston/Clay fight

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a plan for the formation of a Black owned record label.

    Soon after this meeting...

    Sam Cooke was dead
    Then Malcom X was murdered
Within a few years Otis redding would be dead
Muhahmeed Ali would lose his heavyweight boxing title"

    Sam Moore said...
"I was the ONLY one left"

Sam then shows us a memo that comes from the desk of a major music industry executive
    The memo says...
"If you want to shut Sam Moore up, then just keep him filled up with drugs"

    Sam Moore described himself as...
"A junkie for almost 20 years"

Sam Moore gave us a Black History Lesson that i will NEVER forget, what I just told you was a "tidbit"
(THAT is just the "tip of the iceberg....)

    And oh, btw....
HE'S GOT DOCUMENTATION TO PROVE THE THINGS THAT HE HAS TO SAY
He showed us court documents, memos and more...

He and his wife showed us this documentation
They even gave us some of it
I told them that I would post some of it on the Soul-Patrol website

I'll let you all know what it is when I get it up on the site.
Sam Moore wants us to share it with you.
He wants yall to know the TRUTH

    "Got what I got
    The HARD way
    And I make it better
    Each and Every day
    I'm a SOUL MAN"
